Parry, melee, sunder and lightsabers

Recommended Posts

So, in short: how do you handle parrying with a melee weapon against a lightsaber attack?

Unless it's made of lightsaber-resistant material, the saber just cuts it in half.

Kind of like if you were parrying a katana with a stick you found in the woods.

Mechanically or narratively?

Mechanically, if the person with the melee weapon is using the Parry talent vs. a lightsaber attack, then the melee weapon is fine.  After all, parrying a strike doesn't have to mean that you literally stop the incoming blade with your own weapon.  While most swashbuckler/pirate movies make heavy use of Flynning, if you watch some of the older era films (where the actors actually were trained fencers) you can see various ways to counter an opponent's attack that would fall under the heading of the Parry talent.

Narratively, it's just assumed that you're trying to do the best you can to keep that maniac with the lightsaber from slicing up both you and your humble-in-comparison melee weapon.  If the attacker hits with Advantage and chooses to use Sunder, not a whole lot you can do unless your weapon is made of a lightsaber-resistant material such as cortosis weave or phrik alloy (i.e. has the Cortosis quality).
