Laser-cut insert for Descent - asking for feedback

Recommended Posts

I am 50% of "The Game Doctors"; we are two friends from Berlin, Germany, who enjoy playing board games. This hobby has spawned another hobby for us: designing laser-cut inserts for complex games.

We are planning to launch a Kickstarter campaign in a few months to gauge the interest for such inserts especially in Germany and Europe. If our campaign succeeds we will buy our own laser and offer our designs to the public.

At the moment we are presenting our prototypes on Facebook. One of them is for Descent: Journeys in the Dark (the base game).

It looks like this:

We want to make our inserts the best they can be, so we would really appreciate some feedback from fans of the game!

You can find the article about our Descent insert here: https://www.facebook.com/gamedoctors/posts/497399677085418

Please feel free to comment here or directly on FB (maybe even "like" our page).

Thank you!!!

This looks very similar to a foam core insert I made using instructions found on the Esoteric Order of Gamers website.

I very much like the look of lazer cut board though. Much more precise and durable than the foam core one.

Do the miniatures, tokens and cards from the Lieutenant packs fit in as well? Especially in the Base game, those seems to add up a bit (6 miniatures, 50ish cards, tokens, rules etc...)

I'm from france, and I wouldn't be interrested because :

- it only fits the base game,

- looks like it's not possible to store cards if sleeved,

- it is made for going inside the box

I throw away the original boxes for on some plastic boxex with drawers

So, the same idea in full plastic that could hold all expansion would be something that I will buy.

Wouldn't be interested. Like more people said, it might be interesting if it was a box for all expansions.

But I've got my own custom box, which also features some removable sections so they can be used during the game for easy access to tokens.

Quality wise this looks great, but 'functionally' it's a bit lacking for what I want out of it.

I'm in the same boat.  Pointless, unless i can fit everything from all expansions.  Don't get me wrong this looks fantastic, and I definitely need something like this.

I'm a completionist and I would make that suggestion for all your products.

I really really need something for Arkham Horror, but I would never buy anything that only holds the base game.

It looks really good! Clean.

My feedback is along the lines of those here. While I only have the original (just discovered this game!), I'm loving it and will buy the expansions. I need a storage solution that has:

Card storage keeps card sleeves in mind.

Room for everything currently out (including extra dice) and keeps in mind future expansions. This is tricky admittedly. A solution is to come out with a chest of some sorts. Granted this is high cost, high material, very specific target audience (compared to using the existing box).

Another solution is to assume that an owner is going to have multiple expansion at this point and desgin something that uses the primary box and an expansion box or two (are all the expansion boxes the same size?). I don't mind carrying two boxes.Three total is a little much, but doable with something like this: http://www.thebrokentoken.com/10-box-band-its-5/

Thank you all for the kind and/or critical words. We knew that providing an insert for a complex and extensive game like Descent would be difficult. Similar to Arkham Horror or even X-Wing you never really know what is in a gamer's collection. So for starters we concentrated on the base game. It is interesting to know how many of you are interested in a more comprehensive solution tying in the expansions also. The design by Atom4geVampire is impressive in that regard. With a game that complex I also think that one may have to leave behind the original box altogether. At some point in the future we will be attacking this problem, I'm sure. When we do, I will let you know!

I provided measurements and component listing to these guys when they ran the first iteration of their project. They are now running the project once again for those interested:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/932371889/mantis-storage-for-zombies-and-mythical-minions?ref=category_newest

These measurements can be found on BGG:

http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/115160/components-count-and-size-including-minis

I am not suggesting you should back this project, I´m not myself, mainly because I want the full storage solution to look worthy of Descent in terms of look & feel. Foam is nice to store painted minis, though, but I want more than a series of foam boxes.

Note this project is not about Descent, but you could use their design to store Descent components as well I guess.
