Poe / Jake / Kyle - too weak?

Recommended Posts

I'm a fairly new player working on a list for a tournament next weekend. This is adapted from something I saw either here or on reddit (can't find the original thread):

(32) Jake Farrel(24): (0) Test Pilot (3) PTL (1) VI (3) Proton Rockets (1) Munitions Failsafe

(34) Poe Dameron(31): (3) R5-P9 (0) Integrated Astromech

(34) Kyle Katarn (21): (1) Determination (6) TLT (3) Recon Specialist (3) Moldy Crow

So the idea is for Kyle to generate a lot of focus and hand it off to Poe and Jake to help them out. I've played it in 4 casual games so far and am 1-3. I guess what I'm curious about is, do you feel like this list is innately weak because of the low total hull/shield(and Kyle's relatively low survivability), or am I just flying it badly?

I mean, obviously I'm flying it badly - I'm very new and still learning how to effectively arc-dodge with Jake. If the list would be decent in capable hands, then I'll probably still play it for the learning experience. If the consensus is the that the list is in general just too weak even when flown very well, then I'll probably go for something else instead.

Any thoughts on some small modifications that might help? I haven't been able to come up with anything other than the obvious choice to drop the Proton Rockets, Munitions Failsafe, and Integrated Astromech and then adding Autothrusters to Jake and Poe, but I haven't managed to get my hands on a starviper yet and don't think i'll be able to get one by next week.

Thanks for any thoughts/feedback!

I wouldn't bother with the moldy crow title. Recon spec will get you two focus a turn, so use one and hand one out. I also wouldn't bother with munitions fail safe on Jake as its a point wasted. If you miss with 5 dice (and should have TL as well as focus) you may as well just pack up and go home! If you can get/borrow auto thrusters do it. They are really useful.

Also try to get VI at least on Poe. Tactically it can be good fun pushing the limit with Jake st the start of the combat phase to really mess with opponents but if you do this you don't really need VI as you will most likely move last with him anyway.

Hopefully some of that is helpful

- If you stress Jake, he cannot use his ability, so it makes for bad synergy with Kyle. Outmaneuver is often chosen for Jake.

- Only rarely will Proton Rockets do no damage whatsoever. In fact, some opponents might choose to suffer a bit of damage just to make sure you don't get a second chance at a better roll. So I would not use Munitions Failsafe.

Kyle is definitely the weak link. Honestly his ability isnt worth the cost. Kit Jake and Poe as mentioned above and use the additional pts for a different ship. You can almost fit Miranda with tlt. You could easily fit a Y with tlt and r3a2 and so on. barring that at least consider a hull upgrade in place of crow.

I run a list close to this. But my list is.

Jake: refit, test pilot, outmaneuver, PTL

Kenyan: PTL, engine, advanced sensors

Kyle: Crow, Recon, TLT

It's 100 points. I like to push the limit off of the focus that Kyle gives to Jake. It's pretty handy actually. I will also bump on purpose and the give a focus at the start of combat so I can barrel roll out of arc. Kenyan the way he's built can be an arc dodger too. It's my favorite B-wing build right now.

As far as tournaments go. It can be weak. Kyle can go done really quick so you have to play him very good. Engine upgrade on Kyle would be optimal IMHO. I just ran out of points.

I like you list, but I would make a couple small tweaks.

Jake: Push the Limit, Veteran Instincts, Prockets, Autothrusters (33)

Kyle: Rec Spec OR Moldy Crow, TLT (30) this is a play style choice, slow opening, or quick? Slow=Crow, Quick=RecSpec

Poe: Veteran Instincts, R5P9, Autothrusters (37)

A perfect 100 points!

The idea with the list is to bait your targets, one by one. I would engage with Jake first, then Kyle the next turn, then Poe the turn after. This way you can move Jake and just do one action, usually a focus or evade if the enemy is a higher PS, TL if you need to be aggressive. At the beginning of the combat Kyle gives Jake the focus, he does a free BR or Boost, and then pushes the limit to either completely dodge an arc, or set up a really nasty Procket shot. Next turn Jake works on flanking\outmaneuvering, doing the same action combo as before. You should be able to get behind the enemy, even if you bump on your maneuver. Kyle skirts the edge of combat, only staying close enough for his ability. Poe enters last and is PS10 Poe... At this point Kyle should have soaked up a shot or two, same with Jake, but Poe should be full health. Now your opponent has hard choices. Try to finish off a damaged ship, or try to burn down Poe's defenses? Both are bad for them and good for you. If they go for Poe, run him away and pick at the enemy with Jake and Kyle, if they switch targets, get aggressive with Poe and get into range one. This list can play a longer game than Palpatine+Aces, and is actually a strong counter. Jake moving in combat can drop Soontir with a procket easily, and do serious damage to Vader as well. You want Poe in the end game, just engineer the encounter to make it happen and you'll start winning those games ;)

I like the idea of having Kyle to support Poe and Jake, since the additional focus can help a lot to both of them, I went to a tournament last saturday with Poe, Jake and two prototypes and ended on third place but I actually think it could have been better with Kyle.

How about this?

A-Wing: · Jake Farrell (24)
Push The Limit (3)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Autothrusters (2)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)
Veteran Instincts (1)
T-70 X-Wing: · Poe Dameron (31)
· Lone Wolf (2)
· R5-P9 (3)
Autothrusters (2)
HWK-290: · Kyle Katarn (21)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
Recon Specialist (3)
· Moldy Crow (3)

Poe is about durability and I think that autothrusters can do a lot more to that, specially considering that on some turns he will have two focus and can spend one on attack, I noticed that with Poe it is VERY important to have a focus token each turn, specially with R5-P9. Poe with Lone Wolf feels indestructible in the late game (except against TLTs with modified dice, since he only can evade 2 hits, so be careful about it).

Also, you want to arc dodge a lot and try to be behind your opponents with this kind of squad, this list is at 99, so you can have a tiny initiative bid against Soontir's lists.

I feel that in the current meta initiative is very important, specially against TLTs with high pilot skills (Jan Ors, Miranda, Horton, etc), you can also put VI on Poe instead of Lone Wolf.

I played a pretty fun game yesterday with a similar list. Opponent flew Vader, Howlrunner, Academy Pilot, and some TIE f/o.

I used:

Jake with VI, Chardaan Refit, Test Pilot, Autothrusters, PTL

Kyle with VI, Ion Cannon Turret, Recon Specialist, Moldy Crow

Poe with Crack Shot, Plasma Torpedoes, BB-8, Weapons Guidance

Kyle helped control Vader and drew the fire of pesky TIEs while passing out focus to either help trigger Jake to block or tail, or set Poe up for some really nasty focus kills with Weapons Guidance and his regular ability. I threw IA on there to see how it would work if it came down to Poe against the world (luckily I didn't lost any ships) and torpedoes for a "Gotcha!" moment (which also never came to pass). Vader spent a lot of time sadly drifting one movement ahead and then attempting to barrel roll out of arc, but with three very different and very fun options to target him he didn't last long (Kyle actually had the honor of delivering the killing blow with an ion cannon blast). Might remove the torpedoes and BB-8 to play with some different astromech configurations, but I like having the barrel roll option available whenever I'm flying with a boost-capable ship.
