How to increase Force Rating

Recommended Posts

Can you only increase your Force Rating if you have a tree with Force Rating in it?

So Shien Expert will not be able to increase it.

If so, can you only increase it once for every Force Rating entry in a tree?

Shadow has 1 Force Rating entry at the bottom level for 25 cost.  Can you spend 50 to increase it twice?

Correct.  The only way to increase your Force Rating is to buy the Force Rating* talent.

And no, you can only by the talent once.  The only way to buy a talent more than once is if that talent appears in that tree multiple times.  So you can buy it twice in Seer and Sage, because it appears in those trees twice.  You can only buy Force Rating (or any Talent) as many times as it appears in that Spec tree.

Reread page 103 in the book and it should clarify that for you. Look for the paragraph that starts "When selecting talents, remember that each selection in the tree may only be purchased once."

* As a note/reminder; the Force Rating talent is also a Force Talent, so you also have to have Force Rating 1 to get the +1 to your Force Rating.  (i.e. Must be a F&D Career, or have bought Force Sensitive Exile or Emergent if a AoR/EotE career)  Not going to be an issue for you if you're talking about two Sentinel trees, as it sounds like you'll be starting as a Sentinel.

Quoted because of its importance. The only way you can get a FR of 1, and therefore use Force talents, is to have a F&D career or the Force Sensitive Exile or Force Sensitive Emergent specialization. Taking a F&D specialization does not grant a FR, just the career.

And like DarthGM said, the only way to improve your FR is to take the FR talent, found in all the non-lightsaber specs—sometimes more than once—and I think one 'saber spec has it (AFB, sorry). Being a ranked talent, you can purchase it once per instance in each talent tree. See the talent chapter for more info on ranked talents.

If you want to have the most access to force ratings, Consular is a really good bet.  Sage has it twice, Healer has it once, and Niman Disciple has it once.  Niman is one of the only saber tree's that actually gets a force point.  All three tree's also have some really nice talents.  There is a trade off.  The Sage sacrifices Dedication in order to have Force Rating twice.

Another reasonably easy way to get For Ratings is to grab Exile or Emergent, even if you are starting as one of the Jedi Tree's.  They count as career and are pretty straight shots down to the Force Rating.  Plus they have a lot of handy talents.

All that said, I wouldn't worry to much about getting a huge force rating.  Two is pretty good, and with three your going to be all around awesome.  You don't need a super high force rating to be effective.

We need to pin a topic that reads "READ THIS If You Have Questions About Force Ratings", or an FAQ for F&D or something. How many times have we had this question?

Not enough times to warrant this reaction to an honest question.

I'm not harping on him, but I have seen the question crop up a couple of times before. It's not everyday, certainly, but it got me thinking that a FAQ will be useful for F&D, because not everybody followed the Beta, and I imagine F&D will draw in a number of new people who avoided the other lines because they want to play Jedi.

Go for it.  All you have to do is post a thread and ask for it to be pinned.  Here's the EotE FAQ as an example:

One thing that crossed my mind is does Force Rating have a cap? I don't have the book yet (hopefully it arrives today  ;) ). Also if it does not what are peoples opinions on putting a cap on it and what cap that would be?

I swear this was talked about on the Order 66 podcast but I can't remember what episode or where.

The only cap is the number of Force Rating talents there are to buy. And I wouldn't bother with putting a cap. Somebody focusing on just grabbing Force Ratings isn't putting it in anything else, and are going to hit walls in usefulness. And by the time any character is able to get 5+, any non Force-Sensitives are probably well past the point of breaking the system already in terms of how much XP has been given out and spent.

Fair enough. I was just curious as having a 5+ FR in my mind starts to become very OP. I suppose you could counter it with villains who have about the same FR themselves. Just strikes me as interesting they didn't put a cap on FR was all.

So you don't think it would be hugely game breaking?

The funny thing about someone bee-lining for FR5 is that they have this amazing amount of Force dice, but absolutely no powers to use it with! Sure, a few talents might allow you to commit a FD or two, but those usually have a strain cost, so are self-limiting.

Unlike the past Star Wars games, being strong in the Force is only half the equation. In Saga and WEG d6 you spent some feat slots or character points to get a power, and its effectiveness was based on how well you rolled the dice. In this game, however, the efficacy of your Force powers are determined by how much XP you spend on the power.

A FR2 character who spent all their XP on tricking out their powers are going to be better than a FR5 character with just the base power. For example, without practically finishing half the Enhance tree, your FR5 character can't do a Force leap, whereas the FR2 character can Force leap to medium range as a maneuver!

In Short, Anakin vs. Obi Wan. The former had the highest Force Rating in history, but didn't spend much on his force sills. Obi Wan wasn't anywhere near that strong, but he had a lot more points spent in Force Skills. It evened out, mostly, as Mustafar showed.

Guys like Yoda and Sidious don't just have massive force ratings, they have maxed out Force Powers to back it up. That's why they're (in my opinion) about 8000 XP a piece.

Stuff like this is why we really should have some write ups for the heavy hitters. Always nice to have some kind of bar to use as measurement. I'd love to see a write up on Yoda and Sidious. The Vader ones are looking pretty good so far.
