X-wing Battle Royale - 1 ship each, Max 50 pts, many players

Recommended Posts

"Last man standing" wins. This is happening at my FLGS soon.

What would you take?

Here's what I'm thinking.

E-Wing: · Corran Horn (35)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Proton Torpedoes (4)

Fire Control System (2)

· R2-D2 (4)

Engine Upgrade (4)

While I like this build I wonder if you wouldn't be better served in this instance by changing FCS to sensor jammer. I am on the lone wolf train also. These two changes together should mean your in the end game where your gonna be a nightmare to deal with. The jammer and LW are both extra nasty in this format. LW is always active and no one wants to drop their panties for a chance to scuff corrans paint.

Edit- 49 without the torps..

Don't forget to factor in how many opponents you expect. In a 12 person game, survival is key and you'll want things that can work multiple times, like Lone Wolf and Luke Skywalker's ability, or Sensor Jammer, etc.

If it's a 4 or 5 person game that you expect to be smaller, dodging arcs is more valuable, in which case you might want a ship that's equipped with VI. Moving last with boost and roll options is an amazing method of defense, as long as there aren't 13 opposing arcs on the field. Factor that in.

Honestly, just take 35 point Soontir. You're indestructible.

I think Soontir is an obvious target and everyone will go gunning for him. He's indestructible but not *that* indestructible. If there are 8+ players all flying independently, he'll be hard pressed to avoid them all...

Mind you, that's true for every ship on the table. Soontir will do well in this format, no doubt about it - I'm just not sure he won't be Public Enemy #1.

Picking an unassuming, B-list Ace like a B-Wing or Starviper may help you during the initial engagement but when it's you vs. a Soontir or regenerator in the end game you're done.

I say go for Soontir. You have 9 PS so you get to place last/near last and can control how the initial engagement goes. You can place yourself in a relatively safe spot and semi-slow roll (but try to not make it obvious).

Free for all matches in X-Wing are typically just based 100% on politics and king making, with the person in second the whole game coming out on top. I'd try to convince them to change the event to team epic or something.

  • Whisper
  • Lone Wolf
  • Sensor Jammer
  • Rebel Captive
  • Advanced Cloaking Device

Make yourself seriously unappealing as a target.... drop into cloak on turn one and only decloak if you've got a kill lined up with no comeback. You've got a fighting chance against an end-game ace - although Veteran Instincts may be better than Lone Wolf.

you could probably do up a k-wing fairly nice...

Miranda doni

chewbacca

twin laser turret

advanced slam

proton bombs

extra munitions

ion pulse missiles

should come out at exactly 50 unless I miss my guess. (I am doing thus without cards to hand)

with that ship you should be able to play a fairly opportunistic game. Slam makes you fast enough to stay out of trouble, tlt lets you pick away at whatever feels juciest, and the ordnance gives you a nice surprise. Combined with the natural shield regen and chewie should be tough enough to go the distance.

Of course it's all theory, not had the chance to do a grand melee myself.

IG-88C with PtL, AT, and Sensor Jammer is going to be extremely hard to take down if you have a focus and evade every turn. I think the only glaring weakness is the large base in this scenario.

The PS I don't see being an issue until you're down to 2 or 3 ships.

Even though you're wasting 11 points, I might just go with Vader, ATC and Lone Wolf. It's PS9, you can save your Evade and Focus to use defensively until the number of enemy ships gets low, you've got Prockets to discourage people from getting up into your face, and firing them off with Focus and one blank re-roll is pretty decent. Once the number of targets is down somewhat, you're a PS9 Ace with an 11 point bid so you should move last, and you can flip on your targeting computer and have heavily modified attacks.

It's not as defensive as some other builds, but it also legitimatly brings the heat during the end game while giving you a pretty fair amount of defensive tools for the early game (Focus/Evade/Blank-Rerolls/PS9 Arc Dodging)

I've played this free for all format in 30 and 40 point versions with 3-5 players, restricted to small ships only.

Winning is mostly luck (the guy who happens to stay out of combat longest usually wins). Best builds seem to maximize green dice and have high PS and ability to change position after maneuvering. Boost, barrel, and Daredevil are all extremely useful, as is taking two actions (Vader, PTL, EI). Lone Wolf seems useful at first glance but an EPT is better filled by VI, Daredevil, or PTL (unless you're an Awing with two EPT).

In 30pts, Jake Ferell (PTL, Stealth Device, Chardaan, Lone Wolf) seems best, though he has trouble pushing damage on attack. 30pts is too small for a decent Soontir or Vader.

