I get the feeling that Descent is nearing it's end...

Recommended Posts

Just curious, but who's steamrolling who?

In the previous campaign, the OL won every single quest and the finale was a joke. At the end of the campaign the OL had tanked on everything he could find and the heroes had just a few sub-par items. In every single quest we started it felt like the heroes would not make it, then dice rolls and bad card draw from the OL would give them advantage again, but then time was already out or the OL pulled the card he needed.

In the on-going campaign the situation is the exact opposite. Insane gold due to flaw in an early quest, along with treasure chest in every single encounter into a top tier weapon just ended the campaign prematurely. So with no XP and facing overgeared heroes the OL can't do anything.

@Indalecio: I see. Madness at Gardmore is a must have, imo. Besides, it comes with the deck. How wonderful it can be? :D

Hmm but you´re talking about the roleplaying game aren't you? Isn't Madness at Gardmore an adventure for D&D 4th ed? I don't really see how it integrates with the adventure game system, or are you just talking about inspiration?

I'm talking about inspiration. Consisidering you mentioned house rules, it's a pretty **** good scenario to play.

I can say that next to bonds of the wild, at least 5 more different items are planned for the future of descent. So just be a bit more patient for the time being ;)

Do you have sources at FFG?

I don't see how that could be any more than speculation- FFG announces things right here on the website, and they're serious about confidentiality- it's a marketing issue.

That being said, I don't think his guess is far off- if we assume they're going to finish the hero and monster packs, that's at least 2 more the way they have been going (4 heroes and 3 monsters), and then there are still a bunch of unreleased heroes which could go into a third pack. They'll probably even out the hero classes which has so far been done in small boxes, and then I think it's safe to assume they'll either release another campaign book or co-op adventure. I already count 5 things. The only way he's wrong is if they decide to put the lid on Descent's coffin and stop making content altogether.

Well here's a question, or maybe a thought.

They've been releasing content for the game for awhile now. Now assuming that all the stuff they have put out for it gets sold and going by how many of the recently released products have sold, would it honestly be in their best interests to stop making products for it? In other words... if the game is profitable, why stop releasing expansions for it?

I don't know.... seeing as how game stores have areas devoted to the game, I would assume that it's on of their top games.

I am not entirely convinced that the success of Descent directly reflects on the sales of side products like the H&M collections and the other expansions. It would be interesting to see if the H&M product line (or the lieutenant packs) really has a high demand value, or if they´re just seeked by completionists or collectors. In all cases they should be generating revenue, but I would think the number customers commited to buying the H&M packs is a small fraction of the actual number of players using the game in a regular way, effectively attesting the success of the game overall. Ultimately, there is a small possibility in my mind that FFG is not in need to finish off the H&M line in order to keep customers getting the game. That factor might in fact be insignificant when compared to the number of players initiated to the game willing to own their own copy, and players with interest in fantasy willing to be playing one of these games with a rather active community.

So yeah, in my mind I don't think releasing H&M packs really helps the game to "survive". It does somehow for us fans because it shows some attention from FFG and shows activity in the product line, but not everyone of us will in fact go and buy these packs.

Another factor is also the fact a huge product line like Descent is not always very appealing to new players. It is both overwhelming and pricey. Not every owner should consider getting everything, but Descent is not the same game (in terms of longevity/variety) if you just play the core box, which virtually puts a much higher price tag on the game once you´ve added 1-2 expansions, a couple of lieutenants, the Heirs of Blood booklet and a couple of H&M packs for the best possibnle value.

As for the speculation, while FFG certainly has a timeline for this game, which possibly includes its end of production, I don't personally think FFG is wrapping up anything currently concerning Descent. Activity is slowed down because of other factors. Descent doesn't really need new products to be a good game. And once it ends, if not replaced by another iteration or even another game, there are tons of possibility for including new monsters and heroes. Even tiles.

There actually are very valid reasons why companies stop producing something, even if it is still currently earning them money.

Sometimes it is a matter of degree ... while they can continue to develop and sell item A, it is a saturated market, and only makes them say a 5% profit.  Instead, if they develop and sell new item B, the potential market could be far larger, and each item could make them say a 10% profit.  It then just becomes a matter of simple math.

A more likely scenario is that most companies have to continue to grow and diversify to continue to be competitive and successful.  The creative individuals at FFG responsible for Descent may be needed on new teams to develop new products.

Checked some older posts, i think we can take Morthia's word for it.

For ex. he also had inside info way back in november on Heirs of Blood as well.

Maybe he's a playtester or something, i think we can now safely assume more is coming :-))

If he's a playtester, I doubt he's allowed to talk about it. If he's done it before, he's probably not still a tester for that reason. In either case, I'm just going to assume he's speculating.

I fully expect FFG to have a h&m set, a co-op expansion and another quest book in development.

If there are 5 being worked on then it would probably mean a box + lieutenant.

Those numbers only work out fora small box expansion.

If we were getting a big box then it would probably be a box, 3x lieutenants and a h&m set.

Either way I'll be happy, hoping for some terrinoth news at gencon.

Something will be announced soon, don't be afraid. Descent is one of their best game ever, so they will.

But maybe we don't need 3 expansions a year now,  maybe only 1 per year, or less is enough.

And whatever, a good game doesn't need more expansions to be good or alive. For example, Drakon hadn't had one for years now.

But for sure, I would love one would come soon. But I don't want this game be like Magic, and the more the times and expansions goes on, the more balance and old stuff is unbalanced.

My gaming group loves to play this game. We devour them as soon as we can get our hands on them. We've played all the quests. I'm trying to be patient... I know IA is the new hot thing, and it's really great, but we prefer the dungeon crawling experience.

One reason why I don't think it's dead, yet and why we might see a few more expansions, is that the game is still widely available (I know of at least 5 stores within 15-20 minutes of driving, amongst them 2 large book stores, in my area that carry the game and it's expansions, plus you can purchase it directly from amazon) and according to the owner of one of the stores (a flagship store of FFGs local distributor) it's their best-selling FFG product besides X-Wing. It might be different in other regions, but to me it doesn't seem like a system any reasonable game company would relaunch or quit supporting any time soon.
