Concerned by the lack of upcoming books

Recommended Posts

I think it is likely that they slowed down partially due to market saturation, and partially to work on Rebellion, X-wing, Armada, and all the other Star Wars lines.  If they pump it out too fast, too many people start picking and choosing.

I wish I had that kind of willpower, to pick and choose I mean. I haven't played my first session yet and with the arrival of "Special Modifications" this afternoon I just completed the collection so far. Man do I have a lot of reading to do.

Well, speak of the devil: new region book announced!

There's a special corner of hell for lawyers, televangelists and you, sir.

I'm GMing for him this weekend.  I can arrange for an...accident for his young technician. So many things can go wrong when working on heavy machinery.

Well I did nearly kill him.  Nearly killed the whole party for that matter.  Things went so desperately off the rails that the situation rapidly got out of control.  I possibly should have paused the game and regrouped, but rarely do I have such foresight while on the scene.  Oh well, everybody did in fact survive (if only barely.)  The only casualty was the ship.  I do feel a bit bad.  That's their second ship, and they only just bought it.

I'll have to do something nice for them soon.

Do something nice.  Then take it away again.  It can be really fun, especially if it turns into a running gag.  Years ago I played in a Warhammer Fantasy game (prior to FFG) where we couldn't keep any mode of transportation for longer than 2 sessions.  We lost boats, wagons, horses, a dragon turtle, everything.    The only thing we could keep were our boots.  But it became a running gag.  Late in the game, someone even stole the lupins out of our wagon.  Funniest was when our boat (still in the river) was destroyed by a stampede of cattle.

Another thing is, if they can bring out more modules, I will gladly throw more cash at them. I just love a module. Love stories I haven't written - exciting to pre-read them the first time myself.

I'm of two minds on pre-gen adventures...I love supporting FFG and will gladly give them money for Adventures, and they are universally filled to the brim with art and love and care...but my players are the types to poke around behind the scenes from moment one. Keeping them "on task" with a pre-written adventure really cramps their style and I always feel like a poor GM when I have to basically say "that's really not what we're here on this planet to do" or whatever.

Okay all, time for a statistics update!  Through today (11th April, 2016), Edge of the Empire has been without an upcoming book for 18 days, Age of Rebellion has been without for 67 days, and the three lines combined have been without a new announcement for 95 days.  Let’s see where that stands:

--Edge of the Empire:  18 days is pretty much nothing.  Of the five gaps they’ve have, it’s the 4th longest (a.k.a. second shortest), and is only out of last place by 4 days.  Out of all 8 gaps that have occurred in a line (5 Edge, 3 Age), it is the 6th longest, so still not a big deal.  [Total Gaps: 5; Mean Gap Length (without/with current): 54.25 days / 47 days]

--Age of Rebellion:  This is somewhat interesting: 67 days is by far the longest of the three gaps that Age has had with no upcoming products, beating out second place (the 45 days between Stay on Target’s release and Desperate Allies’ announcement) by just over three weeks.  Of all such gaps, it’s also in second place, although it’s still only halfway to the staggering 133 days that Edge was without a product between Fly Casual and Mask of the Pirate Queen.  Hopefully we won’t be getting anywhere near that delay again.  [Total Gaps: 3; Mean Gap Length (without/with current): 26.5 days / 40 days]

--Combined:  Looking at general time between announcements across all three lines, we are solidly in 4th place for the longest wait.  Beating this gap out currently is the time between Far Horizons and Stay on Target in Q2-3 2014 (106 days), the gap between Keeping the Peace and Lead by Example in Q3 2015 (110 days), and the time between Edge’s CRB and Beyond the Rim in the first half of 2013 (142 days).  Looking at that, though, shows that there are extended gaps about once a year, so while annoying, this is not unprecedented, and is not indicative of a lack of upcoming books.  Yes, one could argue that there were extenuating circumstances with the other three major waits, but I would still urge faith and patience.  [Mean Gap Length (without/with current): 51.76 days / 53.73 days]

--Savage Spirits:  Yay, we’re “On the Boat!”  It took Spirits 90 days to go from announcement to boat (compare to Special Modifications and Nexus of Power, the only other books I have currently tracked this data for, at 56 and 77 days, respectively), I’m thinking we’re looking at a minimum of 147 days for the release time of Spirits.  That puts it out at no earlier than June 2nd, and makes it the 8th longest book out of 22.  Much later than I’d like…  [shortest Book: Beyond the Rim – 92 days; Longest Book: Strongholds of Resistance – 253 days; Average Length: 140 days]

I'm sure there are supplements in the pipeline but it's quite strange not to have any announcements or "in development" news about upcoming products.

I think like a lot of people I am looking forward to the Bounty Hunter sourcebook.

Is this concern based on Paizo's support? - are they up to an Adventure Path and a splatbook, at least, a month?

We've discussed this.. sort of.. at our gaming night. FFG is not Paizo. As a company FFG have waaaaay more game lines to support - card, board and RPG. The SWRPG is just one of many lines and I'm AFBs at the moment so can't check the credits for each core rulebook. Maybe FFG are tied into Intellectual Property clauses.

They have 3 RPG lines and NOT ENOUGH STAFF!!!!!! :D

I wouldn't sweat it. If FFG posted a news item tomorrow: 'FFG to cease supporting SWRPG' I'd be pi***d off, but at least they've given us a **** fine rpg anyway IMO ;)

Huh? No it hasn't, it's still waiting to be reprinted. That happened, like, two days ago! It'll take a couple weeks before it had back to the printers for another run, at least.

Or was that what you meant? My apologies if it was.

I'm still not overly concerned.  There have been dry spells in the past.  They've got a ton of reprints going on right now, and I'm sure there's more new books in the pipeline.

There's a lot of other gaming companies that would kill to have even a few books come out a year.  FFG has been throwing texts out at a ferocious rate.

Just referring to the point in regards to this thread, that since the last book released is already slotted to be reprinted is a sign of a pretty healthy line and an indication there shouldn't be cause for concern about FFG's commitment to putting out more materials.

This might be why we've not seen announcements for new books, is that what resources FFG has for getting things printed are tied up in all those re-prints.

New books are nice, but if there's a solid demand for the older material, then FFG would be nuts not to cater to it.

Plus, if nothing else we'll probably start hearing news as GenCon comes closer, since that's essentially the big trade show for the RPG industry.
