(Space) Brothers without banners: a fringe Dash & Corran

Recommended Posts

Having recently been reminded of Taste the Rainbow's "alternate" Corran loadout (i.e., AS instead of FCS), I wanted to tweak that a bit, and maybe give my YT-2400 some of the table time it hasn't seen in the past year or so.

Feedback much appreciated!

Corran Horn: 50

E-wing (35)

Engine upgrade (4)

Push the Limit (3)

Advanced Sensors (3)

Plasma Torpedoes (3)

BB-8 (2)

Dash Rendar: 50

YT-2400 (36)

Outrider (5)

Lone Wolf (2)

"Mangler" Cannon (4)

Lando Calrissian -OR- C-3PO (3)

Total: 100

I like to fly Dash without a doughnut hole, and wonder how viable Corran is without his regen shenanigans. I like the idea of Corran being a crazy repositioner with both barrel roll and boost as options as well as 1 token (i.e., Focus, Evade, or TL) each turn he makes a green manouevre.

I'm considering swapping BB-8 for the generic R2 Astromech to give Corran a slightly nicer dial so he can K-turn with impunity and shed stress in the endgame to maximise his double-tap, or sprint out of danger on turns he either has no shot worth taking (because of range or likelihood of overwhelming return fire) or has to wait for his cannons to cool down because he's double-tapped. If I do swap astromechs, I might also swap EU for Hull; this would leave me with 2 points (+1 from R2, +1 from Hull), and I'm not sure where to spend those - Gunner on Dash? Or, do I just go with R2-D2?

For Dash, I've seldom flown him because I immediately preferred Eaden's stress mechanic when the Outrider was released. So, I can fly the YT-2400 quite handily, but am not accustomed to Dash's pilot ability. Is there more synergy to be gotten out of it in a build like this? The main idea I have is that Dash and Corran can each lead opponents on a merry chase while the other circles around to intercept the other's pursuers. I'm concerned about keeping him alive, though.

I think Corran's got some good insurance against U-boats with his Plasma Torps, and Dash should be able to survive an exchange and be able to reposition better than most other heavy hitters. One thing I've also seen as I perused old Dash+Corran threads was the sneaky idea of having Corran be high enough in points to win on time in a tournament setting, which I think he's got here; moreover, if I can keep Dash at half-health through time, my opponent would only get 25 points off him.

Which reminds me - I'm making this build with league play or Store Championships in mind, not Regionals; I'd like it to be viable, but I'm knowingly erring on the side of fun.

I've flown Corran without R2-D2 a few times. It's okay, but on the table the ship it most closely resembles is Vader. Sure you're tough. Sure you're maneuverable. But if they bulldog after you, even with a plinky TLT or some ties you will eventually die. If any of the big meta guns like fcs VCX's or torp boats come after you then you can easily die in a corner without having contributed much damage to the match. AS Corran can already BR before he executes a maneuver. BB-8 is only giving him another second action, so there's some anti-synergy there. I think 2 points for regen is worth losing that.

I ran a generic r2 on an Etahn swarm for a few games. If you are going for a non-regen e-wing with sensors then ptl/sensors/r2/engine is probably where I'd go with it. Doing a bank boost, barrel roll, green hard 2 turn after turn is completely bonkers maneuverability and tons of fun. It's better than having the BR be a free action, and it's more flexible, and it's cheaper.

Other stuff: I don't love ordnance Corran unless he has fcs. But fcs cuts your maneuverability way too much for this torp/VCX meta. I would sink those 3 points into the other ship or R2-D2.

Lone wolf dash pairs great with recon specialist as well. I very nearly won a store champ with that setup and Corran.

If I was running Dash/Corran in this meta it would be:

Wave 8 Dash/Corran (99)

Corran Horn (49) - E-Wing

Push The Limit (3), R2-D2 (4), Advanced Sensors (3), Engine Upgrade (4)

Dash Rendar (50) - YT-2400

Lone Wolf (2), "Mangler" Cannon (4), Recon Specialist (3), Outrider (5)

Nice reference in list title. Are you a true believer in The Grand Northern Conspiracy?

That "like" was intended as a "Yes [but I'm proctoring final exams and don't want my typing to distract my students]."

Thanks for pointing out the BB-8 un-synergy; I should've seen that. R2-D2 sounds like the best astromech option for Corran, but I like the idea of the generic R2 unit on Etahn with a swarm...

Thanks much!

I ran into something like that a week or two ago on Vassal. This is what it looked like:

E-Wing: · Etahn A'baht (32)

Z-95 Headhunter: · Lieutenant Blount (17)

Ion Pulse Missiles (3)

Z-95 Headhunter: Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

Z-95 Headhunter: Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

Z-95 Headhunter: Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

Z-95 Headhunter: Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

It was amazing the damage output it had. Those crits just destroyed my lineup (granted scum aren't fond of shields, so that hurt). If it can keep all guns on, it's brutal.

I like the plan with Corran,  but I don't think you need BB-8 (especialy if you're also running advanced sensors).

If I was going to run a non-regen Corran in a similar vein to that,  I would drop BB-8 & the engine upgrade,  and replace it with R7-T1.

That carries very similar functionality to EI+BB-8, and comes in 3 points cheaper...  You have the boost (albeit slightly conditional),  and because you have advanced sensors anyway,  you can still take actions before you move even without BB-8.

It also frees up your modification slot so you could quite easily slap a stealth device or a hull upgrade on there with the points you just saved (or you could upgrade Dash a little,  either works).

Lone Wolf (2), "Mangler" Cannon (4), Recon Specialist (3), Outrider (5)

I went with this at league night last week, and only got one game in, and got spanked. I flew Dash terribly (and repeatedly got Corran too close for Lone Wolf to be able to trigger), and didn't focus-fire on my opponents, instead trying to lower the Ghost's shields with Corran while using Dash to plink away at Poe. After I had flown Corran through the lion's teeth twice, on the third time I declined to go to the far side of the table to ensure I could get around an asteroid, and landed on it. Dodged fire from 2/3 enemy ships, then got Direct Hit from the Ghost (every time I fly Corran, he dies from a Direct Hit, either from a crit from enemy fire or from Proton Bombs). To continue to ASoIaF theme, this Corran is a Braavosi water-dancer, and I'm wielding him like a claymore.

I need to practice flying this Corran and Dash more if I'm to be any good with them.

But it felt fun to fly those vessels again!

Thanks for the C&C; I'm going to try writing batreps regularly as a way to reflect on my games so I can improve, and will spotlight this list in the other subforum.
