Target priority in a Palp list (priority generally)

Recommended Posts

I've had decent luck swatting Soontir out of the sky first.

Then the shuttle.

Then Vader.

But it all really comes down to two things: 1) How good the other player is.  2) Getting at least average rolls.

I've lost to Sith Lords twice because I was simply outflown.

I've lost to Sith Lords twice because my dice decided "Hey, you're throwing 4 dice with target-lock AND focus!  You're gonna get 4 blanks and reroll into 4 blanks!"

I've beaten Sith Lords several times as well.

So based on that, plus what I've seen in other games where people have played against Sith Lords and it's variations (typically Palp-Shuttle, Vader, and Fel....sometimes replacing one of them with Omega Leader or Wampa or both...or even Carnor Jax)....

You target the squirrely Ace first.  This will typically be Fel or any PtL Autoceptor.  If not available, then it's Vader.  Stress dealing is important here, if not, blocking.

Then you target the shuttle.  Easy target, will usually be in range for a quick redirect once the Ace is gone.

Then you concentrate on the rest of the list.

The only variation is if Wampa's there....you paste him first since he's the biggest threat.  And as a typically unmodified TIE, he's the easiest to wipe out.  Then you go normal target priority.

Honestly it only depends on your list.

Got a swarm? The Palpmobile can die in a single round, and with it goes a substantial utility of the opponent's list.

Got HLC+Crack brobots? They can vaporize an ace in one round, don't give them time to outmaneuver during the 2+ turns the shuttle will take to kill.

What you bring to the table dictates the strategy you should employ.

My usual preferred order is:

Scariest Ace

Second Ace

Palp

Depending on who the second guy is though, you may save him for last. and do Palp second.

If you accomplish step 1 in a timely manner, the other two steps are usually pretty simple. The longer it takes to kill the first Ace the harder it is imo.

It does depend on what you are flying and what other ships he has around Palp.  Wampa is much more scary if you fly regen Poe/Corran obviously.

Honestly, I think one of the reasons Palpatine Aces is a successful list is that there is no easy decision regarding target priority. Palpatine is such a potent force multiplier that ignoring him makes the task of going after the aces much more difficult. But the shuttle is easily able to tank through a couple of rounds of fire, at least from most lists, so attacking him early often gives the aces plenty of time to set up a flanking maneuver or pincer. That typically leads to the aces inflicting a lot of damage in a short time.

I still lean toward minimizing Palpatine's impact by attacking the shuttle, but it's not an easy choice--and as others have said, it depends a lot on the composition of the two lists involved, and even on the context of setup.

I just learned the hard way that with the Decimator version, you definitely need to kill him first. I had a crack swarm and got Whisper, but my four remaining ships could do nothing even though the Decimator was 1/4 into hull already. Kenkirk + Isard just locked that out. Crazy thing was that there were two Palpatine-Decimators in the top 4, 3 Emperors total at my store championship. I got the Chiraneau escorted by Vader quickly which made me really not fear Kenkirk enough. I finally understand how good he is. Two amazing rolls quickly vaporized my Omega Leader who was untouched and had him target-locked too, poor guy.

Thanks for the advice.

I typically fly triple T-70s. Probably PTL BB8 poe and a red vet and maybe red ace.

In that case I'd recommend killing whatever ace you think is easier to kill. Usually in a fel vader palatine list that's vader since he doesn't get autothrusters and has one less token. I don't have a ton of experience against the wampa, vader, Omega Leader variant or playing triple x, but in your scenario I'd recommend wampa or omega leader first if that's what your opponent gives you.

I haven't played that many games against palps with 2 aces.  And I've had so so success when I have.

In terms of the shuttle, I probably wouldn't make it your first priority, but try to setup your ships so that if they don't have a shot on the aces and/or have a weak shot that likely won't hit, they can shoot the shuttle instead.

Also if you have a big list, like 4 or more ships, if you have a cheap filler like a z-95 or a tie fighter, you could have them harass the shuttle by themself, ideally getting behind it and plinking it to death.

For the aces, they really aren't much different than other builds.  Palpatine only changes ONE die a turn.  While that is very powerful, I think it is often more feared then it should be.  Just try to block them and/or give them stress, then hit them with everything you got.

Feedback arrays and the doom shuttle work great as well.

As a very general rule of thumb, I'd shoot the most glass-cannon-y ace first, usually whatever they're running that isn't Soontir, unless they plant Soontir on an asteroid/in front of your Stresshog/whatever.

I play Soontir, Vader and Palpshuttle. Most people tend to target my Vader first. Of note, I don't run him with Engine upgrade, which most people are aghast when they see that. (I run hims with Stealth Device, Juke and ATC.) I also take a bit of heat on my shuttle, as I fly into combat with it. Most of the other people I see flying this build keep the shuttle away from combat.

Personally, I prefer people to go after Soontir, as he has done an exceptionally great job at dodging everyone's shots (first experience playing against Crack was eye opening and only the 2nd time that I lost Soontir before my other ships.) The one time I lost Soontir early was against someone playing 4 Tie/Ints and he successfully blocked my move. Wasn't pretty.

Also of note, both Soontir and Vader do a great job dodging TLT's. (My first target, if it's on the board, is the Stresshog, as that is the most dangerous ship to my build.)

For me, always the not soontir

Followed by soontir

Then palpie at the bottom

Gotta be flexible ofc, esp when dealing with arc dodgers, but generally the not soontir does more damage and dies more easily and the shuttle alone is almost autowin for whoever's not flying it

But remember to be fluid. If something's isolated and can be burnt down without trouble, even removing paplie is a good deal

I say it's whatever presents the easiest target.  Most days I feel like that's going to be Vader, especially if you can get some guns on him during the first pass when he's still setting up his TL and can't turtle behind Evade+Focus.  But if I see an opportunity to block and kill Fel, or wipe the Shuttle off the board before it can ever fire... well, that changes things.