In 40pts, Soontir (PTL, Stealth, Shield Upgrade) and Vader (Daredevil, Engine Upgrade, ATC) are great. Miranda Doni (TLT, Shield Upgrade, Intel Agent) also did very well with her shield regen.

In 50pts I think the balance heavily tips towards fat turrets that are hard to kill like Chewbacca (LW, Gunner, Falcon Title) or a tabky Decimator, although nothing can save you if you're focus fired by several ships.

Hmm, interesting. I'm curious as to what makes you think tanky big ships will become favourable at 50pts. I'm expecting that people would still be going for fast, 3-agility ships. Maybe Dash or IG from the big ship range. My experience with e.g. the Falcon is that it dies fairly quickly under concentrated fire.

I'm an environment where everyone is flying just one ace, people will gun for big and obvious targets.

Saying that I suppose not everyone will be thinking the same way that I am...

Just to troll people, I would take

YV666

Moralo

Hounds tooth title

Deadmans hand

HLC

try and stay back using the big gun. When he finally does explode, he might get to take someone with him. Then out pops a brand new Z-95, not a great ship, but hopefully by that time everyone else will be damaged.

Or maybe

Whisper

Advanced cloaking device

Veteran instincts

Fire control system

Gunner

Hard to pin down, will recloak before most other pilots get to shoot him. And whether he hits or misses he gets a bonus.

Ha! Given the popularity of Scum in my local meta, I wouldn't be surprised if that or something much like it makes an appearance.

I'm half tempted to show up with a generic pilot and see if people fail to notice it.

I'd likely run a good ol' ship with bombs.

Miranda Doni [29]

Chewbacca [4]

TLT [6]

Conner Net [4]

Conner Net [4]

Extra Munitions [2]

Total: 49

Some good survivability, and with the Conner Net, can play a control game. Now, that often won't allow you to take people out personally, because it'll be a furball, but if everyone knows where that one ship is going next turn...

Well, let's just say that it will paint a big target on the back of that one ship.

I'll back the Vader Idea up...

  • Vader + Title, Homing Missiles, Lone Wolf, Stealth Device, ATC (40 Points)
  • Advantages:
    • 2 actions per turn
    • PS9
    • reroll a blank on all attacks and defenses
    • Agility 4 until the SD is stripped
    • Homing Missiles to really F someone up
  • Weaknesses:
    • Dependent on TL
    • Less maneuverable than some of the other likely Aces (Phantoms and Interceptors)

Alternately, a Rexler build would be pretty strong in this format (I'm thinking better than the more agile ships...)...

  • Rexler + Title TIE/D, Homing Missiles, Ion Cannon, Lone Wolf, Twin Ion Engine (48 Points)
  • Advantages:
    • Great Damage
    • Stupidly useful dial - especially with the Twin Ion Engine
    • reroll a blank on all attacks and defenses
    • Homing Missiles to really F someone up
    • Ion Cannon to focus on making great targets for others to destroy
    • 2 attacks per turn
  • Weaknesses:
    • Limited actions per turn (lol - in this format, 1 action per turn is limited :P)
    • No evade action, dependent on positioning and Ion Cannon board control

I'd want to fly VI Jake so badly but no matter what you put on him, he won't make it close to 50 points. I think a lot of what people posted already are good ideas - regenerators, high agility. While I think that is one good strategy, another is to deter people from coming at you with offensive supremacy. I mean who would want to come into the jaws of a HLC Rexler? SD or Hull upgrade your choice.

TIE Defender: · Rexler Brath (37)

Predator (3)

Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

Stealth Device (3)

This could be fun (trollish) also...

TIE Punisher: · "Deathrain" (26)

Extra Munitions (2)

Flechette Torpedoes (2)

Concussion Missiles (4)

Cluster Missiles (4)

Proximity Mines (3)

Cluster Mines (4)

Advanced Sensors (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Hey guys,

How did the "battle royale" work out?

Were there some special rules involved? Like where you would set up for example.

Also how many people were playing on one table, and which table size was it, ...

We would like to organize something similar, but we would like to avoid making the same mistakes that other people did, so it can be a fun event!

6 players, no ship could deploy within range 3 of any other ship, and that was pretty much the only thing that differed from a standard game. Oh, and players could deploy on any board edge. It ended up being one in each corner and then the other two in the middle of two opposite board edges.

It's good fun, and there were a couple of builds that took me by surprise.

This one proved to be amazingly slippery.

M3-A Interceptor: · Laetin A'Shera (18)

Stealth Device (3)

"Heavy Scyk" Interceptor (2)

Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

The build that won it was

YT-1300: · Chewbacca (42)

· Lone Wolf (2)

Anti Pursuit Laser (2)

· C-3PO (3)

· Millennium Falcon (1)
