Plan for expansion specific campaigns?

Recommended Posts

FFG,

What is the plan for future campaigns in the Road To Legend App?

I just downloaded the RTL app and bought the Descent Core Set last weekend and it was a great time!   We are really looking forward to our next gaming session.

But I am not really seeing an incentive for buying the expansions right now for anything but getting some new heroes and classes.

To me, its not enough to just add a new side quest and a couple new monster groups to the RTL campaign.

I think that each expansion should have its own campaign in the RTL app.  Now I know that isn't going to happen immediately, but I want to know that this is planned for the future

I believe there is a side quest for each expansion that uses the tiles from that expansion set.

Also, the extra variety in heroes and monsters adds a lot the experience anyway, I think.

You have to remember that the boxed expansions are their own self-contained product.

They include their own complete campaign based on the traditional way to play Descent with an Overlord.

Road to Legend is also an expansion of sorts, that has its own self contained campaign and unlike previous expansions; allows you to optionally incorporate content from other expansions.

This in of itself is great!

But just because you choose to play solely with the app doesn't mean you should expect the boxed expansions to provide an extensive amount of content for it.

They are their own product that luckily can be incorporated somewhat into the app.

Not to say I wouldn't be happy to see RtL complete campaigns based on each expansion; but I do think its a high and unreasonable expectation.

Hero/Monster packs are a good alternative to adding content to RtL as they are cheaper and don't contain much campaign related content of their own.

Totally this - I think the hero and monster packs are perfect for Road to Legend.

Hopefully FFG will be releasing more campaigns for RtL and adding a few more features to it. I'd happily pay a small amount for some new content and I think RtL is really cool and one of my favourite gaming experiences at the moment.

I would really love to see this as well.  However; my impression was that the App contained all of the content of the original games and expansions.  I of course am wrong but if FFG did incorporate this into the app then the value of purchasing the expansions goes way up IMHO.  This eliminates the decision of who has to play the Overlord and Overlord fatigue.  Who doesn't want to be the heroes and gain fame, fortune and glory?

Much of the traditional descent quests just wouldn't work in the app, unless they make the AI a thousand times more intelligent for starters.

So I don't think a 1:1 conversion of any of the box campaigns will ever happen.

I do agree that some expansions could add more than just one sidequest.

A mini campaign for each Big Box expansion would make more sense for example. (Rise of All Goblins could be considered the one for the Base box then 2 more mini campaigns for LoR and SoN)

I think we can safely say that there will be another RtL campaign that only requires the base game and it will be most likely released during the next 6-10 months.

From this point on, it's quite uncertain what will happen, although if the PoD coops are any indication on what to expect, expansion specific RtL campaigns aren't completely out of the question (contrary to typical FFG expansion policies).

Normally FFG is always only releasing expansions that only require the base game, because the market for expansions that require expansions is much smaller than the market for expansions that just require the base game. However there are exceptions to this and these exceptions typically come with low priced expansions that don't need to be mass-produced to generate profit. Examples of these expansions are the mentioned PoD coops as well as the lieutenant packs (kind of) and the figure packs for Imperial Assault (also not totally exclusive to expansions, but ~70% of their content is exclusive to expansion-owners).

The RtL campaigns would also fall into this category, as they only need to be developed, no mass-producing required to get the price down to a level where the product will be good value and profitable.

But the RtL app has even more possibilities to counteract the problem of a potentially unprofitable size of the market. The app stores what expansion you do own and if FFG wants, they can easily collect the data of how many people who play the app have expansion X or Y and release a campaign for the expansions most people own. Since FFG expirienced that app releases can even trigger people to purchase physical expansions, I think FFG is very likely to release expansion exclusive RtL campaigns at some point in the future, after they catered to the base game only crowd (and two campaigns seem to be some kind of standard so far, as there are 2 campaign-books and 2 PoD coops for the base game so far).

Also I can't agree with the H&M packs being best value for the RtL app. Imo the one thing that makes the campaigns replayable and that keeps the game fresh are the variety in hero classes and those only come with boxed expansions, which, in the case of big box expansions, come even with more monsters and as much heroes as the H&M packs.

I bought Descent only because they released the app so I can play solo or full coop. Sad thing is that I'm actually loosing the fun not being able to play original campaign in the app. I would definitely buy all possible expansions (currently bought first expansion and two monsters groups) if they brought something more than just a side quests (and it's only 1 per expansion :( ). Is anyone aware if secret rooms are implemented in the app?

I'd be happy to purchase additional campaigns at a reasonable cost.   I don't expect anyone to work for free pumping scenarios out, unless of course, the fan base somehow gets access to RtL's internals similar to the Vault.

I wonder if they ever consider the app successful enough to release app specific physical releases. For example a box expansion like the Sea of Blood campaign. The box contains all the physical stuff that would be needed to play it (Ship, Seas map, Island map, Naval specific monsters and heroes) and the rest is handled by the app.

I would buy it immediately..

Some people are saying we should not expect FFG to convert the boxed expansion campaigns to be playable with the RtL app, however, the app does exactly what RedJak's Automated Overlord does already and could easily be converted to act as the Overlord in the boxed expansion campaigns. The only reason why I picked the game back up was to play co-op with my girlfriend. She likes it, however, we were disappointed once we found out we cannot have the app play as the Overlord for the other boxed expansion campaigns. Once we're done with the Kindred Fire campaign I'm afraid we will have to put it away until another full campaign comes out on RtL. (I will check out Delve, but we like longer story driven campaigns.)  I have a couple of the boxed expansions, but I don't see any reason to purchase anymore expansions if I can't play them co-op with my girlfriend using the RtL app. I would probably buy every boxed expansion there is if the RtL app acted as an Automated Overlord. Until then I don't need to buy the boxed expansions because we don't play the Overlord feature and having to manage both the Overlord and the Heros in RedJak's Automated Overlord becomes tedious. Thanks for your time!
