Should they do away with Epic and make 1 single Tournament model?

Recommended Posts

Should the game just jump up to 150 points, and allow Epic ships in the normal tourney game?

At 150, you could field what you want to field. I don’t see the Epic ships being so great you would see them a lot, but you might see them more than you currently see them (Never). I would expect you would see the smaller ships more, A few a tourney. 90 Minute round times should work to allow games to finish.

inb4 THIS IS NOT 40K

but seriously, epic ships are not in any way shape or form balanced.

I am against going over 100 points unless there are stipulations limiting the number of additional ships.

In casual play I often play 125-150 points with the requirement that we cannot build squadrons whose ship composition exceeds the limits of the 100 point format.  For example: you can fit two firesprays and two academy pilots in at 90 points.  You can then switch pilots and add upgrades at the 150 point limit but are still limited to two firesprays and two TIEs.

I don't see anything wrong with continuing to use the 100-point format as the premier tournament format.

As for epic games, I think there is some room for improvement.  In an epic format you have triple the points in double the space, but tactically the best decision is often to group your forces together, so games often end up developing huge traffic jams.  A system that encourages players to distribute their ships across the board may improve the format.

I think that once all three factions have epic ships having a requirement to spend a minimum amount of epic points will help to balance out the current situation where bringing a huge ship puts you at a disadvantage.

I'd like to see additional officially supported tournament formats instead of less.

I think that rotating the deployment zones so that they were on the short side instead of the long side would be a big help. It would increase the value of weaponry and abilites that can work beyond range three.

Lets address a few things...

90 minutes rounds are still plenty fast.

It seems like you have enough people saying Huge Ships are under-powered, in ratio with people thinking they might be over-powered.  Chances are that means they are fine, and not in the realm where you have to have them to be competitive.

The meta likes a good shake up. This would be another good one.

I'd love to see those stats. I've never seen a single person say the Epics are overpowered anywhere on the forum.

The Huge Ships are built around an escort: the Gozanti and GR-75 are circa 50-60 point support ships and the corvettes are between 100 and 150 points for a single ship.

A 120 point Raider will not take down 120 points of small and large ships. That doesn't mean the Raider is weak. It means it struggles against a squadron of fighters unsupported: they'll charge for its blind spots and stay there. It's a very powerful weapon that needs fighter support to protect its weak spots.

That would definitely help emphasize the value of long-range weapons, yes.  Downsides would be longer games (although you could extend deployment zones to mitigate this), lack of space to maneuver on the flanks, and possible an aggravation of the crowding issue that already exists.

I could think of two ways to spread out the games through game rules:

split deployment rules- Force players to deploy parts of their lists in different parts of the table (half in each corner of the table for example)

objectives spread across the table-  Introduce scenario rules that encourage players to send ships to different areas of the table to win the match.

Of the two, I like the idea of introducing objectives in epic play.
