About Expanded Launchers and attack range

Recommended Posts

Reading the new FAQ update, I have a question about this:

Q: When a ship resolves an ability that allows it to add dice to the attack pool, can it add those dice if their color is not normally appropriate for the range of the attack?

A: Yes. The range restriction on dice color applies only when dice are gathered during the “Roll Attack Dice” step of an attack.

That mean I can use "Expanded Launchers" even in medium or long range?

I'm spanish, my english is short and I'm trying to understand.

Thanks!

Enhanced Launchers: The battery armament for your front hull zone is increased by 2 black dice.

Most Wanted: While attacking an objective ship, the attacker may add 1 die of any color that is already in its attack pool to its attack pool.

Most Wanted is not it either, although it does use the word "add."  This is because of the phrase "that is already in its attack pool" so if you already had black dice, then things like Concentrate Fire command allows you to add a black die.

There was one other card or ability that allowed this to happen though.... like if you had an opponent on long range (red dice), then that ability kicked in, and you could "add" a black die or blue die...

Actually Most Wanted is perfect for this because it is still an Add effect. The point was to show the difference on the wording and what they meant.

It is the same with Concentrate Fire, Paragon, Opening Salvo (either player), etc.

His question involved modifying the dice during the attack, "increase" is not during the modify part it is during the gather attack pool part because is "increases ___"

Paragon is interesting.... attack a ship at long range, roll red dice.  If you manage to get that ship in 2 arcs and thus fire on it again, you can roll red dice plus one black die.  Yes, even though that ship is at long range.  :D

Opening Salvo is the perfect example of being able to add 2 dice of any color.  Unfortunately, it's a one-time effect.

As far as the OP's initial question re: Expanded Launchers, I think your initial reply covered it perfectly.

Sorry to be thick fellas but I've lost it a little here......when using an upgrade card that's says you can add die of a particular colour is it restricted by range or not? I.e. Adding two black die to a long range (red die) attack.

It is only restricted by the effect itself.

So if an effect said "add one black dice" it wouldn't matter the range. If it said "add one dice of a colour already in your dice pool" then you have to follow that restriction.

If it says "add," then you add it regardless of whether the dice color would be valid at that range or not.

The difference here is in step #2 of the ATTACK phase (p2 of the RRG).  When you "gather attack dice to form the attack pool," this is when you check for range so if the attack is at long range, you only gather red dice.  This is also where you check for any upgrades or abilities that allow you to INCREASE your attack dice such as Enhanced Armament.

You then roll the dice you've gathered.

Effects that allow you to ADD dice are resolved in step #3 Modify Dice phase which is where you reroll/add/change/spend/cancel dice.  So far, I've seen abilities that allows you to straight up add a dice (so a black dice at long range is possible, such as for Paragon) or add a dice of any color that is already present in the attack pool (Concentrate Fire command is an example of this).

Paragon terrifies me on the "most wanted" mission.

Attack 1 from front or rear;  2 red, plus one for most wanted.

Attack 2 from side:  3 red, 4 with enhanced armament, plus a black from Paragon, add a black for most wanted, add a black from concentrate fire.  Blergh.

For myself, I'f found the difrence between "add" and "increase" to be less useful than the difrence between "battery armament" and "Dice pool."

Armament is what's written on your card. Pretend there's more dice pictured there, and proceed as normal.

Pool is the dice in your hand. Put more dice in your hand, and roll them.
