Descent second edition + expansions storage solution

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I just wanted to share my storage box solution for second edition of Descent.

It can hold:

Core game

Labyrinth of Ruin

Shadows of Nerekhall

Trollfens

Lair of the wyrm

Mists of Bilehall

Manor of Ravens

Cooperative expansions

+ some space for 1. edition heroes

I used TJENA box sold by Ikea for box itself and since Kappa (edit: foamcore) is quite expensive in Czech Republic I´m doing all my game inserts from 2mm cardboard that is used for hard cover books.

28193.jpg

Bottom layers: Map pieces

28195.jpg

28196.jpg

Third layer: Monster and hero miniatures

28197.jpg

28198.jpg

Fourth and fifth layers: Hero (and coop expansions) insert, game preparation plus OL insert, in-game stuff insert and mini dice tower bonus

28199.jpg

28200.jpg

Bonus: FIMO search token replacement

28191.jpg

Edit: Send me PM with your e-mail for rar file with 1:1 scale of almost all parts (only last minute modification done to condition and objective token trays. Simply make double bottom to make it shallower.). To let you see whole bucket I added 3D dwg model of whole thing, so you can measure all dimensions.

Final edit:

Thanks to user @peca files are once again avaliable:

So jealous, I own everything released for 2nd Ed so far and I really need to find a nice compact and elegant solution like this one.

2 big thumbs up fellow gamer!

Beautiful design.. I had the medium size BUT after seeing this I've just purchased a larger Tjena box. Some brilliant space use here.

Thanks I originally wanted to use Descent Core box for monster minis, so I had to measure it to perfect fit. Every figure height measured, divided into category to determine if it will stand and where... It was hardcore. After that I decided to purchase Tenja box and I simply modified 3D model and added heroes to empty space.

Kappa is material most of inserts are made of. If I understand it correctly, it´s some kind of foam covered by cardboard from both sides. Maybe you know it by other name see picture

thanks, but I expect that if I purchase Chains that rust I´ll be dealing with serious storage problem. :D Maybe if I cut out those empty spaces for first edition heroes...

Really cool! How do you get it all in and out though?

It´s about 1mm smaller than inside dimensions of box on all sides. So there is enough space to fit it in comfortly, but not enough space for floors to shake inside box.

Sorry for double post, I kinda forgot to quote more people and didn´t find it in "edit post" :D

Foamboard or Foamcore is the English name for it.

Any chance you kept the measurements or schematics?

Yeah, I realised it right after I read your post. I actually google many times for foamcore inserts. Must have been some kind of stroke when I forgot it :D

By the way I have all schematics. Hero, in-game and OL stuff in dwg prepared for print. Everything else is in inventor assembly possible to export to sat, stl, stp (you name it).

Any chance you kept a record of the dimensions of each inert?

Of course :) main dimenstions are 325x304 mm. All other dimensions are directly inside insert files. I plan to somehow wrap it up into one format and upload it here during weekend.

All right, guys. Send me PM with your e-mail (or your preffered file storage site) for rar file with 1:1 scale of almost all parts (only last minute modification done to condition and objective token trays. Simply make double bottom to make it shallower.). To let you see whole bucket I added 3D dwg model of whole thing, so you can measure all dimensions.

OR

you can tell me how to add rar file as attachment :D

Done. I tried to open it while not logged to gmail and it worked. Please let me know if you have any problem with download.

Great.  Nice.  Where is the link?  :D

EDIT: Never mind ... the link is at the bottom of the OP (post #1).

I can not work with these files. How could I see the storage boxes and the sizes?

possibly solved over PM. Anyone else with similar issue?

Hi JT

Any chance you could give the dimension of the Tjena box you used please?  The one in your pictures seems to be taller than the one I found.  Plus, I don't suppose you have the plans/dimensions of the insert you made in any other format than DWG? :)

Cheers

Hi,

it is 32x35x32cm type. But in real, they measure it as outside of cover so real measures are bit smaller.

I suppose I can print it to pdfs, but if you download latest draftsight (free), you should be able to open it as well. Parts itself are not dimensioned in dwgs and you can´t measure in pdf.

Hi,

I finally added those pdfs to first post. Sorry it took me so long. With expired licence for Adobe DC, I can only print one pdf page per day :D

That's a seriously awesome setup, I'm genuinely impressed. I wish I had any clue on how I'd even get started on doing this, but I'm not even sure how I'd get started or get proper materials, let alone assemble the pieces.

But seriously mad props for this, man. Amazing job.

Edit: Huh, in Sweden, Kappa (Kapaskiva/Cellpanå in Swedish) is actually only 2-3€ per A3. Might be worth it. so you just cut things out as according to the .pdf:s and then glue them all together?

Thanks man. There was a lot of will (and decision not to sit by computer all the time) involved before I actually started. Then I sat by computer even more to design this bad boy. :D I tried to divide parts into files, so you should not interchange them between layers if you measure them according to top views (or directly 3D). It might look scary, but if you cut out one dwg file (or folder in case of PDFs) at the time, it becomes quite clear what comes where.

Kappa in czech republic costs about 6-8€ per A3, because there is no demand at market. On the other way, book cardboard costs 1-2€ (including shipping) per 700x1000x2 mm and it comes in various thicknesses. I wouldn´t be able to get all the stuff inside one box if I used 3mm thickness (not even mentioning 5 mm foamcore). Thats how tight it is.  :D

edit: Whole insert took two pieces of 700x1000x2 mm plates of cardboard + glue. Total price (my work not included) was about 5€.

Hmm, that's actually a good point. I can't actually find large 2mm Kappa or cardboard. That might be a challenge.

What program do you use for the 3D views? It might give me a better idea of how this is all supposed to fit together.
