Dark Heresy Digital Character App now available

PDF Export? Excellent! Loving the app on my tablet, even if it is a bit of a battery drain.

 

We are looking into this and try to optimize the app's power usage. On my iPad, I use about 60% battery when playing a session (which is about 5-7 hours). Do you use an iOS or Android device?

You might have noticed that the update is not yet available. We are still in the testing and bugfixing stage, which had to be extended due to one specific new feature (not the PDF export). I really hope we can finish the tests this weekend and release the new content next week. I am pretty sure you will like it :-)

 

== Off Topic ==

In the meantime, something completely off-topic: Last weekend was a game programming jam called Ludum Dare, where you (only one person, no teams) had to program a game completely from scratch (you are allowed to use game engines) in 48 hours with a theme (this time the theme was "you are the monster"). Keep in mind this games are very simple, the balancing is non-existent and most of the time you don't have anywhere near 48 hours to write the game (especially if there are features to test for an upcoming content patch). Anyway, enough of the thread hijacking, back to the 40.000k century ;-)

MEMORY ERROR MEMORY ERROR MEMORY ERROR. This haunted us for the last few weeks...

 

== Sorry ==

 

First of all, sorry about the “radio silence”, we were working day and night to finish the release (besides other problems which we needed to solve first). In the beginning, we tried to provide a new app version around every three weeks. This time, it took a bit longer.

 

== Memory Error Problem ==

 

After we were done coding all the features and fixing bugs on August 29th, we started our final tests. In this stage, we are copying the app on all of our test devices and start testing the new features. Normally, nothing goes wrong in this stage, because we also use a small subset of these devices in our development stage. We were quite shocked to see that all iOS devices and a few android devices crashed on the PDF generation with a “Memory Error”. For the technical people: Let’s take an iPad for example. Any app on it is allowed to use 500mb RAM. If the app goes beyond this limit, the app closes instantly without any error message. This happened every time we tried to generate a character sheet PDF file.

Eventually, we scrapped the whole PDF generation and started over with a new approach. After a week with very little sleep and over 400 generated pdfs, the new sheet was done, works great, looks almost exactly like the FFG Character Sheet (except for the background, which is white on our sheet).

 

With the PDF Generator done, the new version is finally complete and, after a last round of tests and the usual approval process, will be pushed to the server. To be on the safe side, I expect the update to go live on monday, but maybe we will get it live faster.

 

== Mystery Image ==

 

You might remember our cool mysterious image we revealed step by step on our blog. This was a badly executed marketing attempt to hype the new patch and we are very sorry about that. We are a new company and still have a lot to learn, but we promise we won’t do a guessing game this way ever again ;-)

But I think we still owe you the final image, so here it is:

== Content Update 1.3.0 ==

 

Here is the full list of what is new in the 1.3.0 update:

  • Multiplayer:
    Play with your friends! The multiplayer allows you to create rooms for you and your friends, where each dice roll made in the app, every initiative roll and every combat action is shared with all characters in the room. You can view the character sheets of your friends and the inquisitor can add multiplayer characters to the warband.

  • Printable Character Sheets:
    The most requested feature is finally in the app. Create a pdf file from any of your characters by clicking the “create PDF sheet” button in the character backup popup (due to technical limitations, only the currently active character can be exported to pdf, so please activate the character you like to export first). The PDF File will be stored in the same folder as the character backup files and can be viewed and printed by any pdf viewer.

  • Character Cloud Backup:
    It is now possible to create backups of your character in the cloud. It works like the offline backup, but it is in the cloud! :-) It should work even if you delete the app from your device and later install it again.

  • Power Save Mode Button:
    There is a new button in the footer of the overview tab. It enables/disables the power save functionality of your device (only for DHDCS), which means the screen will not darken after a few minutes.

  • Combat Actions:
    Ever wondered what you can do during a fight? All Combat Actions from the source book are now in the combat tab, easily accessible via the search function and including a description. If the action involves rolling dice, the app automatically shows this option. It also includes any dice modifiers made for example by aiming (even half and full round aim) and all out attacks.

  • Error Indicators:
    Duplicate Aptitudes and negative Experience Points are now shown in bright red to help you spot these sheet errors.

  • Touch the “Max Carry Weight” line in the inventory section to add a modifier (for example because you are wearing a backpack)

  • Reloading Ammo via the reload button now works as expected

  • lots of minor bugfixes

In the very near future (next week), we will open a youtube channel with tutorial videos on how to handle the app as well as feature overviews and more.

