Panzeh 948 Posted March 9, 2016 I wonder if more pre-registration would help out. Get everyone signed up ahead of time, get your pairings done the day before, and hit the ground running the day of. You might gain 10-20 minutes at most that way in the first round. It's not that significant over an all-day event.
Ebak 1,102 Posted March 9, 2016 At my local game store, out tournaments are usually on Saturday and have registration from 10:00am (opening time) to 10:30am, and the tournament begins swiftly with little messing around. There's about 15 minutes between rounds to allow people to quickly pop to the bathroom or grab some drinks. Usually the tourney is done by 6pm, sometimes 7pm. This is a long haul, but if a game is that popular, that's what has to be done. I don't play in these events much anymore due to other commitments. However my FLGS got regionals this year and they are trying to get the streaming booth ready so they can stream not only the store championship, but regionals too. Given that I am usually called for commentary that probably means a good 12 hours in a booth at regionals. The store I think is opening early at 8:00 and starting at 8:30 or 9:00 so that the event gets underway as soon as possible, plus if we want to be done by 10, it's looking like we can't have a lunch break, but the TO did say that if he extended the time between rounds to 25 minutes, in theory that should give anyone who finishes a match early time to go and grab something to eat. I'm just hoping the local fish and chip shop (literally a minutes walk up the road) is prepared for 120 people (in waves) coming to their door looking for sustenance, I think the hope is we can get them to deliver to the staff at least, although i wouldn't mind stretching my legs from that booth once in awhile. 2 player1399050 and Slugrage reacted to this
elfholme 117 Posted March 9, 2016 Trust me, you need 75 minutes. 60 minute tournaments skew results, with a LOT more games going to time. 60 minutes is a decent alternative to time strapped stores, but it is by no means the ideal. And Vassal is only a viable option until some game company gets annoyed by it. Agree with everything above. 75 minutes are the way to go. There are just too many rounds to cut to top 8 at most events I've been to, IMO. Even with 60 minute rounds, a couple 15 minute breaks, 10 minutes to get results sorted and a minimum of 1/2 hour for lunch (and probably another half hour for dinner) will really push the time out. With 6 rounds, you're talking about: Round 1 - 60 Setup for round 2 - 10 (70 total) Round 2 - 60 (130) Lunch - 30 (160) Setup for Round 3 - 10 (170) Round 3 - 60 (230) Setup for Round 4 - 10 (240) Round 4 - 60 (300) Setup for Round 5 - 10 (310) Round 5 - 60 (370) Dinner - 30 (400) Setup for Round 6 - 10 (410) Round 6 - 60 (470) So 8 hours given reasonable breaks and setup time, assuming everyone is ready on time each round and there are no delays. If that's just to get to top 8, there are still another 4 hours to go to crown a champ. If the rounds are more reasonable 75 minutes, it's another 90 minutes to get to top 8 and 5 hours instead of 4 to get to a champ. That's ridiculous. Any event that needs 6 rounds to get to top 8 should be a two day event, period. At least, it would have to be if I was going to consider going. If I don't make the top 8, I get to go home a day early. 6 rounds is plenty for me to have fun. More than that in one day and X-Wing becomes more chore than game, IMO. 1 higgie301 reacted to this

X Wing tournament threads are way too long. We need more two part discussions. 7 SoontirFel, Vorpal Sword, Killerardvark and 4 others reacted to this

I don't want to come to two separate threads - one 5 page thread is how it was intended, you just don't have enough endurance to read 5 pages, not our problem... Slugrage 5,007 Posted March 9, 2016 Oddly enough, there was a thread asking about spectators staying for the cut rounds, and A User Not To Be Named tried very hard to turn it into this thread - Part Deux

loki_tbc 357 Posted March 9, 2016 I honestly think vassal is the future of tournaments. Played on your schedule and your own time frame. I honestly don't think I'll play in another tourney unless it is the 4 round kind...with cuts. No thanks. You can keep your electronic leash. I would rather my gaming be done analog and in-person. 1 MechGumbi reacted to this
Holmelund 778 Posted March 9, 2016 I wonder if more pre-registration would help out. Get everyone signed up ahead of time, get your pairings done the day before, and hit the ground running the day of. All the events I TO are Pre-registration only. People send in their list at least 2 days in advance and we start ON TIME. Players not there and ready at tournaments start are DQ´ed. Makes for much easier and smother tournaments.