I play palpaces almost exclusively at tournaments. If you think that prioritizing the same targets is the best way to deal with them, you lost the game before the match starts. He who prays to palpatine daily can sense your fixation issues and will just react accordingly to your disadvantage. It's very simple to develop your strategy, really. People just never bothered doing some basic, proper analysis and stress themselves pre-match.

What's your list? What's its strength? What's its weakness?

Quad TLT? Get behind palp and finish him off in two rounds of firing. Otherwise focus fire Vader and he'll be done real quick. Don't bother focus firing the filthy Interceptors/Phantoms. Just try to prevent them from flanking you and life's good. Scum Y-Wings are especially good at this. If you see wampa, what can wampa do to your tanky 5 hull brutes? Nothing.

Miranda/Corran/Poe as the lead ace? Play very defensively. You can regen. They can only pray. Also If you poe is using R5-P9, don't risk doing R1 shots at the shuttle. I've killed too many Poes getting bump to my lovely buffalo. If Corran is your lead ace then you should never get in Wampa's arc. If you do, double tap and run away.

Aces with HLC? They are nutcrackers. Crack that Interceptors/Whisper and shuttle can't do anything. Or if you can avoid the aces bully the shuttle hard. Predator Rec Spec Dash is unforgiving.

Swarms? By swarm I mean five ships and above lists. Block the aces, let the rest focus fire on shuttle.

Certainly I can't mention everything, but with the above examples you should get a clear idea. Play to your list's strengths. It's that simple.

They do pretty good... (I won a SC with this list)

I've noticed that people go for my Whisper the most.  I usually dangle OL out there and see if they take that bait, if they do, Whisper brings it home on a flank.  If they go after Whisper I'm usually putting as much damage in with the shuttle and OL.  So I guess this list would boil down to who you think you can beat end game...  OL took down a 1-hull and 2-hull brobot by himself, which I guess shouldn't be any surprise.  He's also taken down a Jake when the shuttle couldn't get through.  I did have one game where I royally screwed up with Whisper and ended up with my shuttle chasing down a hawk.  Got him for the win and I will always take great pride in that one.  That shuttle was playing bumpercars lining up a shot in the asteroids!

My list has lost twice:  Both times to VI Vader and VI Juno Palp.  That list, UGH!  Only thing is that TLT's are a horrible matchup for that list.  I've tried rushing past Vader and Juno to knock out Palp first.  Didn't work.  I tried mixing it up in the asteroids, banking on flying better.  Nope, Tie Advances are amazing in the asteroids.  One day I'll figure out a weakness... ONE DAY.

I guess when flying against something with 2 aces, sometimes I will feign one ace to line up a few range 1 shots on another.  That has failed me with regen aces (and Juno/Vader).  I guess the thing when flying against a Palp Aces list is that you HAVE to be flexible.  Because those lists are more flexible than yours.

I have no clue. There is only one Palp Aces player in my area and he isn't very experienced and he hasn't been playing it a lot lately. If I had to face a good player using it I'd probably just kill myself. Maybe then my opponent will feel sorry for me and play ships that aren't invincible.

I'd bid above PS 2 so I could see where the shuttle placed. Then I'd try to vaporize it asap. I would also position myself between two targets and try to feint towards one and then suddenly swerve towards the other. Vader is actually possible to kill so if you ignore the shuttle he's the ace that you could kill easily.

i won my SC without Fel, because something told me to be afraid of Ten Numb and crackswarms... there was 1 ten numb and 3 different crackswarms one of which was actually a vader Juke Comms Obsidianx3 list or crack+ list.

Had OL Juke Comms SD instead of  fel.

who shut down the brobot list i faced twice. TAKE THAT GLITTERSTIM, DRUGS ARE BAD.... mmmkay

I really think it comes down to target of opportunity. Kill the first ship that makes a mistake. If you go hell bent on a specific ship, they will make sure it never gets touched. I had a Z95 swarm (practicing with thread tracers on Blount and clusters on others) and he went full at Fel. I just flew Fel as far away as possible. He didn't get shots for a few rounds, but he lived and caused enough havoc that Vader had time to kill Blount. Then I brought the shuttle in as a distraction. It worked a little too well as he smoked it with all his cluster missiles (my idea to bump a few to prevent actions/attacks missed by less than a base). Even though my shuttle got taken out, he only had 3 Zs at that point and Vader/Fel were not touched at all.

I think the worst thing you can do is the obvious move, whatever that is. Do something wacky, make them make mistakes, then make them pay for it.

I run...

OGP + Palpatine

Vader + Title + VI + Engine Upgrade + Advanced Targeting Computer

Fel + PTL + Title + Autothrusters + Stealth Device

Total: 99 points

Depending upon your meta, you can drop VI for something like Crackshot or whatever you find useful. My meta has PS10 Poe all over the place so I need VI.

What are a couple of good Palp Aces builds?

go in to MJ's Store championship result thread, and type in palp aces you'll see plenty of viable choices.

OL + Vader + Shuttle

fel+vader+shuttle

OL+Whisper+shuttle

Fel+Jax+ Shuttle

Vader+Jax+ shuttle

ect.

I ran

OL, Juke, Comms, SD

Vader Crackshot, Prockets, EU, Title ATC

Palpshuttle + Ion cannon.

to a SC victory.
