Advice on my Character Build

Recommended Posts

So, I've been GMing full time since EotE came out, but in our new F&D campaign, I'm only GMing part time, so I just wanted to run a few bits on my character past everyone for advice.

I'm running a Chadra-Fan Artisan, and I'm going to primarily be the party mechanic I'm using Ranged Light as my primary combat skill, but I don't yet have any ranks in it, though my Agility is 3 and I have the Agility Upgrade on Enhance to raise it to 4 if necessary. For now, my XP is all earmarked for talents, and I was thinking I would use technology to make up for my lack of skill with my blaster.

Right now I'm using an HL-27 Light Blaster for the Accuracy, but my thought is, once I've saved up enough cash, to switch to a Dragoon Calvary Blaster. Then, for attachments, I was thinking on the Electronic Sighting System (so I could aim at Short as an incidental, and can mod for a +1 to Accuracy), and a Force-Attuned Resonator (mostly for the Innate Talent: Prescient Shot mod), Superior (of course), and then I was thinking something kind of odd; maybe a Forearm Grip. Even though I only plan to use it in Pistol mode, not Carbine mode, so the base stats of the Grip would do nothing, it has another Accuracy +1 mod on it. But then again, since logically the grip wouldn't do any good unless I was using both hands, and if I was wielding it 2 handed, maybe it would by default use Ranged Heavy instead of Light... Haven't looked through the rules to see if all 2-handed ranged weapons use Heavy or what. Ah well, that would only come up through using Intuitive Improvements/Tinkerer in the future (I plan on taking Armorer after getting what I want our of Artisan, and probably Outlaw Tech or Gadgeteer or one of the new Technician specs from Special Modifications once it come out). If I've got an extra hard point, probably I'll throw on Bantha-Eye Sight for the heck of it. Maybe a Telescopic Scope if I happen to put a Range-Finder on my armor, to keep help reduce the difficulty for when I do have to make long-range attacks. Altogether, that'll add around 3 boost dice and free aim at Short, 4 boosts if the Forearm Grip would work, and 1 free advantage and an extra one if the check is successful, which seems pretty good.

Of course, if the grip doesn't work, maybe I'll go with Paired Weapons instead, and duel wield pistols? What would be a good pistol to use as my off-hand weapon? I'm thinking anything with Inaccurate would be a good idea, since it wouldn't apply to the dice pool... And maybe a Blaster Actuating Module, although I notice if says to add the setback die to "all ranged light checks when using this weapon), so I think that would count a combined weapon check, even if I was using the other blaster as primary... I think? Some clarity would be helpful.

As for armor, right now I'm wearing Armored Clothes, and I'll probably just focus on crafting myself a good suit of armor, though if anyone has any suggestions on good attachments (besides the usual suspects, Superior and Cortosis).

I think that's everything for now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

By raw a Dragoon is a Light Ranged weapon and thus cannot have ranged heavy mods, even if it can be wielded using the ranged heavy stat. Thus forearm grip is a no go, otherwise, even so I wouldn't allow a character to benefit from a forearm grip while wielding a weapon one handed e.g. blaster carbines as a forearm grip is about extra surface to stabilise a weapon.

To my knowledge there is only one modification that can add boost dice to a ranged light weapon, and that is a force sensitive mod that only works other meatbags. Can't remember the name of it, but since your multiclassing into armourer I would expect you to have the book that has it. ^^

A number of choices where you can go, actually.

Set Trigger is really good for those strong pistols where you absolutely want to connect with the first shot, adds two success and a threat to the first shot. I have a dueling pistol that uses just that, though it's noctoriously unreliable for a six shooter (has a setback dice and generates a threat on the first pull. It kicks!)

paired is fairly good. Generally speaking pairing a less accurate firearm is a good idea as the setback wouldn't apply to the first attack to the best of my knowledge. I am not too familiar with raw. I would only do that if your fairly confident in your aim already.

For armour, Kaner layering (I think it's called? Guardian book) is pretty good for a budget option/realistic option as it adds a extra soak against blaster fire. Most damage comes from blaster weapons so it will always see use.
