Star Wars Risk : Black Series Edition

Recommended Posts

So with Force Friday there were some new games.   A Star Wars Risk was among them.   But there are pictures of a Black Series version of the game that costs ten extra dollars, has a better box, and comes with a star destroyer and millenium falcon miniatures.  Problem is, it doesn't appear to exist in ANY stores.   Anyone heard of it?   Seen it anywhere?

I'm just interested in HOW it plays. The board fir this new one looks NOTHING like a risk board. That older one, while it no doubt had a couple bells and whistles to make it more thematic, it is obviously still a game of risk. You can see the 6 "continents" divided I to spaces, the lines connecting them.... It's Risk.

This new game looks completely different. It supposably has 3 battles going on simultaneously but one of those just looks like a linear progression. I'm just curious how this qualifies as a Risk game.

I am also hoping that I can use the board as a means to track progress in some sort of armada/x-wing/imperial assault battle of endor campaign.

I hadn't seen the Black Series one. The Toys'R'Us one was definitely not that version. I really think this game looks intriguing. I want to see how it plays, too.

And I can totally vouch for the Original Trilogy edition of Risk. It has a lot of great things about it. The best is that the country cards have been replaced with faction-specific decks. Each card has a game effect like an event card in your standard card game. Those cards can swing battles and give you an upper hand. Each card also has picture of a ship on it. You can spend 3 cards to gain reinforcements like in traditional Risk, only instead of soldier, cavalry, and cannon, you have fighter, bomber, capital ship. Get one of each and you can recruit lots of units. But wait! there's more! Because instead of using the ships to buy units, you can use them to buy ships! A fighter lets you reroll a 1 on an attack die if the fighter is present in the battle. A Bomber lets you add 1 to your highest die roll. A Capital ship lets you roll a d8 instead of a d6. I haven't even mentioned the victory conditions. The Rebels are assaulting Imperial Bases looking for Emperor Palpatine. If they conquer a system with a base token and the Emperor is on that token, the Rebels win. The Imperials have to destroy all the Rebels. Meanwhile, the Hutts have to spread their syndicate across sectors to control 10 different resource planets. Resource planets are planets with a green border that are dispersed throughout the galaxy. There are a lot of fun choices and the game really fits the Star Wars theme.

I highly doubt the new game will even scratch the surface of what the Original Trilogy Edition has to offer, but parts of it remind me of Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit, which I've never had the privilege of playing but would like to try out someday. I mean, it looks like there is a ground mission that has an effect on the space battle, which is pretty cool.

Queen's gambit, yes. I was thinking that to. It would be cool yeah. Do you deploy more ground forces so teh sholed will be downed quicker and risk your ships getting overwhelmed or vice versa? I'll definatly check it out. Meanwhile I'll give the OT a try. My LGS just confirmed they still have a copy in stock.Wahoo!

That's awesome! I hope you enjoy it. Oh, I forgot to mention that the Death Star can blow up planets, wiping out all units there. An asteroid token is placed on that system and troops can no longer move through the system (unless the Rebels have a specific card).

At the end of the day, it still is a Risk game. It's got the same basic mechanics and all. But it's probably the best Star Wars table-top game that wasn't intended for the hobby-game market.

The guy who runs our SW RPG has the game and was showing off the minis, They actually look pretty good and the game comes with a tom of them. Might be good supplements for other games like Armada. If he still lived locally and we were using minis in conjunction with the RPG then we would already have started using them in fleet combat

Tom Vasel's review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ClKncdZpIk

It isn't RISK at all! It's Queen's Gambit meets ROTJ.

Battle for Endor without A-wings ;) he he, no more kamikaze attacks on the Executor! :D

Thanks for the link! Great find!

As I started watching I thought, "Oh no. I'm going to need this, aren't I?" But by the end of the review I was pretty lukewarm about the whole thing. Yeah, it's interesting. Ten or fifteen years ago I would have been all over this. But now I'd rather buy more X-wing ships than get this game. It looks like a nice diversion, but I can't imagine it ever seeing play time. I think I'd rather play The Queen's Gambit.

I agree. Queens gambit had a bunch of cool mini's and an awesome board.

But this thing... I was really dissapointed how UGLY the ground battle on Endor looked. Everything else is ok i guess... but those grey/white +1 tokens (i guess are) representing storm troopers. No. Just no.

From the pictures i found online it looks like the Black Version does have minis for the Stormtroopers as well as the space area Executor, Falcon and Death Star.

No minis for the remaining outside track markers tho.

After watching Tom Vassel and the Drive Thru Review videos, I'm really left scratching my head at the 'Risk' title. Sure, it's a recognizable brand,  but it's also very polarized. For every 2 people I meet that love Risk, there's a third who has sworn never to play another Risk game again. I can't help but wonder if they shot themselves in the foot wit the name. I think "Star Wars: The Battle over Endor" would have been a much more appropriate title and probably would have got more people looking at the box instead of passing it up since they already have 1 or 2 versions of Star Wars Risk.

Wait, wait, wait.

Queen's Gambit got an OT overhaul? Why the heck isn't this bigger news. Now I gotta find it.

I'd wait for the Black Series edition that comes with better components. Sure, it's twice as expensive, but aesthetics matter. (Why else would I be playing X-Wing? :P )

Really wish this thread had been posted 2 days earlier. I would have waited.

Not Black Series, but I finally got a chance to open and play the Star Wars Risk my wife bought a month ago. It was way better than my already-high expectations. You have to have a longterm strategy with built-in backup ideas depending on what the opponent does. And the sideboard fights keep the pace really quick. We played 4-player and it was still over in 30 or so minutes.

Looks like the exact same board but you get:

  • DS2, Falcon, and SSD minis
  • Stormtrooper minis
  • Fancier Dice
  • Snazzy Box

I just purchased the dumb ol' donkey version on (small business) Saturday from my FLGS and I won't feel too bad about missing this version.

I am with ForgottenLore though.  Someone MUST come up with a way to run a narrative event with Imperial Assault representing the bunker assault, Armada for the fleet battle and X-wing for fighter combat.  What could we use for the Vader vs Luke though?
