Multiple investigators - Same location - Combat encounter

Recommended Posts

Hello

My understanding of the rules is : even if 2+ investigators are on the same place, they encounter the monster individually.

So you cannot create a 'group' to go and fight a big monster by adding the Strength values.

Is it correct?

Thanks !!

Thank you :-)

So you cannot do what you can do in Elder sign by bringing multiple investigators to the same place to overcome the difficulties.
Or like you'd do in Call of Cthulhu RPG.

It's a weird 'flavour-design' decision that i do not like to be honest. I can understand it from a game design perspective, but it feels very anti Cthulhu gaming.

Actually by having damage carry over on the monster you can use multiple investigators to overcome things. In Elder Sign the additional investigators help you to focus die but you still need to defeat it (by matching appropriate signs) all in one go.  This can lead to awkward situations where you need to match (overall) five or six dice which can be tough to do in one go.  Now consider a monster in Eldritch Horror which has high toughness (for example 5).  It may be well nigh impossible to get five successes in one row, but any you do get makes it easier the next time (remember that each investigator only does one combat round per monster per turn).  If you have one investigator it may take several turns to complete the job; if you have more than one then things can get done faster.

The investigators that are helping don't even have to be high strength and/or equipped with weapons - remember that in Eldritch Horror you never roll less than one die when resolving a test. So an investigator with Strength 1 can go up with an epic monster that has a "Strength - 3" modifier can still do one damage if they are lucky.

This carries over to the strategy for the game. Consider the case where an really tough monster is blocking a gate.  You may have a strong character who's good at killing monsters but not so good for closing gates and another that is good for closing gates, but not a killer.  Give the first player token to the monster killer and move them to gate + monster location. Also move the other player there. If the monster killer doesn't finish the monster, the gate closer may finish them off (and then get to take another encounter, e.g. close the gate).   If they fail, then the next turn the monster killer can hopefully finish off the monster (as it will have damage carrying over).