 

== What’s next? ==

 

With the new release, we think that the Dark Heresy 2nd Edition App is in a good state for the moment. It is quite possible that we will release a bugfix patch or two next, depending on the stability of the multiplayer. Our next project, the Dark Heresy 1st Edition App, is already in the making and will be out quite soon. The next big content update for the 2nd Edition is planned with the release of the “Enemies Without” supplement.

it may be a good time to open your Dark Heresy Digital Character Sheet App. There might be an update waiting for you... ;-)

 

Because this is a huge update, we expect bugs. That is something that cannot be avoided completely, so if you find one, please report it via mail to support@dizelabs.com and include the character file of the character which was active at the time the bug occurred.

And here is the inevitable 1.3.1 bugfix release. But this time, we've even added a new feature! You will automatically get the update when you open the DH2DCS app.

Changes in this version:

  • fixed: Player Name missing in PDF export
  • fixed: Non-default skill names break PDF export
  • fixed: Elite Advances shown as [object] in PDF
  • fixed: Mementos missing in PDF export
  • fixed: XP calculation wrong in PDF export
  • fixed: NaN shown in modifiers on first combat action with character
  • changed: new waiting-popup while pdf is being created
  • added: Damage Dice Rolls in Multiplayer Chat
Damage Dice Rolls:

Just type "1d10" to throw a D10 and get the result. This works like the other dice rolls, just without the target value.

 

Non-default skill names in PDF:

The skill names in the DH2 (Paper) Sheet Template are quite "hard-coded", which means you cannot add your own skills in the template except for Lores and Trades. In the 1.3.x version, we try to stick to the original template wherever possible, which unfortunately removes the ability to add custom skills in the pdf export (they are of course shown in the app itself). In the 1.3.0 version, custom skill names broke the pdf export, which has been fixed in 1.3.1. We might change the skill creation in the future to allow the export of all skills, but for now, if you want to be on the save side, use the search function to add new skills. These skills will have the right name format to be displayed in the PDF. Perhaps an example is easier to understand: If you name your Skill "FL: Underworld", it won't be shown on the PDF export, because the app does not know what FL stands for. If you stick to our naming conventions and name the skill "Forbidden Lore (Underworld)" or "Forbidden Lore: Underworld ", it will be shown at the right spot in the PDF.

Good news everyone! I made an error, and as a result, you get a new feature!  :P  :D

 

I forgot to set to disable landscape mode in the new iOS version of the app, which means the app now features landscape mode on tablets. This should not be the case, but Apple was very fast with the app approval this time and the new version is already out. We disabled it because we thought it would need a major rewrite of the layout code to get everything working in landscape. That said, I checked the whole app and besides a few minor graphical errors, the landscape mode surprisingly works. We will release a bugfix in the next days which will reformat the wrong graphics. There will also be an android release once the bugfix goes live to also allow android users to use the landscape mode.

hi i just bought this app and honestly i liked it a lot.

 

i think i got a minnor bug, after creating an assassin character, the app wont let me choose between the aptitudes: ballistic skill or weapon skill, it just automatic choose ballistic skill.

You're right. There is an option missing in the creator. I'll add it to the bugfix list for the next patch, thank you for the report :-)

hey i was thinking, would be difficult to add an option to te aplication that when creating a character, you could choose which aptitudes do you want and the app tell you what you should choose to have them?

It would not be difficult on the technical side, but I see a problem with the layout. I think such a feature would be neat, but it would require a detailed instruction on how and why to use it. We might extend the character creation in a future update and then we will discuss on how to change the layout to add more features to it.

 

== Bugfix Release 1.3.2 is live! ==

Your friendly neighborhood auto updater should update the app to version 1.3.2. This minor release fixes the following issues:

  • fixed landscape graphics on the iPad overview tab
  • fixed a spelling mistake in the aptitudes
  • added the option to choose between Ballistic and Weapon Skill aptitude in the Assassins role creator
  • updated the graphics of the player list in multiplayer chat

The landscape mode for Android tablets is still in the works and will be released as soon as it is done.

Also, if you have problems connecting to your friends in multiplayer, you might be still on the old server. If you are experience this, please update your app with the current store update. If this does not help, backup your characters (on your hard drive), delete the app and reinstall it. Unfortunately, we had to switch servers because of the better scalability, although you shouldn't have noticed it, we've done this a while ago when we released the 1.2 version.

Minor bug, when you use The aim action, you get automatically The bonus to your next attack, this is not The case for "guarded action".

Another bug, when you press reload on The combate screen and you press save, The weapon still appear with 0 bullet in The clip, bit when you do it manually (by pressing +10 on clip), it works fine

I'll check that. I thought that we fixed this in the latest bugfix release. Was this a new weapon or had the weapon been saved before?
