Gunboat nevermore

Recommended Posts

I wanted to post this random fact.

The last time X-wing had a release wave with no EU ships was wave 2.

The last time X-wing had a release wave with no EU content was never, (Cards referencing Maarek Stele for example). Even the Core Set had Mauler Mithel, backstabber etc.

Mauler Mithel, Dark Curse and Night Beast. Named by the Decipher CCG but pilots during the Escape from Bespin and the Battle of Yavin.

I actually was trying to get a 3d printed decimator before the official announcement for it. Also  I want the Gunboat exactly as much as the DX-9, escort shuttle, R-41 and a bunch of other ships. T-wing too. And Dunelizard. And Kimo. Feel free to hate on all of these if it makes you feel better.

Once there's a 150 page thread about them, waves worth of whining about their lack of release and people wearing passive agressive t-shirts to events asking for them, I will.

Until then, I too would love to see any ship. Even prequal ones. The difference is I appreciate what I have, not whine about what I didn't get.

Yup dats when it jumped the shark for me too... saying that wonderful Wave Nine is MEH in favor of some old-ass ship from the 90's that you have formed a cult around... well, that opened my eye-peeps up but good to the place where some of our fellows go to... and it was not where I want to go.

Bye Guy!

... if you come backs to reality... I'll still be here and we can be buddies agains!

Deciding that wave nine is wonderful is a matter of perspective. Honestly, there's no ship there I'm likely to buy for any other reason than for the cards that will come with them...

Joe is the kind of guy who loves every release regardless. The gunboat thread has been going for two odd years and won't be stopping anytime soon while ostensibly it belongs in the off topic forum until it actually gets released. Within the past 6 months or so for whatever reason theres been a big upturn in the amount of posts referring to the gunboat, possibly they are still butt blasted the punisher was released.

Wave Nine is MEH in favor of some old-ass ship from the 90's that you have formed a cult around

There's a huge difference between a ship with the weight and developmental planing of decades behind it and a bunch of upstart ships with little role definition and minimal aesthetic competency (ARC-170 excepted, the prequel design teams knew what they were doing, cartoons and nucanon not so much it seems).

I can see 20 years of dust adding quite a bit of that weight you speak of.

I think that's adding a little bit too much credit. The gunboat is 20 years old, not 20 years of development. For all you know, people spent more time thinking about the Shadow Caster than they did about the gunboat. Just because it's been around longer, does not mean it is better.

So by that definition, you are a FFG cultist, Joe.

Okay, I'll give you that, maybe the Star Trek design team did put a lot of thought into the Shadow Caster.

I can understand the Gunboat guys tbh. They like the ship, managed to draw a lot of attention to it (the Gunboat thread is by far the longest I know of on FFG forums) and FFG gave them TIE Punisher, a ship of minor gameplay impact and almost 0 fluff relevance. Now, if Wave 9 is an 8nd8cation of FFG future direction (pulling every possible ship from new Canon), that's bad news for anyone rooting for a given EU ship (not only Gunboat).

Ooh, of course, it looks like a Star Trek ship. The gunboat, however, is one of the finest pieces of design there is. Nothing like a brick with wings.

Regardless, to say the gunboat has had lots of design time and effort put into it is speculation at best.

Well I sure am able to love that they make such great models. I do love my toys much more than many miserable people you encounter online in these types of forums. I am not like that at all. Furthermore for me to qualify as an actual FFG Cultist I am not going to get that job.

Why? Because: I do semi-hate some of their rules and the way they have interpreted some of the ships. I do write that stuff off and make my own fun little cards and other game paper and do not use the FFG stuff that my paper has replaced.

A Cultist would follow the doctrine without fail. I also utterly despise the meta-think and competitive tournament play. I have failed as a true FFG Fanboy... much less a cultist.

;)

Once before I had a query, "Y U NO GUNBOATS FFG?!?" they screamed a-teary,

So much lore, the games, squandered, rewritten, ignored,

Just U-boats, Acewing, Turrets, so bored...

Then nodding, napping, came a-buzzing, sounded funny

Was a website article, "Gunboats to arrive soon, Wave 20!" Hurry up and take my money!

Gunboats-gunboats galore,

Quotes the internet, forevermore

I just want moar ships.

The FO and SF were lazy design choices by lucasfilm though, even if they play well on the board...

I would disagree. Maybe lazy, but certainly with good reason. People want Star Wars. That means X-Wings and Tie Fighters. Now X-Wings are inherently awesome (and I still prefer the battered look of the T-65s) and ties are... well... a little dull. Especially with the fact that most deviations look like all the other ties. But that fits with the idea of the Empire - all uniform and no personality allowed - all big cogs in a machine. If you read the Imperial Handbook, it makes a point that no-one is unique or special. I read somewhere that a Tie Pilot is never assigned to the same ship so they can't get any attachment to it.

The Rebels and scum on the other hand lend themselves to different ships, cobbling together what they can manage and encouraging pilots to personalise their craft.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I completely understand the desire for some variation from the imperials - all the ships worth flying are generally ties. But I also understand why the movies went with Tie Fighters.
