Will Epic ever take off?

Recommended Posts

I have to admit that I'm really getting interested in some epic games, especially with a lot of the newer players.  It's always so cool to see it happening on the table.  I need to wait till after Regionals, though, as I need all the practice I can get vs. bro bots and Fel Admiral.

I like the idea of epic, but IMHO FFG screwed up the rules for large ships, namely the way they suffer hits from tiny fighters. That's just not the way I expected it to work. It should be kinda mandatory to bring bombers or other heavy secondary weapons to fight a huge ship, instead the best tactic I experienced was lots of Interceptors. Finished a corvette in 3 turns with 6 ceptors. We had enough points left for a tie screen that kept most of his escort busy. It was sad to see the rules work like that, I would have loved to be forced to take some bombers (that would be like an objective in its own, to bring down the huge ship you have to get the bombers in range, so the escort will try to kill your bombers while you try to protect them). We will probably house rule the way huge ships take damage from non-huge primary weapons to get to that point (something like half damage round down while shields are up, and crits not counting at all). That should encourage the usage of secondary weapons (missiles and torpedoes, heavy laser cannon)

Is that a problem with Epic or with ordnance?

Definitely Epic, the way huge ships take damage from non-huge primary weapons. Ordnance is fine, but you don't need it. And that doesn't feel right to me, I should need bombers to wreck a CR-90, but with the current rules I'm better off with non-ordnance stuff. Of course FFG could make ordnance way stronger so it becomes a viable option even in normal 100 point games, more so in Epic then. But I am happy if the huge ship rules get tweaked some; just nerf the primary attacks from non-huge ships :-D

No Epic will never take off.

Epic ships are and will continue to be a "extra" bit for this game.

Star Wars armada is for epic play.

Unless you are, on I don't know, not interested in armada.

I have 0 interest in investing in yet another game system and and all the new purchased that come with it...I'll stick to the system I am already invested in...and I know I am not alone.

My local playgroup mostly does 200~ team games, with all 4-5 players in on one big game rather than splitting up for 1v1 deathmatches. I'm optimistic about them enjoying Epic once I pick up a Corvette next week.

As for my personal interest in Epic, I'm looking forward to it quite a bit. In the movies we don't see many examples of battles that match the Epic template - the opening chase features the far-too-big n' scary ImpStar, Yavin has no cpaital ships, Hoth has the eve nmore too-scary Executor against basically a bunch of transports, and Endor is a massive fleet engagement. But in the EU, the Epic style of confrontation is probably the most common, as one capital ship will launch its complement of gihters against the other's, and capital ships are too hard to produce en masse to be patrolling in fleets. The X-wing books in paritcular, especially especially Rogue Squadron, are chock full of engagements that mattch Epic play. But those made we wish we could get a Lancer, which would probably be far too powerful in this game.

While I understand your point - I'm of the same opinion actually - I can see many people feeling differently. When you can get a single Raider for X-Wing, or the Armada starter for almost the same... that's a tough choice for some. You either invest heavily into a single ship meant for a very special type of gameplay - or into a playable new game alltogether.

That said: I won't get either. ;)

Oh I get that...but the fact remains. I but the raider it's a one off purchase...I but armada I have just opened the door to buying even more expansions (a la xwing)...I have already invested the small amount of disposable income I have to xwing and am caught up on ships I need...getting into armada ours me right back at the beginning
