Wave 3 and beyond

Recommended Posts

My holy grail is a winged "Liberty Class" MC80.

I think. Maybe I need to look through the other capital ships now to see if I have a new favorite...

Actually that's coming I forgot exactly which card might be the Tie-bomber, but it's in the photo art)

Could be a future huge ship.

I've been wondering if we might see some of the ships from the new movie before we see more from the EU. If wave 2 hits in the fall then it would make perfect sense for the next wave to coincide with the movie. If anyone has seen the Star Destroyer from Ep VII, it looks pretty sick.

I'd also really like to see some other factions. I know there's been talk of a scum faction, but this game is the first one that's made me want to see what a seperatist faction from the clone wars might play like. They had a lot of fun ships. Even the grand republic navy would be fun. I love the old clone wars attack cruisers and their fighters were awesome. I know I'd love to run some jedi fighter squadrons, maybe even with anakin and kenobi flying point.

There's definitely a lot of fun directions they could go. I just hope they can start to get them out a little faster.

for all intents and purposes, the role of the imperial Neb-b has been supplanted by the GSD

I dunno, the GSD felt more like a pocket cruiser to me compared to the lighter Nebulon Frigate (which is around 10 points cheaper). The closest the Empire is going to have to this come Wave 2 will be the Raider, which is more of a CR-90 analogue than anything else from what we can see (by theme as well, given it's the X-Wing huge ship). The rebels on the other hand will get their GSD equivalent with the MC30, which also has a powerful broadside and tries to get in close to its target.

So I think there is a space for an Imperial frigate that could be filled by the B2 variant.

i'm talking about gameplay roles here

the GSD carries many similarities to the neb-b, right down to the arcs and a squadron value to rival the escort.

imps are probably never going to get an efficient source of long-range firepower, considering the trend of every single ship released and spoiled thus far, since that steps on the toes of the rebellion too much. The imperial playstyle thus far has ships favor close or medium range

but it's not like the GSDs are absolute dogsh*t at long range. They lose a red die on their front and side (except the GSD - 2) but considering their leap in offensive output at close range while the neb stays the exact same, it's more than fair.

So I am kind of a noob when it comes to EU,(though I guess it does not matter anymore) I have watched the movies and played some of the games, I have seen this chart (below) is there more then this? The Raider makes me wonder if we will see lots of new ship created for this game past what we know. Also will we see something like the transport in Armada where its not so much combat focus as its a "utility ship."

starwars_and_wh40k_ships_2_by_dirkloeche

Wave 4 seems like a good time to drop the Executor as the most hype in X-wing was around wave 4. So What say you guys about wave 3? Will we see something crazy Huge or more of something the size of the VSD?

I still think the executor is too big even for sliding scale, BUT that Imperium class SSD up at the top seems doable. It's pretty close in size to the rebel Bulwark pictured below as well. Plus then we get another space whale! Edited by HalberdLeader

I'm pretty interested to see how diverse the imperial aesthetic will get after wave 2. There is still that weird balance between catering to fan favourites, and ensuring there's enough uniquely identifiable crafts for newbloods or more casual enthusiasts. Much like X-wing's rebels vs. Imperial “TIE and friends” lineup, lets see what crops up once the obvious designs are exhausted*.

My guesses aren't that different from others. I expect to see:

  • Immobilizer 418- there's quite a few things that can be done with this to make it playable, but that's neither here nor now.
  • Victory II Frigate- Admittedly, a name change is in order to make it more recognizable. Maybe rebrand it the Vengeance class (after the larger dread which will likely never see the light of day). It has a unique silhouette that is still identifiably Imperial in aesthetic, and it would be another small vessel in the Imperial arsenal.  There's nothing wrong with a slower monitor style warship to compliment the Victory, rather than the prowler Gladiator and Imperial classes.
  • Dreadnought heavy cruiser- It's a little like a wingless battlestar, but it's still ubiquitous and a real beast when it comes to a straight up fight. Plus, it looks a little more 'to scale' than the Carrack's enormous 'winnebago windshield'.
  • MC40 Mon Calamari Cruiser- It might seem a little out there, but it's still a recognizably mon-cal aesthetic and can be furnished into something unique.
  • Strike Class- Seems perfectly reasonable for a warship.

