Official VCX-100 stats vs fan made Starwars Rebel sourcebook ?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I was surprised to discover in the book related to the Guardians "Keeping the Peace" (FaD sourcebook) the stats of the VCX-100.

It is a size 5 ship with a handling of -3 !

The excellent fanmade sourcebook for Starwars Rebel I used untill now gave non official stats, size 4 and handling 0.

The difference is pretty huge.... what do you think ?

I think that's the "danger" of fan-made stuff. It tends to contain some elements of wishful thinking, where someone really likes a specific thing and subsequently assigns it better stats than it should actually have. The printed stats in KtP are the official, canon ones.

As someone who's watched every episode of Rebels several times, I think it's fairly safe to say that the Ghost's handling in the series is more down to Hera being an outstanding pilot than to any inherent manoeuvrability the ship has. She probably has the Rigger specialization, which can raise the Handling of a ship twice (or is it three times?), plus both Pilot and Hotshot. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some talents from the Modder spec involved as well. And some extensive modifications, of course.

Yes right, and after all, none of the ships size 4 were able to house a smaller craft like the shuttle of the VCX-100. Size 5 makes sense I think, handling -3 is a bit harsh, I would give it a -2 but I will go for the official stats anyway.

It's all in the eye of the beholder.

Sil 5 works because the ghost is kinda big, and that would allow the phantom to dock via an aftermarket docking bay. But as Krieger points out this requires Hera to have some XP to get funky with it.

Sil 4 works because it allows fancy flying with less XP, and the Ghost is only slightly larger than a citadel, with the phantom docking via external clamps. But doing this makes the VCX pretty sweet, requiring a price boost that would put the VCX out of reach of most players considering its already icky rarity.

As usual, it responds down to the players and gm....

Haynes guide to the Millenium Falcon shows a small shuttle/fighter that docks between the "mandibles" of a YT-1300 not unlike the Phantom's attachment to the Ghost.

You also have to factor in that the fan made one is base off the The Rebel's series where the ship has been modified to Hera's liking.

The one from the FaD book is just a normal ship that isn't modified at all.

Coming from a guy who takes ships that haven't been stated out yet and make some stats for fun I see where both of them are at. Doesn't make it much better when one stat is out before the other and having to compare the two isn't fun.

I think Sil5 makes more sense.  We never see Hera try to dogfight anyway, the Ghost is more of a turret platform than something to go toe-to-toe with other fighters.

that is true

you never know hera could have the talent or attachment for the ship to make it one shil smaller lol

The Ghost is more like a tank and less a race car. and its important to remember, as many have highlighted already, the Ghost is not a standard VCX-100, it highly modified, and util we have a full catalogue of books for this game (looking at you Engineers book) I doubt we have all the offical mods and Specialisations that are effecting it.

I've always hated old explanations that the "mandibles" are for freight loading. Those things never appeared to be able to move and grab stuff to me. I recall the Kenner toy that could be slipped between the mandibles and had also thought that was silly (I still have my original Kenner Falcon). Looking at it now I like the idea of a small runabout or freight loader that is docked between the "mandibles". It makes the layout make more sense. How come we never see these? Well the YT-1300 is an aging craft, the runabout isn't made anymore, and it was only an expensive option when the YT-1300 was purchased new. Many didn't have one and many have been lost and never replaced.

The main thing to notice about rebels is that Hera (and Kanan) are shown often that they are great pilots. That isn't to say they are "good" they are great. Hera showed with the B-Wing episode she can pilot pretty much anything. Additionally with Chopper messing with things, you have a recipe for having a slow poor handling ship, doing amazing stunts.

Also keep in mind most fan material is greatly different from the published materials. Before using ANY fan-made stuff, make sure your group is okay with it and has some sort of plan in place for what to do if that item ever gets published. From the USM to these "sourcebooks" you can get wild swings that can change decisions in the game be ready for that.

First Rosco74, thanks for the kind words regarding the book :)  Much appreciated.

As for any of the info or stats in Spark of Rebellion, it should all be treated as "Legends" with FFG books (and of course the show) being "Canon". We knew this going in, that there would be much info that would likely be 'overwritten' later on, but that's the nature of this kind of project. And of course, everything has to be thought up by someone at some point!

Personally, I'd stick with the official stats. But if you as GM and your players like the one in SoR, then of course you can use whatever you want!

Thanks for all your feedback. I will continue to use sil. 4 for my current group, would be too much trouble to switch to sil. 5 in the mid of a campaign anyway.

I know in the other hand there is so much modifications done on the Ghost, but nonetheless all modifications of the universe won't change a ship's silouhette, I think :-)

I didn't expect an official VCX-100 to be published anyway, I think the most important is to have fun. And again thanks for this excellent fanmade sourcebook ;)

IMO, the VCX-100 is right on the borderline of Sil 4/5, and so anyone could easily have gone either direction with it.

Not everything you see in the Movies and TV shows, etc… is going to fit nicely into the standard categories that FFG has created, and so someone somewhere is going to have to make a decision.

When RPG created the material for SoR, we decided to go one direction. But FFG decided to go the other way.

Personally, I don’t think that makes either us or them “right” or “wrong”, we just chose to go different directions. And if FFG had a different person do the ship specs, they might have also chosen to go the same direction we did. And if RPG had a different person do the ship specs, then we might have gone the same direction FFG did.

What’s done is done, and you should decide which set of specs you like best, and be happy that you made the right choice for you and your game.
