What are you playing while you wait?

Recommended Posts

So the title pretty much says it all.  I had a brief exposure to L5R years ago, but didn't have the money to get in and really almost forgot about it until the announcement that FFG had bought it.

I'm really excited about the game, but dreading the two year wait.  I know a lot of you already have established L5R collections - but especially for those of you that don't, what are you playing in the mean time?

What am I playing? Easy question: the RPG of course. My gaming group loves homebrewing, and we have, like, our own custom setting (ten Kami, ten Great Clans, one continent-sprawling Rokugan - it is time for adventure!) and now we are working on a revamped 4th edition ruleset (changing the combat system and some of the flack like Advantages/Disadvantages).

Meanwhile, I try to make my Enlightenment Scorpion Deck work, even if I have to sell my soul to the Dark Gods  :D .

I wanted to take a look at how FFG managed their LCGs, and since they were just restarting Game of Thrones, that seemed a good one to look at. So far, I'm liking it a lot, and it gives me very high hopes for when L5R restarts.

L5R in Twenty Festivals arc. We have Evil Portents newly released, so we can manage to make new decks. My playgroup has slowed the playing days to avoid exhaustion in this new reality. It is a long run until mid 2017, so we eventually will have to shift to another kind of arc. We expect to maintain ourselves fresh enough to catch the LCG.

This. We play 20F with EP+IA Promos, then we'll probably switch to 20F Extended without Coils of Madness. Also Modern which is quite popular here. Still waiting for official TBS or even Onyx pdf.

To be totally honest, Legend of the Five Rings was a backburner game that I returned to from time to time. That being said I have returned to the game that introduced me to gaming in the first place. I run a house ruled version of 1rst Ed AD&D. My players love it, we use a mana pool system for spell casting, and a tick style initiative combat system where initiative is rolled at the start of combat, and actions are purchased as we go. As a player, I have been playing Pathfinder for roleplay, and simply just Hearthstone for a card game while we wait.

I'm currently just playing WarmaHordes while I await the L5R LCG launch. I did play Netrunner for a time, but life has interfered with Netrunner nights. I haven't played since February and am now 5 data packs + 1 deluxe behind :( Ugh... (maybe I should just ditch it...)

I haven't played L5R since, I think, Diamond. I am so eager to return to my Rats though. <3

I play in a Pathfinder group; I run a near-future game using d20 Modern (because some members of the group still have to count on fingers sometimes and earlier edition Shadowruns would just make their heads explode), and I'm planning a Clan Wars Campaign to introduce a group of newbies to the Rokugani setting starting with the Spring Semester.

Couldn't agree more. I'll be using the next 2 years to finish a Master's Degree and focus on my career. There isn't really a "substitute game" for me when it comes to L5R - I either play it or I don't.

Went with Game of Thrones 2.0. Dabbled a bit with Force of Will, but dont think will be serious with that. Was going with doomtown, but the player base died off due to distribution problem....

So yeah, AGOT 2.0 for now.... also spend a lot of time with the young ones on Disney Infinity 3.0 on PS4.... they love the game...

I've.....been playing Magic.

I feel so dirty

Because you are poor now?

I've never really liked the game, or the community for that matter. But I needed something to scratch my competitive itch, and something that wasn't going to be a flash in the pan game of the year (Force of Will, i'm looking at you).

But I'll admit a big part of my dislike is straight up jealousy. Magic is so big. There were more people at my local stores magic release draft tournament than there was at the last L5R world championship. These cards are so popular that a lot of hobby stores use it as their primary source of income.

I've always wanted that for L5R, but its never gonna happen, and it makes me salty as heck!

Hey, at least you're being honest. I've been playing a lot of Magic lately, too, and I guess there's some jealousy there, but there are two big factors working against it:

1) I don't find it's all that expensive to play at the local level. I've honestly spent more in keeping up with Thrones and the awesome boardgames FFG is cranking out with alarming regularity nowadays, than maintaining my Standard deck (I refuse to play Modern).

2) Before I started playing, I heard awful stories about the Magic community, but aside from the occasional jackass player, I've yet to experience anything similar. Perhaps it's because, again, I don't play at a super high level.

I've found I also quite enjoy what they've been doing with the storyline of late. I've always been fond of the color philosophies and how they clash with one another, and it's cool to see that reflected more and more in the official fiction.
