Building Decks That Won't Scare Away New Players!

Recommended Posts

Alright, I play at Star City Games here in Virginia, and one major issue we had for a long time was that when someone new came to play UFS with our group, they would get scared off by our top players. We asked them to you know tune it down a bit, but half of them net-deck and the others are just ruthless. After awhile of that crap, the game died off for a long while. Recently though, I started getting more and more new players into the tournament scene by making all the current players (which was only 3 at the time xD not enough for a tournament) to dumb down their decks. The current tournament format where we are at is Legacy and Personality Constructed. Now Personality Constructed is my own creation of tournament play to dumb down decks. Basically, as the name implies, you select your favorite personality, then build that deck with all the current cards with their picture on it from the set. If there isn't enough to make a full deck, then we stay on the general theme of that characters abilities without going overboard :D. Believe it or not, even though a bunch of the decks built this way have a load of 2 checks and such, it's amazingly fun, because you never know whose gonna come out on top! We've been enjoying this format and in the future plan to move back into the harder stuff, once all the noobies are good enough :). One more thing we established in the Personality Constructed format is a no play list. This is a list of cards that we find overpowered for beginners to use or go against. The list includes: Chain Throw, Fight or Flight, Bitter Rivals, Blood Runs True, Yoga Mastery, and  a few others that I can't think of off the top of my head, but I think you get the drift. My deck I used during several of these tournaments is one of my person favorite street fighter characters: Alex. Heres the deck.

Alex For Dummies

Main Personality: Alex Promo

Deck Size: 60 (61 with Main Personality)

Other Personalities (2): Alex Rare x1

Alex Ultra Rare x1

Attacks (24): Flash Chop x 4

Flying Cross x4

Hyper Bomb x4

Power Bomb x4

Slash Elbow x4

Spiral DDT x4

Foundations (24): Come into Your Own x4

Headstrong x4

Impressive Physique x4

Physical Fighter x4

Stay Down x4

Undefeated x4

Assets (5): Grappling Gloves x3

N.Y. Subway Station x2

Actions (5): Deadly Grapple x3

You Can't Escape x2

I'm sure most of you are thinking that the format is really retarded and that's fine, but I do strongly suggest trying it if you are having trouble keeping or even getting new players into the game of UFS. Or for you veterans out there, try it out! It's pretty cool because it feels like a real fighting game match! :D

Happy Playing!

Ya, that is a good idea.  Yoga mastery was voted not to be used because IMO, if they haven't reprinted it yet, there is a reason for it.  We still allow kunai and chain throw since most people have them, but they are not going to be remade either.  That and I usually throw themed tournies out, like ladies night and heavy weight.  I'll have to steal your idea and run a character theme deck heh.  Thanks.

I don't know if "character + his support" is a balanced-enough format to really interest newbies, imagine playing Dan or Rikuo [or insert character with fairly weak support here] against Cervantes [immortality + character F + Pieces of 8!? Oh noes!] or Ibuki [shinobi Tradition, Kasumi Suzaku? Bye-o].

I think you could do pretty well with an extended banlist for "newbies night" or something, and have some of your vets help out the new guys with their decks for the rest of the time. Or limit players to only build with cards from 2~3 sets instead of the entire card pool.

So star citys getting there players back i see thats good i remember the days when the older players used 2 come down 2 blacksburg on sundays and we had pretty big tourneys maybe once you guys get better and want 2 play in standard you guys can come down again that would be awesome.

But that is a really good idea though another thing you could try is just a common grounds tourney that way most player would have the same chance as no rares or ultra rares(aside from the characters) are legal

I like this deck a lot.  My friend makes theme decks all the time, and it is great bc you play cards that you would not play other wise.   I like the build of this deck also great job dude.
