TasteTheRainbow 8,726 Posted May 21, 2017 No definitive answers today. Good news if you're hoping for no natural answers! Wavelength drop was uniform across the spectrum. If it was dust/ice we'd expect a dip in some spectra before.

Robin Graves 6,054 Posted May 22, 2017 Star's light dimming... Their weapon must be almost fully charged now... 1 TasteTheRainbow reacted to this
TasteTheRainbow 8,726 Posted May 23, 2017 Some things ruled out! Including probably a Dyson sphere. http://some-science.blogspot.de/2017/05/dip-in-may-brings-ideas-away.html?m=
Robin Graves 6,054 Posted May 24, 2017 It's still a slightly possible according to the article. I doubt any advanced race would build a Dyson sphere. It's just so costly in materials and over-engineerd. Just orbit the star with a ring of energy abosorbers (solar panels or similar tech) rather than build a whole sphere around it. "Black hole, Hypothesis gone!" I wan't that on a T-shirt. "Something we have not thought about." (facepalm) yeah that answer solves everything! What caused the big bang? Something we have not thought about. I wonder if they have tought about Ponies THE DIPS ARE REAL 2 TasteTheRainbow and Jo Jo reacted to this
TasteTheRainbow 8,726 Posted May 25, 2017 I should say THIS dip isn't an opaque object. Hopefully we'll catch one of the big 15-20% dips and get that spectra.
WarriorPoet 352 Posted June 11, 2017 Finally* starting to read Cibola Burn, the artifacts on Ilus remind me of this... Any updates? *School's out. Got the book as a very belated Christmas present from mother-in-law on the night before what turned out to be our second child's birthday. Meant I got a good chunk of reading done in hospital while my wife slept and I was too uncomfortable on the 1.5'-wide "couch" to do so. 2 rubberduck and TasteTheRainbow reacted to this

Congratulations on the birth of your child! 1 WarriorPoet reacted to this
TasteTheRainbow 8,726 Posted June 11, 2017 Current state of research on this particular spectra: That looks like dust between us and the star, but more dust than we understand could possibly exist around this particular star. Based on orbital period this "dust band" is 2 times larger than the star. Like thousands of our asteroid belts smashed into the same amount of space. important point: This was a small dip of 1-3%, Not one of the huge 15-20% dips that caught everyone's attention. my cheeky explanation: Yea you kick up a lot of dust building megastructures. ? 2 rubberduck and WarriorPoet reacted to this
TasteTheRainbow 8,726 Posted June 11, 2017 Oh and book 5 of The Expanse is the best in the series. I loved Cibola Burn, but a lot of people think it's the weakest of the series. 2 WarriorPoet and rubberduck reacted to this

I'd have to say, Amos is definitely my favorite character in the series. 1 TasteTheRainbow reacted to this
