L5r Board game????

Recommended Posts

Rokugan 2K.

Yes! I always loved that story!

I think the most exciting aspect of FF acquiring L5R is all the things they could do without outside the LCG. Maybe even video game licenses like GW is doing with 40k.

FFG loves making games with their IPs so I'd expect some sort of board game, if not multiples on different scales. Plus all those expansions that FFG pumps out, but that's not a bad thing.

The last board game I can think of with L5R was Ninja: Legend of the Scorpion.

There are sets that can be already considered as board games.

War of Honor, Heart of Darkness.

We even have tiles.

Eh, I think design assumptions are different enough in board games that the term doesn't effectively describe what comes in the various L5R boxes. But it's a bit fuzzy, I'll grant.

By certain arguments, you could call all of FFG's LCG's "board games." Cthulhu even came with a literal board. But I wouldn't call it common usage, at least in English. I'm not so familiar with the line in other languages, so maybe it's just a linguistic difference. :)

I played both the naga siege and the clan war games, which are sort of like baord games in their own right, and it was fun, but I'm not sure I would play it over and over.

I would however LOVE to see an L5R board game made by FFG big time. So much potential in it.

I kinda hope whatever they start with isn't crazy with relentless releases like Imperial Assault, but...well, I'm not holding my breath. :P

A big old conquest game in the vein of their Game of Throne board game would be pretty great. I wouldn't want a straight reskin, but something in that spirit.

Was thinking along the same lines. Something that maybe is a bit of a throwback to the old l5r strategy format with the map etc.

Definitely scope to do something like Descent too, a nice rpg style one.

The thing I would love to see, but would be entirely surprised if it was made, is a minatures game like the old clan wars one. Doubt it is really feasible these days though! :)

Wouldn't be surprised to see a take on L5R style Battle Lore. Not sure if that quite scratches the same itch for you though.

There was the Reese-designed art of war L5R board game that got fully developed by AEG but was not made because they couldn't get the production costs down to an affordable level. It's possible that FFG would have the size and experience to figure out a way to make that work.

I ran a strategic L5R tournament once, and it was amazingly fun - and chaotic.  It wasn't something that I would have signed up to do again, but it is definitely one of my favorite memories of that period of Gold.

It wouldn't surprise me at all. First, 3D printing makes designing and producing miniature models a lot easier and at a much better cost. Second, FFG has experiences with miniature wargaming in the form of X-Wing, so producing something similar wouldn't be that hard. Of course, that is probably at the bottom of FFG to do list in term of this particular IP, but I, for one, would love to see such a product.

I'd love to see an L5R minis game.  It's disappointing to me that all three of the competitive minis games from FFG are Star Wars themed which only has two factions plus occasionally a tacked-on "bounty hunters" sort of 3rd.  A proper minis game includes enough factions that everyone can find one to call home.

And yes, an L5R version of Battlelore would be easy, I've been thinking of that too.  Whether it's based on that, some sort of skirmish rules, or whatever, do SOMETHING - it's a fantastic theme for a minis game and shouldn't be wasted.

I have always loved Twilight Imperium, and a Clan War Era or Race for the Throne game on that sort of scale--with each clan fighting to wipe out the others and become Emperor would be really nice.

Well . . . on TI scale . . . LONG, but . . . really nice.

As an owner of Twilight Imperium and an old hand at multiplayer L5R and even Strategic L5R, I'll just opine that "wipe out the others," usually makes for a miserable slog of a game. You need something slightly lighter-weight than Twilight Imperium that's still objective-based rather than extermination-based.

Actually, my group loves TI--yes, you have to plan for an extended play period if you want to run the whole game at once, but that's part of the fun.  We've done both marathon day runs and set it where we ran three turns a week while playing other games.

I am not sure that there is really a market for more games that take an entire day to play. Especially if the objective actually was to wipe out everyone else.

Realistically I think you're looking at something like Forbidden Stars as the high end in a variety of ways for what FFG would do at this juncture, including play length and price point. It also falls into the category of being very combat-focused but not about just wiping players out.

There are also a whole mess of other game styles that could be done in L5R. You could have a euro style game about court politics. Or you could have a social back-stabby sort of game about court politics. You could have a mystery-themed game about magistrates solving a crime or unraveling a conspiracy (multi-clan group of magistrates is still probably the most basic L5R RPG group). Or you could have an adventure card game style game about that same group of magistrates. You could have a combat focused game about the clan wars or clan conflicts generally. You could have a euro style game where the clans accumulate political, economic, military, etc. influence in order to take the vacant throne or secure the favor of the Emperor.

But I'm not sure how much the process works like that. Will they have some sort of brainstorming session about what sort of games they might make with the L5R brand? At some point, I would imagine (maybe it's already happened, but I'm not sure how serious any of that would be until the LCG is nailed down). But it might as easily be that they have a cool mechanical thing they want to do, and then decide which if their IPs (owned or licensed) would work best for it. And it matters what sort of games they focus on. FFG does a lot of card games and epic games, but they aren't exactly known for drier crunchy euros.
