Running a campaign as a Space Marine Tactical Squad.

Hi Guys, so first off. Shameless plug.

I am the chapter master of a nascent online Space Marine chapter - The Crimson Griffons, we play almost every video game that you can play as or command space marines. We absolutely want and probably need more people. PM me if you want in, we are all casual all the time. I'm too old for hardcore.

 

Now that's out of the way I'm going to be using deathwatch as a game system on our forum for a kind of weekly turn based scenario focused on an errant tactical squad (later maybe scout squads, Sternguard, killteams etc etc).

 

Definitely looking for people interested in this (see the first paragraph) but also, some general advise.

 

Does anyone have a good template or stat buy system for DW?

 

Does anyone foresee any bumps in the road with playing a chapter rather than deathwatch that I may have missed? I mean I get it's a little limited everyone playing tactical except for maybe 1 devastator but I can see this evolving between missions.

 

I'll probably be using Campaign Cartographer 3 with Campaign Cosmologer for the mapping.

If you're familiar with Dark Heresy 2nd edition, converting much of Deathwatch is very doable.

 

Two big changes in game:

 

(a) They won't automatically have FL(Xenos) or automatically crit against Xenos.

 

(b) Equipment available through requisition should be a lot more limited. For example, specialist ammunition is normally just for special characters or Sternguard. Lots of other specialist gear should be highly restricted or flat out unavailable, unless your game is very high level.

That might be considered, the chapter has strong ties to the Inquisition, so having a higher than average serving rate in the sector would make sense.

 

They won't have special ammo at all to start, but that's fine - they are against secessionists for the first campaign.

 

Good catch on the xenos stuff, I would have missed that.

 

In addition, I am 99% sure if this takes off said squad will be seconded to a Hereticus Inquisitor.

 

Same battlezone, secessionists.............

Some interesting points, The first among equals commentary is intriguing. Since I consider all captains equal and independent (and refer to the 1st Captain as first among equals) I might propose a setup similar in Squads, where squads are put together ad hoc, with each member contributing something.

 

In actuality, this is how I run games of ARMA3. Where I take the SL, because I can manage the AI's but my friends take sniper, repairman etc. We are all equal, all have a role, i often defer to my squad sniper, and just keep the AI's in check.

I'm debating turning off "squad mode" for fhe first couple of missions, to represent them being new to power armour space marines (they are reserves being formed into a squad in the 2nd company).

 

If the players are new to Deathwatch, that's not a bad idea. Using squad mode abilities effectively does have a learning curve.
