If I blank out on attack and my opponent removes his ship anyways, am I cheating for keeping my mouth shut?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have an email address from someone on the design team to get a definitive answer? I asked a well regarded top player in my area and he doesn't think it's cheating. I'm not sure either way.

What answer are you expecting? It's obviously against the rules, and you've known that since it happened. (Check the subsection on "Compare Results": you're supposed to pair off and cancel dice results.)

The question is whether you were responsible for notifying your opponent of the fact that he was mistaken about your roll. And I don't see how the answer can come out as "no": it wasn't an error in judgment or a missed opportunity, but rather an error of fact. You misled your opponent about the game state in order to gain an advantage. How can you think that's anything but cheating?

I'm half expecting an answer like I received from the well regarded top player in my area.

Because I did not mislead my opponent, he misled himself.

He's the one that originally did the thing that was not allowed.

Your opponent couldn't see the dice clearly, and misread them as a result. You knew he misread them. As digitalbusker says, it's pretty clearly a shared responsibility to make sure the game state is updated correctly based on dice results, and especially when, say, there's something like a dice tray in the mix.

You were in the wrong.

Opponent does something wrong.

I notice that he did something wrong but say nothing.

It's not clear enough for me. My opponent broke the rules just as much if not more than I did with my inaction.

I'm kind of used to everyone being against me with my phantom hatred pre-nerf, so that's really irrelevant to me. Basically I see everyone that's against me in this thread as one post, and the top player in my area as another. 1 - 1.

You're cute. People aren't "against you" because you didn't like the Phantom. People reacted negatively them because you posted negatively and monotonously on a single topic. People continue to react negatively to you because you write posts that reflect badly on you, then argue with people who point that out.

People react negatively to you because you continually showcase attitudes and behaviors that are universally considered at best the mark of a jerk and at worse the epitome of a cancerous player of this game.

I have no idea what you thought about the Phantom, but I do think of you as a cheater because of your posts on the board.

You've made yourself out to be a joke with these threads of yours.

It's everybody else's fault but your own, isn't it? You say your opponent cheated first by removing the ship and altering the game state.

This wasn't cheating by any stretch. He was under the impression that the ship was destroyed. He didn't break the rules with the intention of doing so. But you're still trying to blame him for his mistake AND your deliberate inaction to correct it.

The blame here rests squarely on one player only, the one that cheated with intent. But, of course, you're never going to admit that you were wholly the one at fault, are you? And seeking redemption from some "well regarded" player isn't going to prove anything to the contrary.

"I've done nothing wrong, and it's everyone else fault.  Besides, you have all always hated me because I say unpopular things, even though they are true."

@OP:  With that sort of attitude, have you ever considered a career in politics?

Trump already has that slot filled for so long as he can milk someone else's 15 minutes of fame...

Man, the HATE in this thread is strong! Look guys, I think it was a poor decision, too, but let's not stone the guy. Yes, ParaGoombaSlayer seems like a difficult person to play against at times, given some of his stances in past posts. But does it have to be that way? Will it always be that way? What good does it do anyone to sling mud at him? Is that going to show him how to not be a jerk? Is that going to be an example of the sportsmanship we want to see in all X-Wing players? Sure, state your opinion on whether he was or was not cheating, but I see no reason for name-calling. You guys don't even know the man!

And if he is every bit as bad as some of you assume, is he even worth your time?

For my part, I believe ParaGoombaSlayer will not always play like this. I have hope that his asking this question is a sign that he does care where the line is. "There is good in him ... I can feel the conflict." Vader redeemed himself. PGS can do the same.

I feel this falls under Unsportsmanlike Conduct in the Tournament Rules.

"Players are expected to behave in a mature and considerate manner, and to play within the rules and not abuse them."

Both you and your opponent did not play within the rules. His was accidental, yours was intentional. If you kept in to yourself, no one would know. But, you told your opponent afterwards. He could've went to the TO with this information and then TO would have to decide what to do with this. Could be nothing, but it could get you kicked out of the tournament too.

You knew it was a mistake and made no effort to correct it. This is kind of like keeping the extra money when a cashier makes an error and hands you a 10 dollar bill back instead of a 5.

Basically, easy way to sum this thread up.  I really not sure if the OP is out just to troll the forums and stir stuff up for his amusement or really that socially challenged as others have observed.  I hope the former.

It's not clear enough for me. My opponent broke the rules just as much if not more than I did with my inaction.

Yes, he did break the rules - nothing allowed him to remove the ship.  You're exactly right.

He accidentally broke the rules.  You knowingly broke the rules.

One of those is a mistake, the other is cheating.

And the mistake was a preventable mistake at that. By simply saying "I got nothing" after the attack roll would've made the opponent leave his ship there.

As I had mentioned before this was posted you could have called a TO to 'correct' your opponent's mistake and/or hand out any discipline that was needed.  What happens with his error was NOT your call which is why everyone is coming down on your action or lack thereof.

To put it into different terms what he did would likely have draw some type of penalty in many sports but how you responded to it would call for your ejection.

Pretty easily the most cut and dry cheating situation I have seen asked recently.

If I was TO and you/your opponent/someone had informed me I would have immediately Disqualified you and asked you to leave. This was a serious offense.  Up there with intentionally tampering with a damage deck or rolling weighted dice. You intentionally and deliberately allowed the game state to change so that you could win.

Your opponent misread what had happened and you let him so you would win.  It is on BOTH players to maintain game state.  Yes, that means you would have had to be a decent human being and say something.

The whole "well but the game was really fun after that" bit is just you trying to make yourself feel better about it.

Had he removed his ship and then you said "Whoa hold on I missed, he's still alive", I would have happily come over and helped resolve how to proceed with replacing the ship on the board to the best of the player's ability.  Yes, this might have meant you had some level of say over where it was because you noticed the error and tried to resolve it.

Man, just move on and forget it, that's just a game ^^

I say burn the witch ParaGommba Slayer, the silly twit.  I once saw the witch turn me into a newt and then there's the wart.  I of course got better but there is still the wart.  Also, if we weigh the witch and they are lighter than a very small rock or a duck then we buuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn said witch.   ;)

Shame on you PGS, you did wrong and your opponent did wrong and added together, they don't make a right.  Now let's all hug, make up and get along . . . or not  :D

Yeah, you should have spoke up, if you want to play against them again.  Really, you should have said something.  I have been the frustrated person before and did the exact same thing.  Only my opponent told me its still on the board and explained.  It ended up being a less stressful game and a very good one too.
