Fleet Builder

Recommended Posts

I like your builder.... the UI-design is not my cup of tea (white background always irritates me when I am not writing) but it is good and very functional

Two little criticsms though:

- The blue UI-fields for the card info are always present, even if there is not card selected. This give me the expectation that they should be interactive when they are not and distracts from their real purpose as you have no indication wheter or not it is functional. If possilble you could remove them or just let them be a different colour until a card is selected.

- A "Clear all Fields"-Button would be nice, so once you are done building one list you can easily go to building the next one without having to unselect everything by hand)

(on a related note, refreshing the Browser [in this case Firefox] cleared all input but the "faction"-field in the UI stays on your previous selection)

I've added a "View Text" button that displays the fleet you've built as a text for easy printing, pasting to forums, etc. I think this is the most pressing feature.

@Orph3u5: I've got to fix the refresh browser bug, I can also add a clear all button and fix the UI (agreed it's poor design as it is). I will eventually apply a decent colour scheme. I've not played with the CSS (page formatting) much yet, just enough to lay everything out. I'll build navigation and what not and that will be when it gets some nicer colours.

Thank you!

I'll be bookmarking your builder and using it as my default choice for the time being. Fab's Fleet Builder is cool, and I appreciated having it around so quickly into Armada's lifespan, but I greatly prefer the dropdown selection style you have chosen to utilize.

Top priority re: baseline functionality (imo) should be getting the ship stats in there somewhere. I still haven't memorized/internalized the differences between each ship class variant, so I need to be constantly reminding myself during list building.

Another thing to include would be mission selections. I don't think any other squad builder has incorporated them yet, so it's an untapped feature.

Just uploaded a new version.  It's now a lot more like a website from this century and more pleasant to look at.

Cheers for the advice Gibrarian, I'll be adding the missions.

I haven't figured out a simple way to include the ship details: them and squadrons are on the soon list.

Just added in objectives.

Progress is because the Monaco GP has been boring; I wish they would stop saying how awesome it is.  Sure it's got history and an exotic location, but from my couch it's just a procession.

Thank you for the great tool!

Also on the view text I don'y believe its showing or calculating the commander (sorry if that's old news).

Ahahaha... you pulled this off so quickly that when I visited the site today to make a list I was like, "OMG he already had the missions in there, and I was just too dumb to notice"

Background colour change is a simple but enormously effective tweak. Great work!

On the subject of the objective cards, since you have to pick one of each color objective for your list you could have each of the 3 drop downp menus for them just show the objectives of a single color, so each menu only has 4 choices instead of 12.

I wasn't aware of the rule with objective cards (we hadn't played withem much). That's a pretty easy fix, I'll work it in this evening. Makes it simpler as well, I should have learnt the proper rules.

I went a bit early on the GP too, in my Defense up until lap 50 not much has gone on.

The fleet builder now spits out some BBCode at the bottom of the view text option. This lets you paste it into the FFG community forum and get something a little like this (note you need to turn of the Rich Text editor to get the forum to accept the code):

Test BBCode fleet (300 of 400 pts)

Flagship: (136 pts)

  • Victory I-Class Star Destroyer(73 pts)
  • Grand Moff Tarkin (38 pts)
  • H9 Turbolasers (8 pts)
  • Dominator (12 pts)
  • Point-Defense Reroute (5 pts)
Fleet Ship 1: (67 pts)
  • Gladiator I-Class Star Destroyer(56 pts)
  • Engineering Team (5 pts)
  • Insidious (3 pts)
  • Defense Liaison (3 pts)
Squadrons (97 of 100 pts):
  • 1x Darth Vader Tie Advanced Squadron (21 pts)
  • 1x Major Rhymer Tie Bomber Squadron (16 pts)
  • 5x Tie Advanced Squadron (60 pts)
Objectives:
  • Precision Strike
  • Fire Lanes
  • Superior Positions

I've put together an embryonic fleet builder for Armada. There's still plenty of features to add, but I figured I'd throw it up here and see what people thought so far. Be warned it doesn't restrict unique upgrades/squadrons yet.

I was going to say: what's the point of manking a new one?

But after checking it out I found it to be quick and easy to use.

Well done.

Thanks, that is why I did it. The one out there I found awkward to use, I've tried to keep this one clean and simple. This should also work on most devices: iPads, blackberries, pcs and phones. Edited by NanoTanks11

This design is 8 million times better than the last one - it was so bad I couldn't use it, this is awesome.

I'm a UX consultant by trade, I have very little patience for crap designs, this isn't. Well done and thank you. Put a paypal donation button up on the site and I'll send you a fiver!

Love your app, and have been using it heavily.  But I think I found a bug:  with some recent builds (all rebels, all using Neb-B's as flagship), the Rebel Commander doesn't appear on the list!  It's happened several times, with several lists.  Haven't tried from the Imperial point of view.  The points still seem to come out correctly.  Here's a copy and paste of the code:

Rebel Gunline AF Nebs (292 of 300 pts)
Flagship: (64 pts)

  • Nebulon-B Escort Frigate(57 pts)
  • Salvation (7 pts)

Fleet Ship 1: (86 pts)

  • Assault Frigate Mark II A(81 pts)
  • Paragon (5 pts)

Fleet Ship 2: (64 pts)

  • Nebulon-B Escort Frigate(57 pts)
  • Salvation (7 pts)

Fleet Ship 3: (64 pts)

  • Nebulon-B Escort Frigate(57 pts)
  • Salvation (7 pts)

Squadrons (0 of 98 pts):

Objectives:

  • Opening Salvo
  • Contested Outpost
  • Intel Sweep

I like this better than Fabs. Any chance you can add an "I" button for the ships? Or if it is there maybe I am blind. Be nice if I could compare glad 1 and glad 2's while trying to make my list choices.

Yeah, I think restoring some of the missing information (ship stats, objective text) is the final step to making this 100% practical and functional (and the best builder currently out there).

Whether you choose to display the actual cards (like Fab's does) or construct your own sidebar summaries (like Yet Another X-Wing Squad Builder does) I feel that sort of information needs to make it into any good builder. People can't always remember all the details, and it's no fun having a pile of cards in front of you when you're using a digital squad builder.

Right now I'm using both yours and Fab's (constructing the list in yours, but referring back to his for ship stats).

Thing is about tool tips is that they don't work on mobile. And the majority of users are mobile based now. Can you make it a toggle to show hide stats instead?

I could do a full UX check up if I have a chance.

I just checked and the tool tips work fine on my phone (using Chrome in iPhone 5c).

Great job with the ship stats!

I had been relying on looking up the cards on Star Wars Armada Wiki....very useful.
