Speed Changes

Recommended Posts

I have a question that is not very clear in the rules.

When resolving the Navigate command and I choose to change speed, would I do that before I set the maneuver tool and use the new speed to set it; or would I set it, execute the maneuver and then change speed, or can I choose to do it at either time?

It looks like you resolve the command during Step 1 "Determine Course" (p. 11 of Rules Reference). If anything with the speed/yaw is going to be changed, it would need to be at that time. Once the ship has moved, the time to execute the order has passed, so the the speed could not be changed at that point.

From the RRG:

Dial: Increase or decrease the ship’s speed by one,
and/or increase the yaw value of one joint by one for
this maneuver.

So basically, you'd be increasing it for that maneuver. So you optionally change your speed, and then move according to your new speed, with an additional single click of the yaw if so desired.

I am still not sute if the speed change is optional if choosing to resolve the command. The reference blurb you quoted says so, but the actual rule in the main book says only the additional yaw is optional.

I'm pretty sure it says and/or meaning you can change speed or increase yaw or both or neither if you decide not to use the command.

Don't have the rules at hand to check at the moment though.

To use the effect of the command or to get a command token you need to spend the command dial. If you do not spend it, you do not get any effect.

You're never *forced* to use the effect of a command dial. You can choose to bank it as a token. Even if so doing means you're trashing a token to replace with the same one. Other than that, you can choose to change speed OR change yaw OR change both.

The "Rules Reference " is the main rulebook and overrides the Learn To Play Rules if ever there is a difference between them.

Golden Rule, p1, RRG:

"This Rules Reference booklet is the definitive source of rules information for Star Wars: Armada. If something in this booklet contradicts the Learn to Play booklet, the Rules Reference booklet is correct"

It states on p3, "Commands" for the Navigate Icon:

"Dial: Increase or decrease the ship’s speed by one, and/or increase the yaw value of one joint by one for this maneuver."

"and/or" can only mean that you are free to do any of the following three:

A) Increase or Decrease the Speed by one, and don't use the extra Yaw. (First option of the "or")

B) Increase yaw value of one joint by one, without changing speed. (Second option of the "or)

C) Both change your speed and use the extra Yaw value. (option "and")

If the speed change was mandatory, it would need to be worded differently.

Also remember that you can only bank it for the token when the dial is revealed (i.e. when you reveal, you must choose whether you want to keep the dial or get the token). If at a later stage in the activation you decide not to use the dial, you CANNOT cash it in for a token.
