I feel like it was more a matter of specialization- The production model Tie Advanced got additional hull plating and further beefed up the sensor suite at the cost of some mobility, while the Tie Interceptor cut the shield generator and hyperdrive to allow for more speed, and traded the missile banks and targeting suite for a more economical second set of laser cannons.

Although, amusingly, that means Vader's personal starfighter went the opposite direction of pretty much every other starfighter built for Force Sensitives in Legends.
