squadrons 'escort'

Recommended Posts

Could someone give an example of how this works say between 3 x wings and 3 TIE fighters.. (some of these cards just seem jibberish)

In the core box it makes no difference.

It only makes a difference once you have other squadrons that don't have the escort ability, like for instance Y-Wings.

If you had 3 Ties, 3 X-Wings and a Y-Wing then the Ties would have to get rid of the X-Wings before being allowed to take a shot at the Y-Wings.

Just to point out something, you'll still have to be careful how you position your squadrons to take advantage of Escort.  If the above three X- Wings were leading the charge with the Y- Wing behind them, the TIE Fighters could leap behind the screen to engage the Y- Wing.  Or maybe more likely, send in one TIE to engage the X- Wings, forcing them to attack that squadron.  That would free up the other TIEs to hit the Y- Wing.

Escort is going to be a powerful ability, but only if you can keep the escorting squadron close enough to their charge so that they can cover it from all attackers.  You'll need at least two escorts (though more likely three) to keep a single squadron safe.

Also of note, as we have talked it through with our group because it was causing endless confusion.

The Y-Wing in the above example still counts as engaged with the TIEs and has to follow all of those rules (can't move - must shoot the TIES).

It is important as during our Wave 1 proxy sessions, we had someone who was running 4 lots of X/B as a pair and thought he could use the X to screen the B so that it could shoot at capital ships. No. The X screens the B so that the B wing can hopefully survive long enough to get capital ship damage in, but if the B-Wing has TIE's at distance 1, it must shoot at them (but it can't be shot back if that TIE is also engaged with the X)

This also makes Vader, Howl and Fell an interesting and powerful (though expensive) 3 ship group. You must shoot Vader - who has brace, and then cop the auto-damage from Fel. Fell then shoots with 5 dice and swarm re-roll.

Yeah, core set alone isn't that useful a measure of Escort. But with expansions, you can make two or three teams with one X-Wing apiece just to be there to act as a meat shield for your B-wings and Y-wings. Rebel tactics depend heavily on bomber squadrons, so ensuring the better ones survive for longer is key. A-wings on the other hand are pretty much designed to be fast intercepting cannon fodder to keep enemy squadrons tied up for a round or two. A bit like Tie Fighters, except they are much better than Ties when acting alone. Basic Ties are heavily reliant on swarm.

In the example above, without the Y wing, so 3 x wings vs 3 TIEs. Tie A shoots X wing A and scores 3 damage. Tie B shoots X wing A and gets 2 damage, So X wing A dies. The question is can X wing B intercept the damage from TIE B because of the ESCORT ability. We have two side to the situation. One says that since attackers must attack ships with ESCORT before they can attack ships without ESCORT, the defender gets to use ESCORT to change the target while the other says that as long as all defenders have ESCORT, all can be attacked and the attacker decides who he attacks.

Opinions please?

Attacker chooses target from unobstructed engaged escorts. They may focus fire X-wing 1, or spread the damage around, hoping to get lucky with ship-based anti-squadron fire.

Also note, escort does not protect bombers from ship-based anti-squadron fire

Man, this was a resurrection, but anyway...

"I am shooting a Squadron".

"You are Engaged with at least one Escort Squadron.  You must choose one Squadron with Escort as your Target.:"

as long as they do that, they're free to pick.

If there's 16 Squads with Escort, and 1 Without, then the 1 Without cannot be the target, but any one of those 16 escorts could be...  The defending player doesn't get to jump in...

Its one of the main points of dislike with Luke Skywalker...  Luke and Wedge both have Escort...  But so do regular X-Wings...  So their buddies in X-Wings cannot protect them, as any of them are valid targets, as they all have Escort.
