Opinion: Worst Character to Be?

Recommended Posts

Personal vote: the Ghoul.

Just

Terrible

Not only does he suck to play, I think his card art and figure are just the worst. The artist obviously hit the LSD hard and was watching old snl episodes and the cone heads skit must have come up. How do you take what should be a cool looking character and come up with that art?? I in fact found it so terrible I found a better figure to play with, although I'm stuck with the terrible art on the character card.

hehehe funny..

I don't think there is a worst character, there is a list of characters that are all pretty awful but not a overall crappy character. I would say the Magus was a real contender but I have changed my mind on the "old lazy one". I suppose the Priest would be close to the crappiest if I was inclined to answer the question.. Oh god not the Elf or Ghoul... Even though they themselves are not fantastic.

Funny indeed, my stats say the Elf is the best base game character, alongside the Troll and Monk, all with 8 wins, 15 losses in 23 appearances. At other end of the spectrum, the stinky end, Ghoul (2-21) has been doing pretty bad, but he has been outclassed in suckiness by the Priest (1-22).

In Talisman the worst character to be is the one that is not drawing good cards!  :-)

Seriously though, the priest as-is when all the expansions are in play is one of the worst.  The Magus is high on the suck list but for me the worst character is the Sprite.  I have seen it used 4 times and each time she has been taken out very early because of her St1 and Fate 1.  If She draws bad spells and keeps drawing creatures....she is a quick hose job.

I personally can't stand the Highlander or any character that requires I lose a turn in order to use their abilities.

Yeh true the Highlander is another stinker.

lot of contenders necromancer is likely my top pick, highlander if we also factor in playability. But warrior, any knight strong contenders as well.

Priest i dont think is THAT horrible tbh. 5 fate goes a long way to tipping odds in your favor even if his abilities are pretty much ****.

Necromancer, wow, really? Along with the Ogre Chieftain, he is one of the two characters who can win really, really fast, even with pretty much starting stats, even better than the OC, he doesn't have to fight and win against Spirits. Grab Spirits, hit dungeon, cash all Spirits against LoD, win by 8+, doable in 25 minutes or under. Granted, works mostly with the vanilla CoC ending, with luck, might draw the right ending when using random ones, but even against fight endings (Ice Queen, Eagle King, etc.), keep hold of those Spirits and utterly dominate the boss.

Necromancer and OC really make the Ghoul and Minstrel poor in comparison. Former pair can have and use any number of their special Followers, while the latter pair can only use one per fight.

In my opinion the worst character to have and/or use in a game is Spider queen. As a character she's quite good but nothing can take away the gaming mood like her and she's banned in our games now.

As far as abilities goes I think we've house ruled most of the characters mentioned above already. But... as always, if often comes down to which expansions are in play to see which character to use.

What do you mean she takes away the mood? why is she banned?

Provided you only run into craft 3 or less SPIRITS, yeah.  Craft 4?  Coin flip if you win.  Craft 5 or greater and you are on the short end of the stick.

And not every enemy that engages in psychic combat is a spirit, so you're not necessarily able to grab all of them.

Oh, yeah, and then there are all of the strength enemies that you have to face in there, too.

As with every character, the right combination of luck could make the Necromancer win easily, but the odds certainly are not in his favor.  Whenever I see him he goes right into my "nope" pile.  I can't think of a single character that would compel me to choose the Necromancer in its place.

As joker said. Her whole point is to screw with everybody else. If played correctly she'll end up blocking all corner regions and good cards for the other players as well as forcing them to encounter bad strangers and places.

As I said, I know she's good, but she doesn't fit in our games at all.

So I decided to give the Necromancer a try, seeing as you were going all fan boy over him.  This was in the Digital Edition, playing with Dungeon, City, Highlands, Reaper, Frost March, and Sacred Pool expansions.

I was killed in the 12th round.

I only came across one spirit that I could enthrall.  I ran into a bunch of strength-based enemies that I couldn't do anything about.

I'm not sure how you can win in 25 minutes apart from being the luckiest person in the world.

So I stick by my initial review: useless.

What coin flip? You're never lifting a finger to fight Spirits as Necro. You choose not to fight them, period. Oh, drew that Demon (Craft 10)? Pass. Unlike the Minstrel, he doesn't have to roll anything, Craft higher, poof, it's a Follower. Get anything that boosts Craft outside combat and you can hit the Dungeon looking for Spirits. Plus, being your typical evil Craft character, he can attack others in psychic combat, giving him an edge over good and neutral 2/4 characters.

25 minutes has been done once or twice, getting there (Dungeon -> CoC) in under 45 min probably half a dozen times, not that much since random endings entered the fray. But then, Talisman games on average run about 75 minutes, so for people for whom Talisman takes 3+ hours, maybe that route is doable in 1 hour  ;)  .

Oh, yeah, and then there are all of the strength enemies that you have to face in there, too.

In addition to spirits you can run into elementals, cultists, constructs, dragons, and others.  They fight with craft, too, but you can't enthrall them or choose not to attack them.

Encounter a craft 10 demon in the Tomb?  He's not a spirit, even though he would be a spirit if you drew him from the Adventure Deck.  You have to fight him.

Winning with the Necromancer requires being fortunate to draw the right cards, roll the right rolls, and avoid the wrong random endings.  Every character requires some level of luck, but it requires far too much more with the Necromancer than it does with anyone else.

Please, you can replace Necromancer in the above quote with pretty much any character and it would be true.

Here's my list of 2/4 characters I'd rather draw than the Necromancer: Gypsy, Sage (Merchant has a better win-loss than the Necro, but still not a fan of him)

2/4 (or low Strength anyways) characters I'd want to draw Necromancer instead of (since we play single random): Cat Burglar, Druid, Elementalist, Ghoul, Grave Robber (though he is hella fun to play), Jin Blooded, Leprechaun, Minstrel, Philosopher, Priest, Prophetess, Spy, Sorceress, Sprite.

I'll actually agree necromancer is somewhat decent IF you play with dungeon and ending is known to not be a boss.

ending usually isnt though....

i guess then my vote is any of the 3 knights, highlander, warrior and philosopher
