My idiotic attempt to play squadrons at an upcoming tourny

Recommended Posts

I don't think that Gallant heaven is as worth as it seems in this build, i would drop that to boost one of your X-Wing squads to Wedge, he's great leave him back a bit then he can cut through the interceptors that usually do so much damage to other x wing squads

So I went for the list in the OP

List

AFII B

Garm Bel Iblis

Gallant Haven

Defensive Liason

Enhanced Armaments

Advanced Projectors

Gunnery Team

Neb Escort

Yavaris

Antilles

x2 b wings

x2 x wings

x3 y wings

Tycho

Obectives

Precision Strike

Hyperspace Assault

Superior Positions

I took second with a 7-3 , 10-0, 1-9 score in my three games.

Game 1  7-3

I was second player and he chose my Precision Strike. His fleet consisted of 2 Vics and 2 glads all with ACMs and Screed. Thanks to Superior Positions I was able to place far away from him and slow crawled up the map. On of his glads took a VERY wide arce around the map and never actually made an attack. I was able to drop Screed's Vic first which made the rest of the game much easier. I lost Yavaris in round 4 but not after it had doen all of the damage to the vic with the help of Bs of coarse.

Game 2 10-0

This was against two Vics and a Demolisher with Screed. I was first in this game but he had superior positions and I chose that which is the objective i was hoping for all day. This game everything went my way from positioning to dice. My Bs were consistently dealing 3 damage on to the rear and I ended with 435 points. Dropping his fleet and gaining an extra 135 off of Superior Positions. Yavaris again was the shining star of this game.

Game 3 9-1

This game was again Superior Positions with me as the second player. My opponents fleet was 2 Vics a Glad and Motti. He also had a rhymer ball, these were the only squadron's I faced all day. I showed him that my 16 point tycho can shut down his 30 something point Rhymer ball all game so that was fun. This game really boiled down to turn 3 were I miss calculated and had placed my Bs just outside of yavaris' range therefore I was not able to drop his glad survived the attack with 1 hull and pummeled my Yavaris. I eventually dropped the Glad and did some work on one of the Vics but he destroyed my AFII and the game ended and I was faced with the harsh reality of the scoring with a squadron heavy list. It was a good game and he got in my face quick which was smart.

The thing I took away from my fleet is that gallant haven in the current meta, of people to scared to use squadrons, is not worth it. I think in the future that will change but right now its just not worth the points int he tournament scene. It should also be pointed out that this was the first time I had not played against my friend in my basement. So overall I was happy with the list and my play. Looking forward to Sullust.

The thing I took away from he tourny was that with so many people scared to use squadrons it really lets bombers play in the sprinklers. With no squadrons to worry about I was able to freely place my Bs and Ys where I needed to. Which in my opinion is what a lot of people are missing with them is placement. Don't' over shoot your ships keep them with the Bs and you'll be fine.

Yeah, that's not a bad idea. I often say that I will never run a Rebel fleet without a pair of A-wings.

Though I disagree that X-wings are useless - they are a great follow-up after an A-wing or two have locked down the key part of the enemy force. And though they're easy prey to Interceptors, they will chew through basically anything else (especially B-wings and Y-wings in mirror matches) with ease AND are still quite effective vs ships.

Agreed. There is a reason those little buggers cost 13 points!

Not sure why so many put Superior Positions into their builds when they have very little chance of scoring more than a few tokens vs. the chance to get royally screwed vs. bomber builds.

yeah i was pleasantly surprised. My best guess was that it is kind of the "easy one" that you throw in and don't think about. Until yavaris is netting me 90 points in a turn!

It almost makes sense, to be sure your VSDs won't be left high and dry... but I agree with you, it's only worth the risk if you have some bombers. Otherwise, Dangerous Territory or perhaps Intel Sweep.
