300 points just isn't enough for Epic

I just can't do it.   I can't build an Epic squad that works with only 300 points to spend.  It certainly doesn't FEEL epic anyhow, because a loaded raider takes up almost half of my points.   So then I'm left with about 160 points...  which after adding a Decimator, (Because it looks beautiful next to a Raider)and Palpy riding shotgun on it, I have very close to the original 100 points for a standard list. 

 

  What I want to have, is several TIE fighters, 2 Interceptors, at least 1 Punisher, accompanied by a few baby Bombers too!   Basically I want 1 or 2 of everything I own, on the darned matt!   The only way I can get CLOSE to doing that with 300 points is go with no upgrades and leave my Raider on the bookshelf...   And who wants to play Epic without Huge Ships?!?!? 

 

  500 points should be the new, "Super Epic".    The gorgeous, thematic battle that you just want to take pictures of!   

 

Crabs is right... which is why while I absolutely adore our wonderful young warriors at FFG, they loose all power as soon as I set up one of my big-bad-boss-games.

 

I am gonna do what I wanna do with my wonderful toys.

For us, at home, 250 seems to be the sweet spot

- 1 reasonably equipped huge ship goes for about 150 pts

- aprox. 100 pts for a standard list

My son and I have found it very close to the standard 100 pts game

Epic should be just that, EPIC!!! Hence, build a good list with at least one Huge ship and then decide on the points! Some guys are too worried about the so called "rules!" There is no organized play for Epic, so have fun and think outside the box.

When I think of EPIC I think of multiple HUGE ships and a BUNCH of SQUADRONS of small fighters swarming around them! If that means I have a Raider, two Gozantis and 25 smalls, GREAT! Ill figure the points after the I build the list. If it comes out to 1,000 pts per side, so be it! Hopefully I can get some help pushing all these wonderful ships around my 5'x9' table!!!

Notably, 400 points alone is enough to do twelve phantoms and eight TIE fighters, which is scary as all hell. But yeah, it felt right ship count wise when there was one huge, a few large, and like a dozen or so small guys on one table. Now it doesn't feel like enough stuff is going on. I'd be down with more points and some other limiting mechanics to keep it sensible

Just starting out with Epic but 250 pts seems about right if you want the huge ships to have an impact. I think when I get a bit more experience with the huge ships we may be able to bump this up closer to 300.

400 points with a minimum of 3 epic points spent per side on a 6'x4' table is the way to go with epic games. They are always a blast.

I would go for 2. You would have at least one huge ship as people can have the option to take a transport. might even get some good support transport builds with it.

500 points would just get stupid.  Someone will decide to run this list:

Binayre Pirates x12

Cartel Spacer x12

Syndicate Thug x10

That's 492 points, leaving you with 8 points to put upgrades on something.  34 ships is just completely obnoxious.  The game will turn into a complete traffic jam, and hours will be spent trying to move everything.  It wouldn't be fun.

 

I wish someone WOULD fly that many ships against me.   My new Wave 7 ships and upgrades have about 14 proton bombs that we'd like to introduce to them.

The problem with "2" epic points is that you can just take a naked transport at 30 points, 370pts of normal ships, and then just try to run over stuff with the transport.  

 

By forcing 3 points, if you want to maximize your squadrons, you have to take 60 points of epic via 2 naked transports, but then you're essentially playing 340 vs. 400.  Which is probably about where it should be to be fair (because epic ships are quite a bit over costed).

 

Or, you're forcing at least one Corvette (or Raider). This can be paired with a Transport/Gozanti if the player so decides for the 5pt maximum.  Or it can be fielded by itself.  Or two Transports/Gozanti's loaded out.  Either way, you're basically requiring an actual epic match.

Also the Gozanti Cruiser is coming up and that will be around 2 epic points, while we are at it what about the Scum and Villainy ships? The only huge ship that faction has is well nothing but unofficially using a house rule kit you could give them the transport. (speaking of which I got to go finish the last crew upgrade so part 3 will be complete and the kit will be ready to go.)

Did you Kit the Raider with Vader? I am a big proponenant of the Varader build along with the Corellian Captain as the best anti star fighter huge ship builds.

I did not. I thought about it, but I decided against it for a Rebel captive.

This list never fails. Keep your upgrades cheap and you can field a serious escort. Imps don't have the 3 attack dice but I've flown a similar raider set up but with shuttles and advanced. Doesn't quite compete with biggs and daggers tho.

Don't write off the humble GR-75 - it has a plethora of nasty tricks up its sleeve for not a lot of points.

 

I'd be tempted to run one completely naked except for an EM Emitter and use it as a meatshield for a bunch of TLT Y-wings / HKWs 

Heck there's more than enough points to do this twice  :)

300 points with epic scale ships on both sides is perfect for a shorter game - shorter than armada.  However, it already shows that it has some pretty big imbalances depending on who has what - 4 IG-88s is prettty mean...

The nice thing, is we can just decide to run 1000 point games :D

Going to be doing a 400 Pt game in couple hours tonight

Rebel vs imperial

Was a good game but I'd say I lost.

Has to call it at 2:30am.

I had the Raider,6 ties,2 advanced,fel,Krassis,bounty hunter,shuttle

Waa against a Tantive.4bwing,2ywing,Coran,Etahn,biggs,2awing

I kind of messed up from the get go, as I had placed ties out first, opponent set bwing and ywing right across from my ties and I had the shuttle close by so I picked that side of the board for all my set up

(really wish I could show pics)

I found when setting up epic if you take one squad and set up at other end it takes 3 turns for it to get with the rest of your squad and that can be bad

I ended up in a joust position with the b pretty much.

I thought of ramming the b but eventually everything was out of the way.

In the end I had killed 2 bwings,biggs. 2ywing And Etahn I believe and had my back section crippled, lost a bounty hunter and tie. Front section was getting close 5shield two hull remaining and rest of his squad was still fresh.

400 pts definitely felt and looked epic but it definitely does take longer to clean up and set up.

I was little concerned thinking with this many ships huge ships would die fast.

Wasn't too bad, but a 400 Pt game could go sour pretty fast for someone with that many ship.

Plus 4b and 2y with biggs is a lot of hp to chew through lol.

Our next game will be 300

That way we can have little smaller fleet, and maybe start developing a some what of a meta.

Also found the more ships on the board the less effective the Emperor is.

It prevents 1 dmg but when you have 25-30 dice, that 1 prevented dmg isn't going to do much

Obviously the fewer ships on the board the more effective.

As poster few posts above mentioned

Flying a bunch of b and biggs I think is a hard contender In epic game

It's a lot of hp to chew through and they have a lot of attack dice

I am trying to come up with a imperial variation but Imps don't really have the hp and attack of a bwing at the low cost.

Scimitar with extra munations and a missle of some sort is closest I can think of

Using the Raider to give one a target lock with coordinate and another with targeting coordinator
