FAQ PG 17

Q: Can I shoot at and deal Damage cards to a destroyed ship
that has not been removed from the play area due to the
Simultaneous Attack rule?

A: Yes.

Now, I was discussing this ruling with a couple of people and they stated that it keeps certain ships on the table longer than they should.  Here is the example.

I have a TIE Swarm (PS1 + Howl)  It is now the swarm's turn to shoot.  They must shoot at Biggs because he is the valid target.  After say 4 TIE's have shot, Biggs is dead.  I still have a couple of TIE's to go.  Under the new ruling, my friends say that Biggs stays on the board until all my PS1 TIE's have shot.  I say because it is not a Simultaneous Attack rule - Biggs is not PS 1 - this bit of new FAQ news doesn't apply.

Who is right?

During the Combat phase, all ships with a pilot skill value equal to the active ship have the opportunity to attack before being destroyed. If a ship would be destroyed and it has the same pilot skill value as the active ship but has not had an opportunity to attack yet, it is not destroyed. Instead, it retains its Damage cards and continues to function as normal, suffering any effects on its Damage cards. After it has had its opportunity to attack, it is destroyed and removed from the play area.

  • Even if the ship did not have a valid target for an attack, it is removed after its opportunity to attack passes.
  • While the Simultaneous Attack Rule keeps a ship in the play area, that ship’s abilities and Damage cards remain active.
  • After a ship has resolved its opportunity to attack, before it is destroyed, it can resolve any abilities that trigger after performing an attack.

You are correct, if killed by a higher or lower PS ship, Biggs dies as normal.

If killed by a ship with equal PS, if Biggs hasn't shot yet (doesn't have initiative), then he will remain alive until his opportunity to attack, then he dies (whether or not he actually performed an attack). If Biggs is kept alive by this rule, then his ability still works, so Biggs is slightly better against same PS pilots.

That's not really a new ruling. Any effect a ship has is in effect until it's removed from play. Most times the only way it really changes anything is with the simultaneous attack rule. In that case a ship which is destroyed but not yet removed from play has any effect it might have still in play until it's actually removed.

But in your case the SAR doesn't apply since Biggs isn't PS1.

The example I think that prompted the FAQ came up when you look at having Soontir or Vader and Whisper in the same squad - one of the others kills the only ship in Whisper's arc, but that ship is still on the board because of Simultaneous Fire.  This clarifies that Whisper can shoot at that ship to get a cloak and potentially her pilot ability to trigger also.

That still only works if the defending ship is the same PS as the attacker and hasn't had it's opportunity to attack yet.

If Fel destroys a PS 8 ship, (VI) Whisper still doesn't get a chance to attack it.

(I think you know this, just re-iterating for others that might read this thread.)

Partly derailing this thread... but

Kudos to you FireSpy... You are fairly new around here, but you've really done a great job of helping out on the rules form with helpful and respectful answers to people's questions. And best of all correct ones. :)

Thank you  ^_^ I lurked for probably a year before I made my first post. I try to reference my answers whenever I can, that way people aren't just taking my word for it (and occasionally I change my mind when I double-check the rules).

Somewhat related to the topic: The Simultaneous Attack Rule adds some synergy to Biggs with R2-D6 and Adaptability. If you have initiative, then bump up his PS. Otherwise, bump it up or down to match your opponent's PS.

That... may be the best use of adaptability I've seen yet.

I mean, pity it comes right when R4-D6 is at his best as well, but Biggs deciding whether to be PS 4 or 6 to abuse the simultaneous fire ruling is pretty nifty.

Possibly wait for the PS 4 pilots to rise up against the Ps 3 Scouts?

IF your TIE swarm were all BSP with Adaptability boosting them to PS 5 and matching Biggs while having initiative then the OPs situation would require all the TIEs to shoot at Biggs even if Biggs should be dead.  Of course that is not the case and because Biggs is a different PS than the shooters he'd die when he is supposed to instead of later.

That idea that you could manipulate Bigg's PS to possibly take advantage of that scenario is something.  BroBrothers meet PS 6 Biggs.

I think the main clarification was that same PS can shoot trying to get the crit blinded pilot.

Example I have Vader(PS 9) with 1 hull and Whisper, VI to make him PS 9 both have Han in arc.

These are the only ships left. I shoot with either ship getting the killing blow, but knowing Han can

still shoot I try to get a crit with my other ship and hope for blinded pilot
