What do you do for a living?

Programmer Analyst (IT), and a reformed pastor.  My job is to maintain government applications during the week, but my privilege is to minister the gospel of Jesus Christ to sinners everywhere.

 

I'm not surprised to see so many IT people here.  I expect there are a lot of musicians too (I play guitar).

I'm an architect...or will be once I finish my licensing exams.  Three of seven done thus far, should finish by the end of the year.  I used to work in BioTech doing clinical documentation and that was exactly as fun as it sounds, so I went back and got an Architecture degree.  At least the grind now is in a creative field and not technical writing purgatory.

I am also an Architect; worked for a firm for 12 years until I realized that only 20% of my billing rate made it to the dope doing the work (me), so I bolted. I have had my own shingle since 2004; love setting my own schedule, but the boss can be an a#$ sometimes haha! X-Wing is a great game of miniatures, details, entertainment, and fantastic use of spacial relation skills....oh, and a great excuse to have a great pint in hand.

I don't "minister" the gospel, but, being untrained in the seminarian way, I simply throw seeds of great news all over the place; I have been told by friends that they can be tough to get out of one's hair though, haha!

yeah until this week i was the guitar player and 2nd vocalist in a band called 'renoized', got an album out, played some very cool gigs supporting bands like KMFDM etc but the singer (who also sort of owns the band) has gone to work in Germany so we're sort of broke up.

 

The drummer and I are starting something new but this is what we do:

 

this was one of our singles from 2014 but its a composite video from various gigs so the astute will notice our roadie becomes out drummer at one point (the original long haired drummer left)

its *very* spinal tap but you can see what a typical gig for us is like.  Sounds not great at point as it was being filmed very close to the PA.

I am still a bit hacked off this bands over as it was incredibly good fun to be in.

Yeah, I'm only three years in, but from my previous career I already knew the billing rate scenario (with consultants and what not).  I assume I'll get the 10-year itch as well, but right now I'm still absorbing all the minutiae of the industry.  It is by and far nothing they taught me in school.  The core gaming group I have is Architect, Architect, Architect, Architect, Toxicologist, Chef, Structural Engineer, and another Architect (that's me).

 

Needless to say, we get a lot of "ughs" from the Toxicologist, Chef, and Structural Engineer.

Well tryped, I understand completely your position; design school does not teach you to perform the job of an architect, just to design like one. Sounds like a fun group to game with, save the architects.....no, really. :-)

Well...i was also a semi driver for a few years...but it turns out that I'm not very good at it...

So I have joined the ranks of the technologically inclined . Now I work with fiber optics and other assorted telecommunications bric-a-brac.

I'm a professionally trained percussionist, recreational guitarist, and I've recently started DJing.

Before doing computer stuff, I was a music major in college, so a lot of that stuck with me. But ultimately it went from a passion to a chore, so I switched. Now I'm back to doing it for fun and I'm way happier

In college I was totally into a crazy-rock-hillbilly-gospel-bluegrass band. My friends and I would see them a couple time a year, but then they broke up. It was awesome, because the crowd was a mix of old folks, hippies, cowboy boots, and punks.

Right before the French Revolution, it was the goal of the middle class to create enough of a steady income through investment that you and your kids didn't have to work at all.  I really wish my folks had bought into this concept.  

 

Man, if I had the spare time to do dedicate to doing whatever I wanted?  Oh, the local hobby scene would be awesome.

Here's a pic to show how totally 'random' my day job can be.  I was doing a feature on Soviet armoured vehicle crew for my magazine which meant a day on an MTLB from the 80s!

 

 

And for contrast, on the other side of the iron curtain 'capturing' a load of Soviets with my rifle section when covering/reviewing and airsoft 'cold war' event.

 

 

Those are the 'fun' sort of bits of it.  The vast majority of my time is spent researching or writing things up.
