Yes, I will have some resin ships available.  They take a couple weeks, shapeways time then the molding time.  I'll post some pics when they are ready.

I'd say there are advantages and disadvantages to both 3d printed and resin.  Both require a little cleaning and priming.  The nice thing about resin is it is fairly tough so no need to worry about it breaking like FUD.

Not sure on WSF failures.  I'll will try it myself and let you know.

I'm so opposite of that, I find the clean up with the printed stuff is just as hard but the material is less forgiving to my files. Even the slightest mold line or printer stepping gives me fits.

Ah! Yeah I'd never try filing it down.

I've never gotten a WSF model with mold lines, only grain.

Printer stepping also tends to be a thing for FUD - I haven't seen it in WSF.

In either case, I find a simple sprayed on basecoat (gloss or matte) out of a can - not so thick as to obscure the details, but not so light as to *just* add color - is enough to smooth out the models enough for my satisfaction. Then I can paint on matte or whatever.

These guys have slightly more involved processes if you care... but I still think they'd be easier than clean up of a resin model:

Wes,

Its a Utar resin. It's the Neutron Star Bulk Cruiser. Really a fantastic model. And Utar is a first rate caster. No air bubbles or voids in the casting at all. I have two of them. hey paint up beutifully. Im very excited for his resin AF Mk I and Dreadnought. I've ordered his Shapeways CR-90s and GR-75s and the fighter stand toppers. Looking forward to them. Im with you on the 3 CRs to a stand.

Ya sounds good. Going to have to get some Bulk Cruisers also. Its no fun if I can't have all my toys. Has he already got the dreadnought and assault frigate available in resin?

I think my biggest problem is how obsessive do I become about the scale...

Thalomen, nice looking fleet!  I figured out that the escort carrier I have had for WotC SSB is also about 1/7000 so that is also available in resin.  A lot of the other frigate size stuff is coming in this week so it will be available in a week or two. Here is the escort carrier

Well, look at it this way. There is a lot of things you could be spending money on. At least with this, if you ever had to, you could get most of your money back out of it.

I think it's ok to be a little OCD about the scale. Many of us wanted this game long before FFG came around. However, the sliding scale is a pointless thing that almost ruins the look of the game. Wanting the best possible table cinema is just normal. I think that we are very fortunate to have Utar and Mel sharing thier talent with us. To my mind, if you can afford it, be as obsessive as you want to be! Throwing a little support and appreciation thier way (meaning FFG, Utar and Mel all inclusive) hopefully encourages them to continue.

Uhh...no? It is not pointless, and it does not ruin the look of the game. In fact I think you could find that for many players enthusiastically snapping up armada, scale is not a concern. That the ships are big enough to marvel over (but with a sense of representational scale) draws players in to buy more attractive models.

Also one has to ask the question, "Would those same players buying Armada be interested now if their favorite corvette/frigate was the size of a US dime?"

I understand the sentiments of those who are scale-conscious, but I like FFG's decision to go representational more. It allows them to cover a wider range of ships with attractive models without the concern about ships being too small to be visible. In other words, I like that we would have to go to Utar for such a "mod" over it being the default, because scale doesn't determine which ships will be made and which won't.

Here are a couple pictures, or at least links to them, of my fleet with 1/7000 CR-90s added. Those are Utar's ships and stand add ons to put 3 ships on the base. It's really begining to look like an actual Armada now!

Those are exceptional! It's great to finally see a fleet of the 1/7000 stuff on the table - inspiring, to say the least.

The AFII looks a little out of place though - what scale is it in?  I know the 1/7000 fits in nicely with the Victory, but the AFII must be in a different scale...

Thank you for your kind words. I do have to say a lot of credit goes to Utar and Mel. I can take credit for the paint (and I have worked hard on building my paint skills) but without them making those 7000 gems there would be nothing to paint and no 7000 fleet!

I don't know what scale the Mk II is. I never really saw it in any game and I have kept myself willfully ignorant of its size so that it looks ok to me. Having said that, the single engine bugs me to the point that when Utar's Mk Is come out in resin, I may replace my Mk IIs with them. I plan to get his Mk Is either way but I had planned to keep the Mk II on the table to have a little variety in the fleet. But that one engine... Im thinking of kitbashing some engines onto it. Maybe Mel or Utar might consider a Mk II upgrade kit of engines for it?

wookieepedia puts it at 700m so the scale is just about right, maybe a scosh too big, but not a lot.

However, any chance of seeing an engine expansion, made to fit the FFG Mk2, that we could order?

The pathetically small drive engine seems to be the biggest complaint with the AF Mk2.

Thank you all for your kind words.

If any of you are going to be in Orlando on Sept. 24th-27th, my gaming group is putting on some games at a convention called HurriCon. We are going to have a couple of games of Armada as part of a campaign. Our Armada games are going to feature Utar's and Mel's ships. If you want to see a fleshed out 1/7000 fleet in action before diving in, come on and play.

We will take plenty of pictures and post them here, too. I promise those pictures will be better. If you have resisted 1/7000 untill then... "It is unavoidable. It is your destiny."

Below is a link to the convention web site if anyone is interested.
