How Many More Star Wars Films Do Disney Have Planned?

Recommended Posts

its not about making 10 movies, its about making ten good movies.

Ok let's change this up slightly.... What exactly does it take for a movie to be considered a Star Wars movie?

What elements does it require? Figure that out and then we could reasonably discuss if it's possible or not.

Does a Star Wars movie have to have Jedi in it? Does it have to have droids? Does it have battles between starfighters or starships? Does it have to have muppets?

Could a movie that is James Bond'ish only with a blaster and a droid companion be considered a Star Wars movie?

Yeah, it's not as if they're going to run out soon, not if it's handled well and Disney doesn't do bad movies. Even the mediocre ones are enjoyable.

You could even make a band of brothers type series about a small group of clones, straight out of the game Republic Commando.

Err home on the range, bolt, dinosaur, fantasia 2000, meet the Robinson's, treasure planet, atlantis, brother bear, cars 2.

I can go on but those are just this century and animated that were bad.

Disney makes tons of bad films.

Mediocre, not bad.

And most of those are aimed at a younger target audience than you might be around, but Cars 2 for instance is enormous, huge, a massive success, if you want to buy something for a 5-year old (or thereabouts) boy, you can't go wrong with Cars merchandise. Treasure Planet and Atlantis are cult classics that are highly underrated, Bolt is great fun and there is not really anything on your list that should be called 'bad'.

But then again, you do tend to see things in a black-and-white spectrum. ;).

Now, Disney Toon Studios, their direct to video branch, they can make some bad movies. Just remember all those direct to video sequels...

Disney bad isn't quite on the same scale. I mean, is any recent disney movie quite as bad as say fantastic four (2015)?

I didn't see that one, how bad was it?

Out of 200 reviews, less than twenty were positive. Average 3.4 out of 10.

The planned sequel has been cancelled. Expect another reboot in a year or two, when it's use it or lose it time again.

Disney makes tons of bad films.

Disney's Atlantis is a great movie, easily one of the best animated movies in the past couple decades.

However, I agree with your overall point, Disney does indeed occasionally make bad movies. Their track record is A LOT better in the past 10 years or so than it was, in say, the '70s and '80s.

The problem with Disney movies isn't that they are bad, but that they frequently seem rather soulless. I've seen a number of jokes over the years about computer programs that take over writing movies. That's how some Disney movies feel like they weren't written by an artist, but processed by an algorithm.

You mean the 'what would happen if X had feelings' algorithm?

What if Cars had feelings, what if Planes had feelings, what if Toys had feelings, what of Feelings had feelings...

After typing that out... the word feelings is now mush in my head.

10 more good Star Wars movies is easily doable. Easily. 2 trilogies in this post-RotJ era already planned, and 3 Anthology movies coming, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. From there, you can move on to:

- Old Republic, a totally different take on the setting that merits at least a trilogy, if not more.

- Practically infinite 'genre movies' within the setting. A Bounty Hunters western on Tatooine, an all-out war movie set during the Clone Wars, Das Boot- Star Destroyer Edition, Battle of Britain- X-wing edition, an Alien or Preador-esque horror movie with a team of Jedi sent to investigate a new species, so on and so forth.

- Revisiting the Clone Wars, filling in the III-IV gap and the VI-VII gap

- Going forward, unlimited possibilities with the 'Main' franchise...

Yeah, they're not going to run out of ideas any time soon. And as long as they're making them, I'll be watching them!

Wait, TWO post-Jedi trilogies have been planned already?

What's the other one?

I'd wager either a remake of the prequels or episodes 10, 11, and 12.

I think if they mae movies with new things liek that would be great. Rouge one is going to be a war movie, that's cool. Just based on Hollywood lately, I fell like originalty isnt big right now.

Whether you like them or not, the Marvel movies have done a good job of trying different themes within the framework of superhero movies.  Star Wars could easily do this, as mentioned above.

Should be interesting what Disney does with the Star Wars I.P.

They're pretty much full throttle with Marvel.

But look what happened with Star Trek. They definitely overloaded the core audience and there was backlash.

Does Star Wars have as much appeal as Marvel?

Yes, if not more so.

No. Marvel's movie all fit into their action-adventure mold. They aren't exactly bad movies, but they feel the same. People who seriously call Winter Soldier a political thriller have just swallowed the MCU kool aid. Now, we will see how much of that was Feige or how much of it was their creative council that recently got dissolved.

It is also important to remember, that while Disney owns both Marvel and LFL, they are both their own companies operating with a decent amount of independence. I look at Kathleen Kennedy's resume, and am confident in LFL's future. I am extremely excited with how she seems to be seeking out up and coming talent, and giving them some actual say in the making of the movie, instead of looking for journeymen directors.

I don't expect good things if TFA or the new EU books are any indication of direction. The franchise will be milked harder. Will they be Legacy or Prequel bad? Probably not, but they bought the franchise for the merchandise lines, so I expect younger and softer audiences to be catered too.

Ironically Disney is the reason I want to get back into 40k.
