Hi, I'm Miikka Sohlman, aka Hipsu in here and elsewhere. I've been painting miniatures, on and off, for 6 years now. Mostly off. I had a considerable pause before IA rekindled that fire again.

Here's what I've painted this far, roughly in this order. As you can see my order follows pretty much Sorastro's. I don't use the same paints or techniques as he, but I'm always curious to see what crazy schemes he comes up with before I paint mine, which is why I haven't overtaken him yet. You'll see some of his ideas sto.. borrowed here.

Most of these paint jobs have an unpleasant sheen on them. I use satin varnish because in my experience matte often dulls them too much. But goshdarnit if they don't reflect the spotlight I point at them for photo shooting. IRL they are not this shiny, trust me! They are actually very pleasant to look at.

You'll find even bigger resolutions if you click the pictures. For those who enjoy dust particle spotting.

Wow nice set up, I won't post mine now :P  haha

Just curious, do you paint the bridge of their nose on the helmet for the Storm Troopers, or is that all from the nuln oil?  I decided to try a really light coat there with this next batch of stormies because my first batch didn't seem to get any details there from the wash..but I am wondering if I messed up by covering up the detail now.. and if I should paint back over it with white before doing the wash.

Edit: Technically it would be below the nose I guess, like the mustache region.. not the line below the eyes.

Edit 2: Your detail on the eyes is amazing btw.

I guess I have to disclose at this time that I was doing some experimental stuff back then with those STs. I was trying out oil washes, so what you see in the crevices is thinned oil paint, not Nuln Oil. I don't think nuln oil even touched those figures. Btw I don't necessarily recommend oils, I was just experimenting. But if I were using nuln oil, yes it would be all wash, just like Sorastro does it. The only parts I painted black on the helmets were the eyes and the unibrow.

I could imagine 2 reasons why it didn't work out for you. Either you've clogged the details with too much white primer/paint, so the nuln oil has nothing to crawl into. Or, your nuln oil is not as dark as Sorastro's nuln oil. I've heard people are having different results with the product. Perhaps a brand new pot doesn't darken as much as older stuff where some of the medium has evaporated and the wash is more concentrated and thus darker...

Big like!

What Colors did you use for the right Trandoshan's skin?

Thanks for liking. :) I have absolutely no recollection about those Trandos. I remember mixing different paints together and trying out this wash and that drybrush color and going back and forth and back and forth. My painting is always a big experiment with no documenting of the process. :P Sorry...

Amazing work all around. I appreciate the base work that you have done. It really makes each and every figure unique. I am partial to the dynamic duo. C3PO has always been my favorite. I liked them so much I bought 3 sets and painted up some custom but canon droids.
