[prequels] The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

This is a thing I've been working on for (yikes!) almost three months now, despite which it's really not anywhere near complete, but I thought I'd attempt to get some design feedback here.

It's not designed to be balanced vs. OT+ ships, if parts of it are that's nothing but a happy accident. Hopefully I've managed to make it more or less balanced vs. itself, but hey, minimal testing.

I was originally going to have a semi-complex reload/delayed fire system for missiles and torpedoes, but it proved a bit clunky. There might still be references to it on some cards that haven't been updated, but there's only one real rules tweak, which I adopted to smooth out some elements and hopefully sidestep an OT+ pitfall.

"When attacking with a TURRET PRIMARY WEAPON or an AUXILIARY FIRING ARC, if you are targeting a ship outside your primary firing arc, reduce your Primary Weapon Value by 1."

 

This has a useful effect on several ships. It provides the proper rear-arc firepower for the ARC-170, prevents the Havoc from being a nasty PWT while running away, and makes the Firespray's rear arc less broken. Doesn't really affect the Nantex one way or the other since the thing is a dervish.

 

Anyway, enough preamble that hasn't actually defined the scope of this project: this is an unfinished but fairly comprehensive set of ships, pilots, and upgrades for ships from the ~30-20BBY era.

Core up, sort of (no upgrades yet, just ships/pilots).

 

Currently I have final or placeholder abilities for every unique pilot, but upgrades are slower (it's mostly a matter of deciding which EPT goes where since the ship-specific stuff is easier).

 

There'll be new EPTs but this is built as a thematic standalone (StandaClone Complex?), so there's also a lot of existing cards with different art and sometimes wording tweaks.

 

It's formatted like a physical expansion set, but only 1 of each card across the entire thing (other than a few dupe pilots for the core/aces.

Why is the Aethersprite only 3 health, and the Belbullab as high as 8? And I'm curious why you chose not to give either a target lock.

Also, I've always thought that if Vulture Droids were in the game, they should get some IG-2000-lite type of shared abilities. Since you've given them each only 2 health, that seems like a worthwhile benefit.

Anyway.....now I want this!!

Basically, the Aethersprite, Actis, and V-Wing all sort of lead into the TIE Fighter, and I wanted to reflect that a bit in the design.

 

The Aethersprite is sort of a wierd sub-squint hybrid, so no TL (can get it through a mech I haven't designed yet, though)

 

The Belbullab I've been treating as a tank, and it has oddly low attack (/supposed/ to be on par with the V-Wing, but it didn't feel right at ATK2 so I have the V-Wing at ATK2+TL and the Belbullab at ATK3-TL)

 

There's a mod in the non-core Vulture Expansion that does something interesting (for all Droid ships!).

Whoa dude! Massive effort!

 

If you are still figuring out any pilot abilities, here is one I like. 

 

A the start of the combat phase, choose one friendly ship in range 1-3 with lower pilot skill than yours. The chosen ship may attack twice this round. You may not perform any attacks this round.

I actually do have (tentatively) all pilot abilities, but I'm totally up for swapping better/more thematic ideas in. Will keep that one in mind, it's actually sort of similar to one I had (though different main effect).

Why does R3 Astromech have a die roll instead of just dolling out the token?

 

Is padme's ability still really weird?

Astromechs tend to have a quite a few dice-roll abilities, but most of them are annoying. I wanted to make one that could prevent annoyance for once.

 

Padme's ability might still have the old wording, the doc and my .seproject are a little out of sync and all the actual cards come from the latter.

 

The Naboo core set (you will go through...the CORE!) has ships that are slightly fewer points than the 'OT' core set. With TFA core set having the new tie and x being more points than the original, we have a pattern to satisfy my OCD.

Bongo Expansion Pack in 2045, you heard it here first. (I kind of wanted to do the HMP but couldn't find another reppie small ship for parity, though tbf they have an aces pack and seppies don't)

 

(might have Huge ships down the line, but the Strange Eons module can't do cards for 'em yet so I haven't really thought muchabout it)

If I may, I wish to criticize the Belbullab-22 Starfighter. In no other source but Battlefront have I ever seen it carrying bombs, or treated as having a particularly beefy hull. Indeed, it is a quick, powerful starfighter.

I'd reduce the hull, add a shield, and up the agility a bit. Remove the bomb, and the firepower is right. Never heard of that thing carrying ordnance of any kind.

Other'n that, **** dude. You're doing great work here.

I'm implementing a few things from Battlefront (V-Wing title also).

Problem with the Belbullab is it's not really all that interesting in terms of upgrade slots, and it has a lot of similarities with the Porax-38, so differentiating the two has been a pain.

Could definitely take some dial work.

That's true/ The Porax-38 is ridiculously similar. As for the V-Wing. Truth be told, it's basically an ETA-2 Actis, except not.

Shoot, perhaps even better. Now, in regards to the JSF, I think the Delta-7 should be given 2 firepower. Yeah it's got four guns, and if you count the toyetic "Attack Mode" then it just gets friggin' stupid and crazy.

But, the Eta-2 not only has mammoth sized guns, it's got smaller ones flanking those. I think that's the one that should have 3 Firepower.

For once, I actually feel like I would want to see the N-1 in the game.

I mean, if we are including EP VII ships and EU ships from 30 years in the future ( and sub-factions no less) then I really don't feel that there is any remaining leg for the, "don't include Prequel ships!!!" to stand on.

I don't enjoy much from the PT, but I know that some people really like the ships. Considering how much I don't like the K-wing or the T-70, but my friends do, I realize that complaining about something that gives someone else joy is petty and stupid.

Count me as a convert, let's get some prequel ships.

Porax will actually get a crew slot off the Xanadu Blood title, so that should help.

 

The Eta-2 has an absurdly low cyclic rate, though. Keep in mind it has a cannon slot and can run HLC.
