zhuhang 0 Posted July 10, 2016 Runner starts a run with Inside Job. Corp rez a Chum In this case, the subroutine on Chum is not considered broken?
CommissarFeesh 458 Posted July 11, 2016 Ass in all things, consult the timing chart. The subroutine on Chum is not broken, but neither does it resolve. Inside Job happens at step 3.0 of a run (when you encounter ICE). Unbroken subroutines resolve at step 3.2 of a run. Inside Job ends the encounter phase before you reach step 3.2, so Chum doesn't get a chance to resolve at all. A more pertinent situation: assume you have a Tollbooth on a server. The runner uses Femme Fatale to target Tollbooth, and now can bypass it for one credit, without paying the 3cr tax each time. Disaster! Now, the Corp installs a Chum in front of the Tollbooth. The runner runs again, and doesn't break Chum. Now, if they bypass Tollbooth, they do so without having broken its subroutine, and so will take damage after the bypass. zhuhang 0 Posted July 14, 2016 I do think 'bypass' should not trigger any subroutine on the ice. Otherwise it is completely useless. But these two pieces of text make me think the other way. FAQ says "All subroutines (including 0) on the ice bypassed are not broken" Rule of Play says "If the Runner encounters a piece of rezzed ice and does not or cannot break its subroutines, the unbroken subroutines trigger and resolve one by one. That sounds like, "subroutines on bypassed ice are not broken. unbroken subroutines trigger and resolve one by one"?
Grimwalker 647 Posted July 14, 2016 As in all things, consult the timing chart. Step 3 The Runner encounters a piece of ice ("when encountered" conditionals meet their trigger conditions) Step 3.1 Paid-ability Paid Abilities, Icebreakers can interact with encountered ice Step 3.2 Resolve all subroutines not broken on the encountered ice - Either the run ends: go to [step 6] - Or the Runner passes the ice and the run continues: - If there is another piece of ice protecting the server, go to [step 2] - If there is not another piece of ice protecting the server, go to [step 4]. Chum fires if you do not break all subroutines on the subsequent piece of ice. If you bypass this second piece of ice, then step 3.2 never takes place, and its subroutines do not fire, but neither were they broken. This fulfills Chum's triggering condition to deal damage to you.
CommissarFeesh 458 Posted July 14, 2016 You're ignoring a really important line from the FAQ. When an effect allows a runner to "bypass" a piece of ice, he or she immediately passes that ice and continues the run. Emphasis added. You skip the remaining part of the encounter, and go straight to "the runner passes the ice" on the chart. Subroutines do not resolve, but you also do not break them. If unbroken subroutines resolved, then you would still be affected by "end the run" subroutines, and would not, in fact, pass the ice OR continue the run.
