What on God's Green Earth has GW done to Warhammer Fantasy?

Recommended Posts

I don't what's worse.

The $1,200 for the Fortress, or the $320 for the table topper. But then again someone did spend $96,000 on Princess Leia's slave bikini that was worn for the movie.

That was a one-of-a-kind item of historic film memorabilia, though.  Which doesn't need to be assembled or painted.

It fits quite comfortably, too.

I did consider with a tax rebate for a grand i had recently buying a £900 storm trooper film quality costume.

Then i thought, i've already splashed out about £500 on a tie fighter costume in the last few years and i can only wear one of them at a time.

But a toy castle for £700 jog on.

The thing is there are mental fans that buy these things

Back in the 90s at GW we released a metal thunderhawk that was about £400 (i aquired one as a manager perk in the 2000s) and it was fairly unusble.  It weighed about 4kg and required pinning with brass rods.

I sold mine for about £350 about a month before the resin FW one came out but all the retail/mail order ones sold out.

Likewise we did this *bonkers* promotion once where you could buy the *entire* ultramarines chapter for about two grand and expected not to actually sell any but for it to create a 'look what they have done now' buzz

I think we sold about 15 of them in total.

Thats 15 people with more money than sense who can spend a months wages on 1000 plastic soldiers they will never ever paint let alone game with.

I can't remember if a buddy of mine bought that Ultrasmurf force, or just had enough minis to make it. I did end up with that whole Tau rapid strike force (3x Devilfish w/FW teams, 2x Piranhas, some Stealth Suits, and Pathfinders) after originally splitting it with a friend of mine. Most of it didn't get used.

I do own a full space wolves great army led by Ragnar blackmane but it took 20 years to get that big and contains 2nd ed lead miniatures up to 5th ed plastics.

Even at the height of my fanboy days I wouldn't have bought all that in one go.

First time it struck me how insane prices are was when I boosted my necrons up to 2000 points £150 got me a flyer five immortals ten tryarch preatorians and three wraiths, 18 infantry and a model plane...my spending slowed down alot after that.

Actually, the 5th ed Necrons did me in, too. I was looking at the new stuff coming out, and figuring out what I needed to update my army, based on what I had. Minimum, 300 bucks. Given I was down to playing once or twice a year at that point, it wasn't worth it.

What really angers me is the necrons immortals are a troops choice but a squad costs you £50 for ten just because multi part kit let's you make the snipers.

It's such a poor deal because there's no way to use the extra bits because they share bodies.

I remember when you could buy a Salamanders mega army for like $300 Canadian. Like 30-50 Marines, Command Squad, Dread, a couple regular tanks, a Landraider, Assault Squad, Terminators, a bunch of other stuff... for 3 bills. Now you get a pittance for the same price. Praise inflation like the Emperor... It was 2nd maybe 3rd edition at best, but, **** y'know? Sigh...

Those were the days...   -_-
