Dawn of War III trailer!

Recommended Posts

Knights, Gorkanaughts (or is that Morkanaughts?) and Wraithknights actually. No titans.

I'm actually surprisingly not too hopeful or impressed this time around. Not because of no Chaos, they can show in a DLC, whatever. But back to basebuilding.  I prefer to assemble a force, and go in with what you've got. Was never a basebuilding fan, and really preferred DOW's team way of doing it.

Still, it if has it's own co-op missions...

Ultimately time will tell here.

Ok, I've never really looked at Apoc stuff, so I thought all giant robots were titans.

But back to basebuilding.  I prefer to assemble a force, and go in with what you've got.

That was IMO the worse part of DoW 2, I really preferred how it worked in 1. Base building but a minimum of maint or upkeep for it.

Yeah, the base building vs not basebuilding i've noticed is completely divisive in the community.

I've started jsut saying "basebuilding is good when done right". I'd like only one structure or object for troop requisitions, but don't mind it being upgraded etc for defences. Say like the old firebase model, or that big honking thing with the angel statue released with planetstrike. Basically yeah, here is where your troops get dropped, here is your HQ, this heals your troops. Great, you need to upgrade it to do stuff.

I hate "build X for Y". That's just not how 40K works.

This is why I've got a huge love for Battlefleet Gothic: Armada. You choose your fleet, pick your ships and that's it.

That 17 kilometre super carrier? THAT is your HQ.

Are you bringing it into an engagement, or are you sending a few light cruisers and escorts?

+ I love how ship damage/repairs are persistent. Decided to sacrifice your Retribution class so that you won the last game? great play the next 2 games without it.

I want a DOW game like that. Alright, you got 2 Thunderhawks. How are you loading them? Cool, so 2 tacs, a dev, a termin and a pred. Right then. Oh, you can bring an air support option. Pair of Storm Talons. K.

Or, "Defend the firebase, this is what you left there".

Anything but that, and it hurts the fluff. "Oh, so your company of Blood Ravens lost 192 marines this battle.......... Each company is 100 Marines, each marine takes a decade to make..."

This is just the marine example. It's worse for Eldar. Even IG and chaos need supply lines. Orks and nids are the only two that can play this straight.

Well something like that is really a matter of taste.

I liked the base building myself, others don't. I don't think there's a right answer, any more than there's a right answer to what toppings go on pizza.

If they go with a more simplified base building... One for troops, one for vehicles, one for heros, without the tech tree.  I wouldn't mind.   But I like having a base I can expand and put defenses in for.

It really is.

Example. My idea of perfect base building:

You got a squad. !0 men. You've got missions in the area, you need a resupply point and somewhere to plan. Maybe refuel and rearm.

You pick a location, hidden enough, good cover, enough clearance.

You drop the needed components, a module for a command centre, various batteries, sensor modules.

Maybe your first mission for B squad is to patrol a 10km radius and drop off those sensor modules? Ok that's done.

Maybe B squad disappears, maybe not. Maybe they come back, maybe they engaged the enemy.

Now what, do you relocate, or set up defensive positions.

The ARMA games with some of the CTI-like missions do base building well.

The above indicates that I prefer small scale guerilla warfare. I play Raptors on tabletop, this is accurate.

Large scale = bigger more fixed base or carrier. Either way, you should never have a theoretical infinite number of troops. Especially as Space Marines/Eldar.

I'm gonna get it regardless. I won't deny that.

I won't be truly happy with it until it has Guard and or Chaos. Though I'd be happy for inquisition/sisters.

I've no love of Tau. When they came out back in 3rd they were so noblebright and mary sue it was disgusting. They've gotten better over time but i've not gotten over that. It translates into me really enjoying killing them, not - not playing them.

I'd like to see Dark Eldar too. Dark Elves are my favourite fantasy army.

To be fair, we don't really know what races will be in. We only see Orks, Eldar and Marines so far. But we don't even know what year this will be released in so there's a lot more than what we see now. But that said, expecting only 3 races may be the safe assumption for now.

I've no love of Tau.

Xenos are xenos and need to be purged!

I play very defensively so the whole constant battle over resource points doesn't suit me very well. I really like Tau designs, don't much care for their philosophy but I do like me some gundam. Anything imperium is also my preferred second choice and Orks probably third. I will definitely get it but how much I play it will be up in the air.

In the last stand mode they had a Tau and a Necron hero so I wouldn't be surprised if they show up. Sisters of Battle and Dark Eldar are probably pretty low unfortunately.

Side note, a coworker at my first job had bought the Tau codex when it came out and that was my first intro to 40k other than walking by the game store and seeing velociraptors with guns (termagaunts) on the field. This probably skewed my preferences some.

What I would really like to see is a new last stand mode with multiple types of hero per faction and a **** load more wargear.

Mine was a ZX Spectrum demo tape of Space Crusade in early '91.

Then my mum randomly buying me a squad of painted LOTD from a car boot sale because she thought they looked cool.

That got me started onto 2E, Then of course 3E and retroing into the epic RPG 1E.

I'd like to see a hybrid mission/last stand.

each person has a member of whatever faction with wargear they had chosen prior. They are dumped/drop podded/posted/spawned/land/summoned onto a map with said missions. They work together to complete said missions.

Maybe Guard/orks/nids have a squad each. But Chaos/nids/Battlesuit/Eldar just one hero/marine.

So would I...

Incidentally It's very much like the Starcraft 2 map "night of the dead". But more -pre-arming and 40k.

I way prefer co-op games, and while I loved last stand, i think working together to complete goals - even better if procedurally generated - would be awesome.

I mean imagine it. you and 3 other guys, crisis suited out. Dropped from a manta in a rocky/cliffy area, Ork encampment a few klicks away: Your goal is to ensure that the orks are unable to mount an offensive so goals: Assassinate the warboss, Disable the Fighta-Bombers. Sabotage/destroy the Gargant. Kill the Meks, destroy ammu dump etc etc etc.

Maybe the Dark Angels have to hunt for a member of the fallen, but must kill witnesses...

Anyone else think the guys who make these trailers (or the guys who did the cutscenes for Squad Commander) should be hired to make a full-length WH40K movie? Would look worlds better than that Ultramarines film from a few years ago.

I think this trailer was weaker than the older ones, didn't feel like it had any weight to it (things happen too easily, arms ripped off, knights cut in half) so that kinda bothers me. It did look gorgeous though.
