Jonny WS 5 Posted March 12, 2016 So last night we were playing one of the co-op variants for Descent (Nature's Ire) and a few situations came up where the monsters would activate either with spotting or engaging the closest or furthest away heroes. In a lot of these cases some of the heroes were tied for distance. Now, I read through the rules at least twice trying to find an example or ruling and could not find any examples or situations to resolve ties. Today, I have searched the forums here and could not find the answer so I am asking: How do you resolve a tie for distance/targets when determining a target hero?I do apologize if I missed something in the rules or on the forums and there is a clear answer somewhere. Zaltyre 1,701 Posted March 12, 2016 It's somewhere in the rulebook, but I don't remember where. In the case of equally valid triggers, the heroes get to decide what to do. So if the activation card says, "attack an adjacent hero" and there are 2 adjacent heroes, the heroes just get to pick one.
Jonny WS 5 Posted March 12, 2016 Yeah, that's what we did. We established a set of "tie-breakers" for all future instances....Such as hero with most wounds, then less fatigue....and after that, if there was still a tie we just did "rock-paper-scissors" I am going to try and re-read the rules again now that I have some fresher eyes and not in the heat of battle with people all trying to chime in with their thoughts. Ideally, I believe the monsters would always attack the hero(s) that will yield the most profit and enable a win.

The way the rules are written, the heroes are also able to choose the outcome that causes the fewest problems for them- it's a built in difficulty scale. Ceasarsalad101 160 Posted March 12, 2016 I would argue you don't want the monsters to choice the easiest kill because it is already quite hard. You can do it of course, but that would make certain items and classes a bit pointless. Why build a tank if the tank doesn't get to tank?
Jonny WS 5 Posted March 12, 2016 I found it!On page 11, there is a small box titled "The golden rules" If a game effect has multiple potential targets and theintended target is unclear, heroes choose the target of theeffect from among the potential targets. Well at least I know now. Thank you all for your input. 1 any2cards reacted to this
KAGE13 270 Posted March 14, 2016 I find part of the strategy is playing the monsters properly to help your heroes. You can play them so they even block each other from moving or attacking. So when there are ties choose which benefits your heroes, it is not cheating this time.
Omnislash024 169 Posted March 14, 2016 (edited) I found it! Well at least I know now. Thank you all for your input. Yup. The heroes decide. Assume the monsters are dumb and just go after the least valuable target at the time. You might as well take all the benefits you can get anyway, seeing as how Co-Ops are only interested in murdering the heroes.
