Good soak value to shoot for?

Recommended Posts

I assume there's a point of diminishing returns on this, so where's a good balance point? For the sake of completeness assume a Droid with no Brawn but who's great at modifying things. Should he even try for a competitive soak value? Heavy superior armor, plating cybernetics, shooting for soak talents. Or would the effort probably be better spent in areas he's good at, like fixing things lol

I think over time you will see any spent XP will be worthwhile. I would suggest asking yourself "what do I want this character to be? What do I want to be doing in game sessions?"

If you want to be the tinkering type then go for that,l. If you want to be a tough tank then go for that. Your probably going to have more fun with the character of you focus on 1 general area first, such as fixing and making things. Once you've become proficient to an extent then start to broaden your ability.

There is usually no need to buy an entire talent tree, often it's more enjoyable to buy some of a tree then pick up another Specialisation that broadens your character. The common example is a doctor/marauder mix, but there are so many more.

So just go with what you think is fun, there's no need to "optimise"

In my experience, soak is pretty logarithmic as far as value goes.  I'd really suggest a base soak of 4 is needed to be decent at fighting, 6 is pretty good, 8 is great, 10 is amazing, 10+ is silly.

There are also two separate plateaus for damage.... Pistol damage is usually 8-10 raw damage while rifle damage is usually 12-15.  Applying the above soaks, pistols aren't remotely dangerous to the higher soaks, but rifles, which are needed to do any kind of appreciable damage to the higher soaks, can easily drop the lower soaks.

Vehicle-scale weapons are pretty much off the chart, so I don't include them when considering soak.

Well, I have no intention of being a real combat character, we have an 8 man party, I'm a background guy. I'm just looking to not die in 1 or 2 hits if I'm caught alone or attract agro somehow. (Only have 11 WT) so 5 seems to be a good minimum if shots coming in are around 10. I'm sitting at 3 right now with a Catch Vest base 1, and +1 from being a Droid. (4 vs blasters) so if I just pick up the toughened talents on my way I should be ok I think. (Mechanic, with some combo of rigger, scientist, and/or outlaw tech planned)

Fighting isn't always the only way to end combat, don't try it every time but create things in the environment to use the skills you have "I look for a controll panel to shut some doors and prevent backup getting in" is just a tast of the kind of things you can do.

Oh and being a droid means you rely on skill ranks more than most, if you have a 1 in a Characteristic that just means the most Proficiency (Yellow) dice you can have is 1. Throw 3 or 4 ranks in a skill at that and your rolling a big pool and have a great chance of success.

I have previously played a Slicer droid who I pumped up Deception and Negotiation on to become the party's face (was a Slicer/Entrepreneur that's story was about being a information broker) but I had a Presence of 2!

I wouldnt want to stop the combat players fun though lol, instead I look for ways to buff/debuff people. Like slicing into the bad guys comms and basically blaring a soccer horn into it causing them to waste a movement ditching their comms, knocked one guy on a thin beam off balance with it. Stuff like that. Knowledge checks to tell the party where to hit, computer checks to run scanners and get a heads up letting the combat people ambush. So far I basically hand out blue dice like candy. And I'm happy with that.

Out of combat I fix things, build bridges, plug flooded wrecks, break into vaults, hack more comm signals. I was thinking of adding Slicer but we just got a Spy and I want to wait and see if he goes that route.

But with how the party count ballooned from 3 to 8 overnight the new GM (old one bowed out at that) said we could restat all the characters. So, I spent my entire 180xp at character start on a 1/1/4/2/2/3 stat array. Then I have another 130 to spend after that, I'm thinking of putting nearly all of it into skills and letting talents come as I get a better idea of the character. I know he's an ex repair droid whose owner's shipyard was press ganged by the Republic. After the war it was shut down and he 'escaped' to freedom during the commotion. Now he wants to start his own shipyard and ship design service. It's getting to that that I'm not sure on. The 3 specialization limit is really frustrating lol

With that 3 in Presence you can easily pull off a fast talking mechanic, there are s bunch out there that focus on different areas. Just go with what interests you though. The Rigger would work well too, you definitely don't have to be the pilot to be the Rigger.

Edit: or Scientist to boost knowledge skills.

In an ideal world I'd take Rigger, Scientist, and Entrepreneur ontop of my original Mechanic.

Rigger for my own ship, Scientist for Invention and knowledges, and Entrepreneur for the talking skills and actually starting the shipyard.

Although.. Invention is pretty GM intensive, it might be easier to skip that... it's just blue dice after all, I can probably find role play options to provide those. (taking extra time, having extra good tools/utilities, being assisted by extra engineers, etc). But then I lose out on Tinker too... uuuugh

.... If you're planning on actually fighting semi-regularly (and being shot at whilst doing it), I'd go with a 2 brawn to start... I never recommend a 1 brawn.  It's too important a stat to start from such a weak place.

Don't worry, I don't lol. I spent the last 2 sessions of combat underwater and completely unknown to the enemy group. The soak question is pretty much just to get me by in an emergency.

Wait, there's a limit on the number of specs you can have?

Is there not? o.o I could have imagined reading that, and boy would I be pleased if I did imagine it.

I don't recall ever reading about a limit.  As long as you have the XP to spend to buy the new spec I think you can.  That being said, I'm not an expert on this system, so I could very well be wrong.

If anyone needs me, I'll be at SpecMart~

There was a limit of 3 in the beta I believe, but there is no such limitation now. Shop away.

The limit of three specs was an artifact of the original beta. It was tossed back then. Thereis no limitation now.

So, pretty much exactly what I said, then. :)

My verbose way of saying "This!"

Just remember the increasing cost of each spec...

Yeah. I'm currently invested in a 4 spec character, and currently facing the prospect of putting 50/60 down the pan for career/non-career. I dislike spending points on doing nothing, so at this point I am largely concentrating on talents/rounding skills out (I hadn't really invested in the skill ranks.)

You only want to know about soak in case of an emergency? My friend, if you're already underwater you're already soaked... HAHAHA

/I'll see myself out...