What I'd like to see is a Nebulon B2 for Imperials, it's always been one of my favourites (yeah, I've been using an imperial marked Nebulon B in local games to stand in for a Gladiator. Yeah-yeah, I know, but It feels wrong to have a Victory but no Nebulon B in an Imperial fleet) But I worry about its role and what it could fulfill. There's probably more wiggle room for something like the Victory II frigate than a Nebulon B2.

It'd be great to see a Liberty class MC80, I wonder if the packaging could be enough to differentiate Home One vs. Liberty without it being a different arc reskin of the same ship.  Given that Mon-cal ships are all supposedly unique, I don't see the problem other than the 'MC80' part of the designation.

The last thing is a Bellator Star Destroyer. I know, I know, it's too blasted big (7 km long) but I just appreciate the design aesthetic being a little more aggressive than most other Star Destroyer types. I like the dorsal ridge and 'prowling' look for a pocket battleship feel. Too bad it's not the Allegiance/Secutor's 2km size to make it more palatable.

That's really about it. A shuttle, VT-49, Tie Defender, Assault Gunboat, and Gozanti, GR-75, E wing, Z-95 pair of sets seems reasonable enough as far as squadrons go.

*Admittedly, a lot of EU designs are acquired tastes or nearly identical replicas of different hull types. Lets face it, there's not a world of difference between the identifiable aesthetics of a Percursator, Victory, Imperial, Tector (that we can surmise), Allegiance, and Imperium classes in general. The other slough of choices might be a little strange. Again, I said that about the Gladiator, and it's a hit.

Movement effects would be just about right for the Interdictor. I can imagine it  messing with yaws and speed dials of enemy ships in close proximity.

In X-Wing, they interpreted the GR-75 as a ship that indirectly attacks enemies using electronic warfare. Maybe the Armada version can have EMP effects that reduce shields or remove command tokens.

Honestly, a GREAT ability for the interdicor is to give it the ability to select the fleet ambush mission, even if your opponent didn't bring it.

Of course, the cost of such a ship will be disproportionate compared to the combat effectiveness of said ship... Rather like reality!

And there is precedent for such cards. For example, the Gunnery Team upgrade gives you the same ability as first player Advanced Gunnery mission.

Maybe a 15ish point upgrade in a special slot, but it only works if you are first player (the attacker).

If they're going to do an Epic style of game in Armada the way that they did in X-Wing, I'll probably sit it out until they really prove to be something that will be played. My X-Wing epic ships - as much as I love them, and think that epic play is fun - are just collecting dust, because that's not the way that X-Wing is played in my community. If they had come out with the Raider much, MUCH sooner, I think it would have been different.

Okay, enough said about the Executor (though it would be an awesome model).

For Wave 3:

I expect a 2+2 wave, with 2 Imperial, 2 Rebel. I would like a +1 something, but I don't expect it.

I do think they'll do the Immobilizer 418, though I really don't know what sort of mechanic they'll introduce for it. I just hope it's cool and not contrived.

On the Rebel side, I think they'll come out with the Liberty-class

I think they'll also come out with squadrons expansions with Defenders and E-Wings, etc., and that will be it for Wave 3.

I also hope they come out with a transports expansion, that isn't so much about combat as it is about objectives. However, I do not think that will be part of Wave 3.

After a few Waves, I envision that FFG would release a little book of campaign scenarios spanning the breadth of the Galactic War instead of adding more ships.

That would give us a small relief in our expenses while giving us something cool and to keep busy with while waiting for the next big release.

Well when they eventually port this system over to battlefleet gothic II, then they'll have plenty of ships to draw on.

Alas, Battlefleet Gothic. We hardly knew ye.

I got super nostalgic for BFG this morning while browsing Shapeways - found an Endeavor class light cruiser, which was a model I always coveted, but Citadel's molds warped the aquila prow and their version never got released.

It's expensive but I might have to pick a couple up. Someone talk me out of it!

Er... stop? Please? Think of the... of the... children?

Honestly I would love to see both Alliance and Imperial Neb-B2s along with Imperial Neb-Bs but the odds of that seem like basically nil. I always hated when people gave identical class names to completely different ship designs in the same basic era of a setting. The Victory-II Frigates and Star Star Destroyers plus the Imperial-II Frigates and Star Destroyers being prime examples. (Though I hate the Imperial-II Frigate for a long list of other reasons as well Whoever drew up the stats for that thing was crazy.) Though if they ever do a scum faction they will likely use a lot of Zann Consortium ships and the Consortium already has a Vengeance-class Frigate. Perhaps name it Victorious-class instead?
