Weighing Expansions vs More Copies of Base Game

Recommended Posts

Hello:

I'm picking up three copies of the base game and I'm wondering if I need to also pick up the expansions for the Victory, Corvette, and Nebulan B.  Since all three ships are included in the base game, my question is do the expansions have different cards and upgrades just like the X-Wing and TIE Fighter expansions in the X-Wing game?

Thanks

Base Versus Expansion is almost identical to X-wing. Expansions provide a second and third Fleet Commander to both sides, with new and interesting options to improve your fleets. Expansions provide new and powerful titles for your three core ships, much as Wedge was only available in the X-wing expansion while Luke was in the Core set. Plus, there are also new upgrade cards available o lay in the expansions.

As a Rebel player, I can't imagine running my fleet without the expansion only title cards. Enhancing my squadrons or increasing my forward firepower are just too good to pass up on. And, my Corvette title and command upgrade are an interesting alternative to Dodonna's Pride for fleet enhancement.

Honestly, I would stop at two Cores, I myself only have a single, and invest that money in a single copy of the expansions for the core ships. Heck, those three ships are cheaper than an extra core set, while also giving you access to all those new upgrade cards.

Thanks.  That helps a lot.

I plan on doing the 3 Core Sets so I have, in addition to the three Core ships, the fighters and the Dice, as well as extra templates and the like.  I have 3 X-Wing sets and 3 Imperial Assault sets and that's the number that seems to work for me.

Thanks for your help.  I really appreciate it.

My main issue with multiple cores is that once the ISD comes out, there won't be much need for the much slower VSD. Let alone three of them.

maybe he wants to run 5 vic-1s with tarkin duh...

(it is doable and cost exactly 400 points, 0 upgrades though)

but seriously you do not need more then 2 cores, in fact I would go as far as saying the third core will be almost a total waste!! get expansions in stead and if you really want alot of those ships get multiple expansions

Yeah I just can't see how a 3rd core set is even remotely cost effective.

You need a VSD expansion for the cards really, but even in a 400 point game you'll be hard pressed to fit 4 VSD's in a list. 2 VSD 2's and 2 VSD 1's with Screed comes out to be 342 points, with no upgrades.

The same goes for rebels, you'll almost never need a 4th Neb, and would seldom really want 4 CR's.

I'd say use the money you are spending on the second and third core sets to get the equivalent number of expansions.

With extra cores you're getting a redundant damage deck, obstacle tokens, and admiral-title cards for both sides. With the expansions you are saving money, getting new content, and possibly access to new upgrade cards not contained in the starter. I haven't compared them yet, but that's the pattern followed by X-Wing at least.

I'm running with one core, I don't feel the need to get another one.

I only bought one core set + expansion and I am glad I did. I did buy an extra package of dice, and I personally feel the extra dice pack is a must buy if you are only going to buy one core set. But I don't miss having a second core set in Armada. Too many duplicates. It's not like X-Wing where you need a ship card for every ship on the table.

The extra core set might be good in case you lose some components from your first set. Of those, I think only the damage deck might be a problem. Everything else will be available separately or from third parties once they get going on acrylic tokens. (I misplaced my third turn token.)

I started with 2 core sets as it seemed a more economical solution for doubling dice, movement tool, squadrons and doubling ships. But now I notice I am missing some cards that come with the upgrades and am not sure if I need a 3rd VSD just to get Motti. Hmm...

I'm glad I saw this, as I was thinking of getting another core, but I think I'll get the individual Wave I expansion versions of the ships included in the core set, if only to get the upgrade cards not included in the core.  If you have the extra core, but just want the cards, I did see some e-Bay auctions for upgrade cards.  Set a search alert, and you might find what you need.

Get one core set now and the expansions, then wait for the inevitable reissued TFA core set sometime towards the end of this year (just like Xwing) and you'll get whatever new ships they decide to tie in, along with all the spare dice and rulers as well as an updated rule book with all the FAQs incorporated.  All-round win if you have the patience...
