Did the Empire ever use droids on the Tie's?

Recommended Posts

No astromechs were used on tie series fighters, most had no hyperdrives so didn't need them anyway, the advanced defender gunboat and missileboat just had droid brains built in to do the calculation.

Giving ties astromech slots would make them more expensive and the navy was all about cheap and expendable forces.

Astromechs do more than calculate or store hyperspace routes; they can make repairs or modifications on the fly (literally). That being said, I could see an astromech slot being added to a larger TIE design, like the Scimitar bomber or even a version of the X1/advanced. I guess the last Imperial fighters that added astromech were the old clone wars fighters like ARC-170, Eta-2 and V-wing, and any left over Y-wings. Given the nature of the Republic star fighter forces being so varied I'm sure the unified TIE design was desirable or even necessary. Imagine needing parts for V-wings but having an overabundance of Y-wing parts. Commonality is a wonderful quality when thinking about maintainance and logistics. Compared to the republic the empire had starfighters that were almost modular. Perhaps that's why astromechs were much more common for Republic and Rebel forces, they needed all the help they could get in keeping their ships flying!
