AAAAAND Targeting Astromech sucks.

Recommended Posts

I think the problem is people vastly overestimate the value of R2 Astromech on X-wings. Frankly, Situations where you have only one stress token and need to turn with a T-65 are very rare.

Last time in checked X-wings have white turns, not red. What's keeping them from turning while stressed?

Oh...are you saying you have to clear the stress right away? That's only gonna make you predictable!

It would fit with what I feel Tractor Beam will do. :P.

Actually, the more you mention it, the more I think it'll be "When this ship reveals a white maneuver, it must treat it as a red maneuver." You can leave the greens alone, since they'll be more or less restricted to those anyway if they want to shed stress and perform actions. Which, also, conveniently says "**** PtL Kanan users". ;) edit: I think overtime is getting to me.

I rather like this thematically, as it starts to cement the X-Wing's role as a jouster. A Pinkbot equipped X-Wing will be able to K-Turn without losing the ability to modify its attack. R2 isn't actually quite as useful, as an X-Wing is very rarely stressing itself- PTL is a mediocre option on a ship with only 2 actions on its dial.

I'd have liked to have seen it at 1 point, and/or the text saying something like "at the start of the Combat Phase, if you have a stress token [...]", but that's because I would have liked to have seen it be great on ships which are a bit more points inefficient than they should be. But as it is, this card seems just fine, and is appropriately costed.

So, I guess there's a new article.

Makes sense as they come out Tuesday. I bet Mondays spoiler will be the TIE/FO

Nothing left to spoil of the FO.  Both of the unrevealed pilots are in this article.    The only card we haven't seen in either expansion is the last T-70 X-wing Pilot.

Yeah, it's kinda ass

The problem with the trigger isn't just the sorely limited maneuvers, its that you can't spam reds but once every other round

So for everyone going "Ywings!" Yeah just check out those greens, all 2 of them

Really janky and situational

The FOs are much more generally appreciable (makes sense, need to catch up to Poe)

It's for dem talon rolls, which feels great

As usual it seems, I disagree.

I've used X-Wings a hell of a lot, and Targeting Astromech looks pretty good to me.  The K-turns are the X-Wing's best chance of keeping a bead on hypermobile ships, so getting a free target lock when you K-turn (and pseudo shield upgrade with IA as well) should make the T-65 a much more effective jouster.  Not as good one one one as a Defender, but you can fit four PS4 X-Wings in a single list.

4 x Red Squadron, Targeting Astromech, Integrated Astromech... yeah, I can see myself using that list quite a lot.

Sorry it's not to everyone's taste, but I'm looking forward to it.

edit:  what I'm not looking forward to however is having to buy 4 T70's just so I can run Red Squadron...

it doesn't seem that bad. sorry, but the crowd is overreacting. calm down, guys.

hobbie is amazing with it, wedge+stay+targo-bank-bot also!

is it the 8th world wonder? nope.

has anyone really thought that..?

its an okay card with uses, it's fine, IMHO.

personally, I'm much more exited about the fo fighter pilots. some fun stuff / shenanigans there! :D

anyone else notice that it's the only astromech not given an R_ designation?  Why not R4?  But yeah, it's mostly a T-70 mech, didn't think about Hobbie til now, and as for the Y's, more reds to activate but crap greens to remove.  Just another option for astro users as it should be, I assume any buff for the T-65 will come in a Rogue One expansion as it's set in that time frame.

It IS one of the few upgrades that improve the generic X Wings action economy. Those ships are meant to joust, after all, and now they have a tool to actually make the K Turn round not feel like a complete waste.

Combined with Integrated Astromech, I really like this card on Rookies. It will honestly have more use than R2 Astromech has on those ships.

Also, maybe K Turn into Proton Torpedo isn't HORRIBLE.

Remember, this 'isn't that bad'... but it's the same price as an FCS. Or an R4 Agromech. Or for that matter, R3-A2 and BB-8.

Yes, this thing is going on ships that can't take FCS or Agromechs... but based on the other upgrades out there, for two points you'd hope to see a lot more target locks out of the upgrade. A little like R5-K6, we have yet another 2pt Target Locking astromech... that does objectively less than the other 2pt Target Locking upgrades out there. This is mildly infuriating, especially when hopes for a solid attack-boosting 3pt generic Astromech were because the thing would fill a niche that's currently missing in the upgrade suite.

Really, the biggest reason people are disappointed because they were really hoping for another 'major' astromech pick - either 1pt, or powerful enough to make the bigger investment significant. With Integrated Astromech coming, the 1pt selection of Astromechs is particularly of interest for the 'what can I buy with my 22pt X-wings?' question, and the problem we have is that we have precisely two generics - both of which give more effect on a Y-wing than an X-wing due to the stat profiles of each - and four uniques, two of which are suspected to be virtually incapable of being used with IA to begin with (Because one self-discards anyway, and the other is suspected to lose your EPT when he's discarded, so in terms of price, he's not 1pt, he's EPT+1pt).

Aside from specialist droids on specific pilots (R7 on Tarn, for instance), the only real star player in the astromech suite for X-wings is R3-A2... and he's welded to double-tapping Y-wings these days, so not an option even if he would've been a solid pick elsewhere.

Compare Hobbie with Targeting Astromech to a Delta Squad TIE Defender.

  • 27 points instead of 30
  • 5 skill instead of 2
  • Same weapons, shield, and hull (With Integrated Astromech), with one less agility
  • Way better dial since no red turns
  • Free target lock with a K-turn, basically giving two actions
  • No Barrel Roll sadly

That's pretty sweet.

Why you have to write in the title (!) that the droid sucks?? Your opinion, which most of the readers here obiously disagree

The droid doesn´t suck at all, he is pretty good for jousting lists (and in other cases like Kivian giving him white koiograns, or E-wings with advanced sensors giving two actions during koiogran). Also for sure a good combination with Kanan. That´s it.
