1st Edition Sea of Blood - should I buy?

Recommended Posts

Hi All:)

I have been a lurker on these forums for ages, but I need to ask an opinion of you.

I was picking up the Heirs of Blood campaign book today, and I noticed that they had the 1st Ed Sea of Blood expansion on the discount shelf.  It's sealed, never been opened.  They are asking $55 for it, which I thought was a very fair deal.

I have the main boxed set and Altar of Despair, and I thought that this would be a good add to my 1st ed stash.

Reckon I should get it?

A word of caution.

Sea of Blood is the expansion that killed first edition.

If you can find a copy of this expansion for 5 bucks, then I would suggest you pick it up.  There are a "few" things that are nice to have, but that all depends on you owning the original Road to Legend campaign expansion for first edition.

If the copy of SoB is sealed, and from the first print run, it should include a bonus hero - Nara the Fang.(look for a sticker on the front packaging)  Not a super stellar hero but an additional one is always nice.

if you own Road to legend then you can add all the dungeon levels to the deck for more variety and challenges.

You will also gain access to some new skills...while some are only relevant for the water, there are some neat ones.

You get an extra set of gold and silver power dice which is always great to have.

Now the bad....

The outdoor encounters were not well thought out, and in some cases unplayable.

The ship to ship combat is far too complex and has MANY issues.

Water is also a daunting challenge.

There is also an issue with not enough tokens/markers for all the encounters/dungeons.  What I mean by this is that some levels require a whirlpool and a dungeon entrance tile. (looks like a skull) The tile itself is great - its a 3x3 square but the whirlpool and skull are printed on opposite sides....see the problem?   This also happened with barrel and statue tokens.

"scrub" is confusing to understand - read the rules and then see the FAQ.

From my own personal experience, I only played this version of a campaign once...and never completed it due to all the rules issues.  I went back to playing Road to Legend but used all the things I could from Sea of Blood to enhance the experience.

I guess to sum it up, if you are looking to have a complete collection of first edition then you should get it to have.  But do not expect to have a ton of fun playing it.

I am sure there are many people who will agree with me on at least one or more of these points.

It's the one expansion that is easily and cheaply available for 1st edition, it was the last expansion and didn't contain miniatures so wasn't snatched up by the 2nd edition players.

I'd buy it, if you like role playing (with miniatures) or create custom stuff for 2nd edition then there will be lots of content you can use.

Or play through the campaign, it's not as good as RTL but its still more epic than any 2nd edition campaign.

Sea of Blood is worth picking up if you play 1st Edition as it's an exceptional expansion to RTL. For the price it is available at right now it's a must have just for the additional dungeons and rumours alone.

It does have flaws. However a group with common sense and a willingness to follow the 'spirit of the rules' will do just fine. In many ways it feels more epic than RTL 1st Ed and has some mechanics which are improved (Treasure maps in particular were a great concept to help discourage dungeon blitzing - where heroes would only do the first two levels of a dungeon).

This is a minor issue, scanning/photocopying (or proxies in a pinch) fix this, while it was a design oversight when they made the game, it's not a deal breaker to have to create a few extra tiles in order to play.

It's also a great tool for people who want to roleplay with miniatures, especially if you ever want to do a nautical campaign.

I bought mine in the last year. Very cheap. Never intended to play it in Descent, tough. The price was so low that I decided to grab it just for the contents, to use in my own board game. And yeah, mine came with Nara too.

So, even if you're still playing 1st edition, it's not a "must have" item, but if you're a completionist or intend to use the contents for another purpose, go ahead, you have my bless.

I went a little overboard with buying expansion packs on Amazon and accidentally bought SoB. Would there be a way to incorporate it into the 2nd edition? I like how it looks so epic.

Thanks for the advice:)

It is the edition with Nara the Fang, but after reading the comments, I may hold off and put my money into more Hero and Monster Packs, Lt minis, the expansions I don't own...aghhhhh....the list goes on!

Or maybe Runebound.....

Will this be recreated for 2nd edition, or is too different?

I don't think so. It's even different in some ways from the core 1st edition.

Thank you. Shame, it looks great fun!

I picked up a copy of this for $5 a couple years ago during FFG's Black Friday sale.  It's the only 1st edition item I own but I got it for the contents.  The components could easily be adapted for a D&D/Pathfinder type adventure, such as Skull & Shackles.  Two full, customizable ships (including one side with ghost ship artwork) made the $5 purchase price worth it. There is also a handy four-part treasure map which makes a perfect replacement for the one in the Kellar's Keep expansion for Heroquest (which I'm missing two parts).  Plus there are some nice storage boxes for each hero and the overlord to store components between plays instead of using baggies.

Short of writing your own homebrew campaign(s) with a nautical theme... not really.

There are no minis to port over via CK/H&M kits (except Nara, but one hero isn't really what I'd call cost-effective.)

There are relatively few dungeon tiles in the box, as they expected you to have the 1E core box for that purpose.

All the items and other cards are designed for 1E stats and systems.

The boats, islands & related tiles are useless in 2E.

1E campaigns are completely different from 2E campaigns.

So, yeah, you could use all this stuff for some truly splendid homebrewing, but you'd have to make up basically all the rules for how they work yourself.
